The ancient Native American technique of growing Corn, Beans, and Squash together in an arrangement called the Three Sisters is the ultimate in companion planting and helps increase harvests, naturally.

Corn acts as a support for climbing bean vines, the beans fix nitrogen in the soil for the high feeding requirements of corn and squash, and the squash provides mulch and root protection for the corn and beans. After cooperating beautifully in the garden, corn and beans form a complete protein when eaten together! How's that for a mutually beneficial relationship?

The Three Sisters are all easy to direct sow in the garden and are a great project for children, teaching them about the beauty of natural harmony while providing a fast-growing reward for their efforts.

The Iroquois believe corn, beans and squash are precious gifts from the Great Spirit, each watched over by one of three sisters spirits, called the De-o-ha-ko, or “Our Sustainers". The planting season is marked by ceremonies to honor them, and a festival commemorates the first harvest of “green” corn on the cob. By retelling the stories and performing annual rituals, Native Americans passed down the knowledge of growing, using and preserving the Three Sisters through generations.

Mix 1/2 gallon of Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/4 c sea salt and 1/2 tsp Dawn liquid dish soap and pour into a spray bottle.
    Then just spray weeds thoroughly.

Fly Trap – How To Build A Vintage Design

Apartment Therapy shares screen box wooden frame fly trap that is simple to make and is not expensive.

Flies can be annoying to people, pets and farm animals.

Besides making this amazing fly trap, t
here are other things you can do to reduce flies around your home.

Flies breed in rotting material, securing your garbage cans
with tight fitting lids can stop them from getting inside.

Pouring boiling water in an empty dirty garbage can once a week
will kill any fly eggs that are growing inside.

Crushed mint placed in bowls and placed strategically around the home and
near front and back doors that people come and go out will discourage flies.

Better yet grow mint as an indoor plant, it repels flies and spiders.

Hang a CD up with string, to allow it to spin around in the wind.

5 drops of Lavender Essential Oil on a book mark sized piece of paper
hung around the house has been reported to drive flies away.

Any good tips for small moths? We seem to have some flying around the house (we have a lot of wool rugs) and I would like something natural. The man in the house wants to bug-bomb the place :P

Repel All Pests Naturally And Make A DIY Fruit Fly Gnat Trap

Nice list of pest control remedies from Inspire wild, including a how to for making your own fruit fly or gnat trap. http://inspirewild.com/2012/09/28/re...diy-gnat-trap/

So I walked into my kitchen this morning and was hit in the face by a gnat swarm from tomatoes left on the counter from the garden. I looked like a ninja having a seizure as they flew up my nose…

Pffftt!!! Not the kind of protein you want before your morning coffee. I got inspired by that bug in my head…

I dove into my herbal remedy foraging guides (One of like 30 that I own) and I am hereby submitting for your approval a comprehensive guide on many herbal remedies for what bugs you, and provide you with my diagram for a pesky gnat trap that you can build yourself.

    Ants

If you are having a problem with ants a quick fix is cinnamon and garlic cloves, vinegar, black pepper, and a variety of plants.

Place cinnamon sticks or garlic in areas where you have seen ants enter, such as in window tracks, by doors and in corners around your home. While garlic cloves aren’t as aromatically pleasing as cinnamon sticks, they work really well. Just peel and slice a few cloves and place them where you notice the ants. You can also place cinnamon sticks around the pantry for extra protection.

Place white vinegar or apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle and spray on areas where you have seen ants. The fungicide and insecticidal properties in the vinegar help prevent ants.

Sprinkle black pepper where you see ants. The ants will immediately scatter. Pay attention to where they run; chances are they will be exiting your house and you’ll be able to treat the entry area with pepper too.

For serious anthill problems in your yard or walkway, pour boiling water over the anthills. It sounds a bit cruel, but pesticides can be equally, if not more, cruel.

Mint destroys the smelling capabilities of ants and prevents them from entering your home. There are several ways to use mint to prevent ant infestations. First, plant mint around your home, especially near doors and close to areas where you have seen anthills. Second, place mint leaves in and around windows. If ants are entering your pantry, place some mint leaves on the shelves and in the corners.

    Mosquitoes

Make your own natural mosquito repellent. These natural products will effectively repel mosquitoes, but they require more frequent reapplication (at least every 1-2 hours) Most natural repellents tend to be volatile plant oils.

The insecticide Pyrethrum is a spray to control mosquitoes in swamps, to keep down West Nile in certain areas. When processed its extremely toxic in large doses. Pyrethrum comes from the flowers of the Daisy Chrysanthemum. Several of the books that I have read tell you to plant them around your property.

A simple bug spray recipe is to go to the health food store or Amazon and order these essential oils. A 1/4 cup vegetable oil, mixed with these essential oils store in a spray bottle:
    8 drops cedar
 oil
    5 drops eucalyptus
 oil
    4 drops lavender
oil
    4 drops peppermint
 oil
    3 drops cinnamon oil

Using a generous amount vanilla extract as an insect repellent usually works for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. If you don’t care about impressing your friends and your not sensitive, rub onion or peppers over your skin and be careful not to rub your eyes.

