Bath Fizzies

1 cup baking soda
1 cup citric acid
1 Tb almond oil
20 drops essentail oil ( lavendar, jasmine, orange or lemon )
2 drops food coloring

In a large mixing bowl, sift together baking soda & citric acid. Add other ingredients and mix well. Spoon mixture into molds and bake 425* for 4 - 6 minutes. Cool. Carefully tip out of mold. Wrap tightly in celephane and tie with ribbon.

Chunky Bath Fizzies

12 ounces Baking Soda
6 ounces Citric Acid
2 ounces Cornstarch
20 drops of Fragrance Oil or Essential Oil
1.5 ounces Distilled Water in a spray bottle

Mix dry ingredients together thoroughly. Spritz lightly with water and continue to mix, it is vital to the success of this recipe that the water portion be added at a very slow pace otherwise it will start to fizz. I have had the best results spritzing once or twice and then mixing before spritzing again. You can rotate between water and color mixture spritzing until you reach the desired range of color. Generally it takes me approximately 1.5 ounces of fluid to obtain the consistency needed. You want to add just enough water so that the mixture is moist enough to hold itself together. It will appear crumbly in the bowl but, if you pick up a handful and squeeze it together, it should hold it's form. Next you'll want to press the mixture into a jelly roll style pan. Let it harden for about 6-12 hours and then break it into desired size chunks and package into bags.

This recipe is also great for molding into small shapes.

Fizzy Bath Crystals

8 oz wt cornstarch
8 oz wt Citric Acid
16 oz wt baking soda
up to 1 tsp. Fragrance oil

Mix cornstarch and Citric Acid together thoroughly. Add fragrance oil as desired. Blend in baking soda. Package in bags only and label.

Notes & Comments: Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup per bath.

Spa-erific Salt Scrub

This scrub is more like the ones I've bought at various bath shops. This is a very versatile scrub so be creative add a little color for a pastel hue. And oh, the fragrance possibilites are endless.

24 ounces Fine Grain Sea Salt
1 ounce Colorless Jojoba Oil
3 ounces Sunflower Oil
4 ounces MMS Liquid Soap Base
2-3 ml desired Fragrance Oil

Mix all the above ingredients together. Add your fragrance. Once your scrub has been transferred into the desired containers and allowed to sit for awhile the salt will settle. There will be about a 1/4 of an inch or so of liquid/oil on the top. Don't panic this is very typical of this type of scrub.

Notes & Comments: I like to pick up a pair of exfoliating hand mittens and a jar of this scrub, combined with a nice long shower, I feel like I spent the day being pampered at the Day Spa. Well...., almost!

Winter Survival Sugar Scrub

Winter Survival was one of the recipes I created for our most recent addition to the class schedule. Muds & Scrubs was a blast, what more can I say! Thanks to all the great ladies that definitely helped make this a success.

180 gram white sugar
40 grams brown sugar
90 grams Sunflower Oil
5 grams Liquid Glycerin (not Melt & Pour Soap Base)
10 grams Colorless Jojoba Oil
30 drops Satsuma Fragrance Oil
20 drops Honey Almond Fragrance Oil

Equipment:
Scale - Mixing Bowl - Transfer pipettes - Jars to place the finished product in.


Carefully weigh all dry ingredients into a bowl and remove all lumps.
Any additional additives can be incorporated in at this time. For example Ground Apricot Seed, Ground Luffa.

Carefully weigh all oils and other liquids once all lumps have been removed and mixture is smooth.

Slowly add and blend your oils and glycerin into the dry mixture.
Using a transfer pipette measure fragrances and continue blend, making sure all fragrance is evenly distributed through out the mixture.

I recommend using your scrubs only once per week. Remember too much of a good thing can still become irritating. This recipe makes about 8 fl oz of scrub.

Milk Bath

1 cup Fine Sea Salt
2 cups powdered milk
4 to 8 mL desired fragrance

Measure out fine Sea Salt, add fragrance. Mix well. Add milk powder and blend, making sure all ingredients are well combined.

