How to Build a Soda Bottle Bird Feeder

This one is almost Squirrel Proof

Here is what you will need to build a soda bottle bird feeder:
    Materials:

    1 - 2-liter soda bottle
2 - 5/16" x 8" dowels (you can use atree branch if you like)
1 - 3' piece of thin solid wire or String

    Tools: Scissors or Drill

    Procedure:

Remove the label from the soda bottle, then clean, rinse and dry.
Drill a 1/16" hole (or a size just bigenough for your wire to feed through) in the cap and the bottom of the bottle.
With the cap off, feed the wirethrough the bottom then through the cap (from inside to outside).Replace the cap onto the bottle. Wrap and secure the wire around the neck of the bottle. Make a loop at the end of with least 4" of wire, in order to hang the bottle.

Drill two 5/16" holes near the bottomof the soda bottle bird feeder (cap end) on opposite sides and drill two more holes 1/2" higher. Position the holes so that the perches cross in the center. Insert the perches.
Drill or cut holes for the seed.
For nyjer seed: cut small slots, 1/4" x 1/8", 1 1/2"above each perch.
For sunflower seed: drill 5/16" holes, 1 1/2" to 2" above each perch.

    SMORES CUPS:

    • 7 whole graham crackers, finely crushed
    • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
    • 6 tbsp butter, melted
    • 4 bars milk chocolate candy
    • 12 large marshmallows

You are going to be shocked how easy these are.

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350░F (180░C). Place graham crackers into a large resealable plastic bag. Finely crush into crumbs using Baker’s Roller«;. Combine graham cracker crumbs, powdered sugar and butter in Small Batter Bowl

    Step 2:
Using Small Scoop, place scant scoop of crumb mixture in each cup of a Mini-Muffin Pan. Press crumbs to form shallow cups with Mini-Tart Shaper. Bake 4-5 minutes or until edges are bubbling

    Step 3:
While the crust is in the oven, break two of the candy bars into rectangles. Remove pan from oven; place one rectangle into each cup.

    Step 4:
Cut marshmallows in half crosswise using shears dipped in cold water. Place one marshmallow half, cut-side down, into each cup. Return to oven 1-2 minutes or until marshmallows are just slightly softened. Remove from oven to a cooling rack; cool 15 minutes. Carefully remove cups from pan. Cool completely.

    Step 5:
Break remaining candy bars and place in (1-cup/250 mL) Prep Bowl. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute-1 1/2 minutes or until melted and smooth, stirring every 20 seconds. Dip the top of each marshmallow in melted chocolate. Turn top-side up and let stand 40 minutes-1 hour or until set.

    Yield: 24 cups

Store the cups in a single layer in an airtight container for up to 1 week. Freezing is not recommended.

For a richer chocolate flavor, substitute dark chocolate candy bars for the milk chocolate.

    THE "NAKED" EGG

This is really cool! It will amaze your kids and teach them some science all at once.

Christina Haswell says: I did this for a science project when I was a kid about 20 yrs. ago n passed it on to my son when he did his science project last year. It's really cool! It takes about 4 to 7 days.

Put an egg in a cup and fill it with apple cider vinegar till egg is covered. Cover tightly n let it sit. Each day give it a swirl. At the end u rinse off the egg n VIOLA! A rubber egg! Just be careful...it will bounce but is still delicate. And very smelly when it breaks. LOL ...Not rotten -- just smells like vinegar. Always keep it in the fridge during the whole process too.

Stefany Smith added: If you place the "naked egg" in corn syrup, it will shrink/shrivel up. The vinegar inside the egg moves through the semi-permeable membrane.

You can then place it in water with food coloring and "color" the inside of the egg and it will fill up again due to osmosis

    “Mendhi” Hand Medallions

In India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, “mendhi” is a temporary art form that decorates the hands or feet for special occasions. Henna (a plant extract) is drawn onto the skin of hands or feet in floral or geometric patterns, allowed to dry, and rinsed away to leave beautiful designs which gradually wash off over a period of 2-3 days. Traditionally, this artwork was for girls and women, but more recently boys and men are partaking in this form of celebration.

    Students will:
    Explore the art of India.
Make decorative texture stamps with simple organic, natural or geometric shapes.
Learn to sculpt a simple hand form with spheres and ropes of clay.
Stamp symmetric or curvilinear patterns onto prepared clay hands.
Decorate hand sculptures with texture designs.
Stain cured clay to accentuate patterns and textures with traditional earth or metallic colors.

    Getting Started

Start with clean hands and work surface area. Good work surfaces include wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 ░F for 15 minutes per 1/4 in thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use.

Begin by preheating oven to 275 ░F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Step 1 : Sample photos of mendhi are recommended to inspire ideas for designs. Students can experiment on paper first, drawing possible ideas.

Step 2 : Students will condition scrap clay for texture stamps first, rolling and stacking slabs of Sculpey clay until a block roughly 1”x1”x2” is achieved .

Step 3 : Students (or teacher) will cut the block into quarters to make 4 stamps, each ╝”x1/4x2”.

Step 4 : Pinch and incise simple geometric shapes, leaves or flowers into the ╝" face of these stamps. Initial work or work surface unless stamps will be shared collaboratively

Step 5 : Bake as directed above.

Step 6 : Students will condition and roll a 1” diameter sphere or ball of their chosen clay color, as well as a rope roughly ╝”x 6”.

Step 7 : Flatten the sphere onto a scrap of mat board, a ceramic tile, or an aluminum flashing tile with roller. Trim away a thin crescent to form the palm of a hand.

Step 8 : Cut 4 fingers and a thumb, students using their own hands to guide the length of the fingers and placement of the thumb.

Step 9 : Spray ArmorAll™ onto a folded paper towel and use to lubricate stamps before each impression is made.

Step 10 : Testing the pressure first on scraps of clay, draw vining stems or geometric designs, and press designs into the clay, treating the fingers as a group when stamping.

Step 11 : Fingernails can be pressed in with a Sculpey modeling tool (mendhi can be on the palm or the back of the hand).

Step 12 : Bake as directed above.

Step 13 : Students will smudge acrylic paint onto hand to accentuate textures and wipe away raised areas only. Make sure students wash hands and work areas immediately to avoid staining skin or work surfaces. Initial back of pieces for identification.

Mini Matchstick Gun - The Clothespin Pocket Pistol

In this project we're taking boring old clothespins, and up-cycling them into powerful matchstick & toothpick shooters, that will stick into apples, and lob firey darts over 20 feet.

    Jar Lantern

The Jar Lantern is a contemporary take on the traditional gas lantern. It was inspired by seeing sunlight refract through my glass water bottle one afternoon, and thinking to myself that it was a bit like carrying a jar full of light. This brief moment of illumination sparked something in my mind that made me wonder how I could capture this experience more permanently.

While trying to bottle light may be a fool's task, I could at least try to recreate the sense of magic I had briefly experienced. After mulling over various methods of accomplishing this, I decided to make a jar with an illuminated floating light bulb. The beauty of this seemingly impossible object is that the light bulb has no clear power source, yet it seems so natural and familiar. The Jar Lantern tends to leave people both taken and dumbfounded by its simplicity.