    Fleas

Plant eucalyptus plants in the yard (particularly around the perimeter of the yard). Fleas hate the scent of eucalyptus, and will be quickly driven away from any area that smells of eucalyptus.

Plant eucalyptus seeds in pots inside the home. Silver dollar eucalyptus plants are the ideal size to be grown indoors. Once the plants have begun to grow, place pots with eucalyptus plants near the front and back doors. Placing the plants near entrance doors will get rid of fleas that try to enter your home on pets or clothing.

    Weevils, Roaches And Earwigs

You can grow bay leaves outside in the summer but you will need to bring it indoors during the winter months. You can buy dried bay leaf at the store if you find you are unable to grow it; the dried variety that you put in stews and soups works as well as the fresh for keeping pests away. You can put one bay leaf in fifty pounds of wheat berries or organic white flour and it will keep the weevils out of it. If you don’t happen to buy flour in those quantities you can add a bay leaf to a smaller sized container with similar results. Other items that it will protect are: Barley, Cornmeal, Oatmeal, Quinoa, and Rice

Most cereal products will be just fine for months with the bay leaves to protect them. Scatter a few leaves on the pantry shelves to repel moths, roaches, earwigs, and mice. Flies seem to hate the smell of bay leaves, too.

    Mice

Mint, catnip, and pennyroyal planted around the foundation of your house can keep both ants and mice out of your home. Neither of these pests seem to like the smell and all but the most determined will head to a better smelling yard. You can also place shallow bowls of the dried mint leaves in your pantry to discourage mice.

    Pennyroyal
is also repugnant to fleas, ants, flies, and mosquitoes. Just be careful of it because large amounts of pennyroyal can be toxic to pets and children. You can place dried pennyroyal on your pantry shelves and it will keep ants away.

Just a quick warning about mice, they love anise. Keep anise in jars or it will draw mice to your pantry no matter how much mint you have out! You can use anise to bait live traps with excellent results.

    Sweet Woodruff Flowers
    Beetles and Moths

    Sweet Woodruff
has long been used to deter carpet beetles and moths. Just lay it beneath wool carpets (or other types). It may also deter ants. An added benefit is that it releases a sweet scent when you walk across your rugs.

    Tansy
is another little known herb that repels flies, moths, and mice. Its flowers resemble marigolds or yellow Bachelor’s Buttons and it makes a great foundation planting.

    The Venus Fly Trap

Venus Fly Trap is a carnivorous perennial that grows in wetlands from Florida to Pennsylvania that eats insects and small animals. Its leaf rosettes bear broad leaves that resemble clam shells. When an insect lands on the leaves and brushes against sensitive hairs, the leaves quickly close and trap the prey. The plant secretes digestive juices and digests the insect within five days. They are sensitive to grow requiring a terrarium but if I had a fly problem in my home I’d set one up.

    DIY Your Own Gnat Trap

Here is an easy way I found to get rid of those pesky critters that seem to show up overnight. At the first sight of a gnat problem you should start taking care of it. An insect infestation doesn’t take long to explode.

    What you’ll need

•2 liter plastic bottle (like a discarded soda bottle)
    •Utility knife
    •Duct Tape
    •Apple Cider Vinegar
    •Sugar
    •1 teaspoon dish soap

    Prepare the Bottle
Start by cleaning out the bottle. You can do this by simply adding a small amount of dish soap and running hot water in to the bottle until all the suds disappear.
Use the utility knife to carefully cut the top off the bottle. You should cut down no more than two inches from the bottle opening. Don’t discard the top of the bottle place it to the side, as you will use it later.

    Prepare The Liquid
Pour ½ cup vinegar in to the large mixing bowl. Slowly add ½ cup sugar and mix until the sugar has dissolved. The sugar doesn’t have to be completely dissolved, but you want most of it to be. Pour this mix in to the bottle then add water, If you overfill the bottle, the gnats will be able to get out, making the trap useless. Put the drop of dish soap in the middle because it is heavy and will weight them down in the liquid.

    Assemble The Top
Take the piece you cut off earlier and place it in the bottle. This should fit upside down without falling in. You can use the duct tape to secure it and prevent it from falling inside the bottle. This will give the gnats plenty of room to get in the bottle, but make it difficult for them to get back out.

Your gnat trap is now ready to use. Place this on your kitchen counter, or any area where you’ve seen a lot of gnats congregating. You should find a decrease in the number of gnats within just a few hours.

If you see gnats in your sink, you can simply pour baking soda down the drain, and follow it up with vinegar. Gnats can breed in drains, and this mixture will kill them off. Wait a few hours before running water back down the drain to ensure all the gnats have been killed.

You can also pour a 50/50 bleach and water solution in the pipes just before bed or work - when it will sit undisturbed for several hours.
