    Upcycling

Turn An Old Refrigerator Into An Igloo Cooler/ Ice Chest Project
    (Please read the Article)

    http://thehomesteadsurvival.com/turn.../#.UajpL1fm9A4

Reddit website shares a discussion on how to turn a non working old refrigerator into non electrical igloo cooler for your backyard.

Yes, you could just buy something like this but many people find a special kind of pride in upcycling an object that would have been headed straight to a landfill and giving it a second chance as a useful object.

In the discussion, people are bantering back and forth on tips to improve the project or how to create it. Click here to read the discussion:
    http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comment..._an_ice_chest/

    from the comments

We've done something similar to this, but instead of putting the dry ice in with the food and drinks, we put it into a small chest of it's own and freeze/re-freeze soda bottles filled with water to act as chiller blocks in the main fridge. No soggy contents, and a continual source of chilling for approx a week of camping!

Hallway Makeover – I love the floor idea

I love this floor treatment by Lovely crafty home. Who would have ever thought your floors could look so beautiful covered in paper bags.
It looks almost like a leather floor. What a nice inexpensive floor covering.

****If you are new to my paper floors, please read this first.***
    http://lovelycraftyhome.com/2011/11/...looring-guide/
My brown paper floors are by far my most viewed content, at the top of the list for FAQs, and seen more on Pinterest than anything else I’ve done. I think that’s kinda cool for such an easy and cheap floor solution! But I cannot take credit for this method alone, I originally saw this idea in a magazine that featured Jami from An Oregon Cottage. http://www.anoregoncottage.com/ I changed a few things about the process to suit my tastes, but her site is also a great resource

Before you rip up your flooring, get a piece of scrap plywood (or something similar to your subfloor), and practice the technique from start to finish, including several coats of poly.

If you use white paper you can dye whatever color you want - I plan to do this to my kitchen but with grey tones (more "stone" looking...)

How To Make Aluminum Can Shingles Project
    http://thehomesteadsurvival.com/alum.../#.UX_rvlfm9A4

Instructables website shares how to make aluminum can shingles for projects around the homestead. As the economy becomes tougher more people are having to learn out to upcycle ( recycle ) commonly found items into building materials.

    Click here to read: http://www.instructables.com/id/Make...inum-Cans-Bee/

I haven't tested this long term but it seems to work on my chicken coop. Here's the rundown:

Using scissors or tin snips cut the ends off an aluminum soda/beer can and cut down the middle of the can to make a flat rectangular piece of aluminum. Then you lay the flat piece into the forming die and press it by stomping on it or hitting it with a hammer. In this Instructable I'll show how to make the die and then lay out the shingles on a roof.

Making these can be tedious but the end result is gratifying because the old cans are fulfilling an immediate second life. A 24"x24" roof area will use from 36 to 50 cans (excluding drip edge and caps) depending on the vertical spacing and shingle style; that comes to 900-1250 cans per roof square (10'x10'.)

-- On a smaller scale - I can see using this method to make bird houses and such - Jolie

Upcycle A Plain Shirt: No Sew, Lattice & Stud T-shirt

Wobisobi website shares how to turn a plain t shirt into a piece of more fashionable clothing at a fraction of the price.

A lot of homesteaders have teenagers or want to be fashionable themselves – here is an option that could save you thirty or forty bucks.

I have to laugh at the jokes I have heard from people who think all homesteaders when a flannel button shirt or a plain white t shirt 365 days of the year.

Click here to read how to create this easy project:

How to Disassemble a Wood Pallet With Ease

This is a great article that shows you how to disassemble a wooden pallet in less than two minutes into 10 or more pieces of great usable wood. The only catch is you will need a sawzall which are good to have anyways so its a worthwhile investment.

    NO SEW T-SHIRT BOW SLEEVE
    Posted by: Kris

Need to add life to some of those old shirts in the drawer...here is another great upcycle idea!

    1. Cut a 2.5 inch slit from the top of the shoulder down toward the armpit on both the front and the back of the sleeve, making sure that you are cutting on the outside of the seam. (This means your total slit length will be 5 inches.) Once you've done that, there's a possibility that the shoulder seam might hang outside the shirt, like it is in the picture. To avoid this, I cut the unsightly seam off of the shirt in the area where it was visible. If yours doesn't hang out, there's no need to cut it off. Repeat this process on the other sleeve as well.

    2. Carefully cut off the very bottom of the shirt, below the seam stitching. Save this strip of fabric for step 3. You'll be using it to make the center of the bow.

    3. The strip of fabric from step 2 will be folded in half. Unfold it and cut out two 2.5 inch strips.

    4. Use your fingers to pinch the center of one of the sleeves.

    5. Wrap one of the strips from step 3 around the sleeve where you pinched it. Put a dab of glue on the end of the strip, where the star is in the picture.

    6. Fold the other end of the strip over the glue so that the strip becomes a circular band around the sleeve. Pinch it tightly between your fingers to make sure that the glue is secure. Repeat steps 3 through 6 on the other sleeve. Let the glue dry before trying on your new creation!