Transfer material into desired packaging. I used the MMS Bath Salt Tubes. This recipe will fill approximately 6 tubes.

I just wanted to tell you thanks for these! Molded Recipes: They stuck to the molds when I tried that, so i'm not sure about putting them in molds. Other than that all the women in my family love bath fizzies and they're fun to make. Thanks so much!

What you'll need for the sugar scrub:
- mixing bowl and spoon
- 3 cups white sugar
- 1 cup + 2 Tbsp. good quality oil (I used olive oil, but you can use any nice, non-smelly oil)
- 10 drops of yummy-scented essential oil per jar (I went with mandarin, peppermint, and lavender)


Combine your sugar and oil, mix it up well, and divide into separate bowls (if you're planning to flavor them separately). Add your essential oil, stir, and divide among your jars.
Done! Easy peasy!

How to make the glycerine soap gem stones

Firstly, get hold of some pretty colored glycerine soaps. I bought some from muji and ebay. I would’ve liked an even more colorful selection. Orange ones are the most common.

Cut each one into a few chunks. You can use a fruit knife or any other small kitchen knives, a thin blade works best. The glycerine soaps from ebay were very soft and cut like cheese. This type will be good for kids to try cutting even with a butter knife. The ones from muji were harder to cut, but not especially difficult. You can also use sharp cutters (grown ups) to have clean and polished looking cut surfaces.

DIY rosemary seasalt favors




If you liked our simple winter table yesterday, you’ll love this little simple favor DIY. We’re really into wedding or party favors that aren’t simply decorative, but that are of use – and salt, well, just anybody can use salt. Especially when it’s delicious home made rosemary sea salt.

To infuse the salt, fill a pot with as much good sea salt as you need (or do this in batches if you are making many favors) and add some sprigs of fresh, clean, dry rosemary. The more you add, the stronger the flavor will be. Mix well, then put on your stove and heat up the mixture on low, stirring every now and again. After 7-10 minutes remove from the stove and pour the salt into a bowl. Let cool down, then cover with a lid and let stand for at least 12 hours, better make it 24. Then remove the rosemary from the mixture and fill the salt into little bottles or jars. Add a fresh sprig of rosemary if you like – the favors just look cuter that way, don’t you think?

DIY Lavendar Soap

Here’s what you need for the project:

Soap base (available at Michaels). We used the goat milk base for ours.
Soap molds (also from Michaels).
Herbs, oats, tea, essential oil, anything you want to use to flavor your soap.

The creative part was rummaging through Kristina’s garden and kitchen cupboards looking for fun combinations for our soaps. We decided to make three flavors:

Lavendar Oatmeal (fresh lavender flowers, lavender essential oil, oats)
Chai Tea (steeped tea for color and scent, plus dry loose tea for a little texture)
Chamomile Calendula (dried chamomile and calendula flowers)

Here’s what you do:

1. Melt soap base (stirring often over medium heat)
2. Add “seasonings”
3. Mix well and long enough for flavors to distribute evenly
4. Pour liquid soap into molds
5. Uncork champagne and enjoy the afternoon waiting for your soaps to set!

Once your soaps have set (overnight, or we found you can refrigerate them for a few hours), you have to package them in maximum cuteness. We wrapped ours in unbleached parchment paper (in the same way you’d wrap a gift), then added a band of vintage wallpaper for decoration. We made tags using a grocery bag and a 1 1/2 inch tag punch, and tied them on with baker’s twine.

How To: Make A Bath Bomb

Having a soak in a warm bath is a great way to relax and unwind, but what would make it even better is if you added a DIY handmade bath bomb and turned it into a luxurious spa treatment creating a relaxing and harmonious environment to make you feel truly pampered.

Now a days luxuries like bath bombs can be expensive, so the next best thing is to make your own. Making bath bombs is fun and easy, you can make the basics or get creative by adding yummy fragrances, therapeutic essential oils and gorgeous skin softening agents such as dead sea salts, butters, oils, petals and multiple colours.

There are some ingredients that can be sourced right from your kitchen but if you are adding more specialist ingredients try your health food store or purchase from a supplier of ingredients for bath and body products. Check out this great recipe and step by step tutorial on how to make your own DIY bath bombs. You will impress yourself your friends and your family and they make great gifts that are loved by children and adults alike.

Step 1: Equipment You Will Need

Kitchen scales
A large mixing bowl
A hand sprayer containing clean cold water
Some latex or vinyl gloves for sanitary and protective purposes, you should always wear gloves when making bath bombs as the citric acid will sting if it gets into cuts or scratches.
Eye protection is advised as fine powders can be very irritating to the eyes.
A Dust mask is advised as the fine powders can be irritating if breathed in.
A Sieve to remove any lumps from the mixture if required.
Suitable molds to shape the bath bombs - If you can’t get your hands on a spherical mould there are many other options like ice cube trays, muffin trays, disposable shot glasses, chocolate molds etc. Just hunt around your kitchen and I am sure will find something suitable.

Step 2: Ingredients

300g Bicarbonate of Soda
150g Citric Acid
5 – 10 ml Fragrance or Essential Oil of your choice
5 ml Carrier Oil of your choice, such as Sweet Almond Oil, Grape seed Oil, Sunflower Oil, Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil.
Colour- Most food colouring can be used or any water based or powdered colour from a supplier of ingredients for bath and body products.

If you are a beginner its worth remembering that smaller bath bombs are easier to make than big ones as the big ones tend to crumble more easily, whereas the smaller ones are more robust.

Start off with a small batches first until your confident, also remember that the weather conditions can effect bath bombs, if its humid or raining when you are making them then you need to use less water in your mix or it will start fizzing and you will end up with a bubbling heap, Its trial and error but you will get the hang of it.

Step 3: Measure Ingredients

Measure out the bicarbonate of soda and the citric acid into the mixing bowl, sieving if necessary and thoroughly mix together.

Step 4: Add Fragrance

Add the carrier oil and fragrance or essential oil into mixture. Most essential or fragrance oils will not cause the mixture to fizz, but some citrus oils can, so if this happens, mix in quickly.

Do not mix fragrance and essential oils together its one or the other.




Step 5: Separate Mixture

If you are making a multi-coloured bath bomb now is the time to separate your mixtures into separate bowl before you add the colour. I am making a triple coloured bath bomb here so I have split it into 3 lots.

Now add the colour, if you are using liquid food or cosmetic/soap colours, add in drops until you have achieved your desired shade. Mix rapidly with your hands before the mixture has a chance to fizz.

If using a powdered colour, simply add a little bit at a time and mix until you have your desired shade

Keep mixing until you have a consistent shade throughout the mixture to avoid 'spots' especially when using powdered colours. I find the best way to mix is using the apple crumble technique, where you continually rub the mixture in-between your fingers.

As the mixture gets wetter do not leave to stand or it will slowly start to set, you need to work quickly after this point.




Step 7: Add Water


Spray a mist of water onto the mixture a tiny bit at a time, then mix and work the mixture continuously to avoid it fizzing! Be careful not to add to much water, aim for a consistency where the mixture is still a bit crumbly but starts to just hold together when slightly squeezed in your hand.

The only way I can describe the texture is a bit like making a sand castle with slightly damp sand.

Fill and compress the mixture into your moulds. If you're using a two-part spherical mould, then slightly overfill each half of the mould, and then press them together tightly. Don't twist, just press. Wait a few minutes then lightly tap the mould to release one half of the bath bomb mould and leave to set in the other half of the mould for around 20 minutes.

Remove the bath bomb(s) from the mould and leave them to dry for a couple of hours in a warm, dry place. I like to place my bath bombs on some folded bubble wrap or a nest of wood wool. It seems to help them dry better, and stops the spherical ones from getting flat on the bottom.

And there you have it, your own super duper handmade bath bombs! Just drop one into a hot steaming bath and enjoy!

Remember the fresher the bath bomb the more it will fizz, If you are not packaging your bath bombs then store them somewhere dry.

I package mine in shrink wrap which keeps them fresher for longer. I have added some photos of how I have packaged my other bath bombs to give you some ideas.
