Matthew McConaughey Stays True to His Word During His Acceptance Speech

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPw9o1W3fsE&feature=player_embedded

Caroline Schaeffer | On 03, Mar 2014

At the 2014 Academy Awards, Matthew McConaughey won a Best Actor trophy for his performance as an AIDS patient in “Dallas Buyer’s Club.” His acceptance speech, which drew mixed reactions from the audience, was a touching tribute. He thanked God first and foremost.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deNAilnDY4I&feature=player_embedded

He has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand. He has shown me that it’s a scientific fact that gratitude reciprocates. In the words of the late Charlie Lawton, who said, ‘When you got God, you got a friend, and that friend is you.’

It’s been noted that God is rarely thanked in Oscar acceptance speeches. The Daily Caller found that, in the past decade, Meryl Streep has been thanked more often. Most thanked is the Academy, followed by spouses, families, and agents.

This carefully prepared speech was a lovely change of pace. And although the audience may not have appreciated McConaughey’s tribute – in fact, Woody Allen got more applause – you can certainly bet that people watching at home across the country appreciated his gesture.

Jared Leto took the night's first award and made it a doozy

Jared Leto took the night’s first award and made it a doozy. Here’s what he had to say, touching on everything from his dear old mom to current events:

“Incredible. Ellen, I love you. To my fellow nominees, I’m so proud to share this journey with you. I’m in awe and have so much respect for you all. To the Academy, thank you.

In 1971, in Bossier City Louisiana, there was a teenage girl who was pregnant with her second child. She was a high school dropout and a single mom, but somehow she managed to make a better life for herself and her children. She encouraged here kids to be creative and work hard and do something special. That girl was my mother and she’s here tonight. I just want to say ‘I love you mom, thank you for teaching me to dream.’

To my brother Shannon, the best big brother in the world: Thank you so much for sharing this insane adventure that is 30 Seconds to Mars and for being my best friend.

To all the dreamers out there around the world watching this tonight in places like Ukraine and Venezuela, I want to to say we are here, and as you struggle to make your dreams happen and live the impossible, we are thinking of you tonight.

[Then he did the typical Oscar thank you....before moving one to a more heartfelt subject:]

This is for the 36 million people who have lost the battle to AIDS. And to those of you who have ever felt injustice because of who you are and who you love, I stand here in front of the world with you and for you.

Thank you so much, and good night.”

Lupita Nyong’o's Emotional Acceptance Speech
The actress won for 12 Years a Slave

By Lily Rothman March 02, 2014

A year ago, most of the world hadn’t heard of Lupita Nyong’o — but in her acceptance speech for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar she just took home for her work in 12 Years a Slave, she reminded viewers that there’s a long history behind how she got to that stage. “It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is due to so much pain in someone else’s,” she said in reference to Patsey, the slave she portrayed in the acclaimed film, which was based on a real-life memoir.

In addition to thanking the usual Academy Awards suspects — castmates, her drama school, the Academy — she drew attention to the real people whose stories she helped bring to the big screen: Speaking to director Steve McQueen, she noted that the dead are watching, and that she believes “they are grateful” that he brought their history back to life.

But her speech didn’t just stick to the past. In a tear-jerking conclusion, she expressed her wish that her unknown-to-Oscars trajectory would inspire someone watching at home to go for it — because, as she explained: “No matter where you’re from, your dreams are valid.”

Oscars pizza delivery guy on 'Ellen': 'I was just shocked' to get on stage

DeGeneres gave Edgar Martirosyan the $600 tip she collected from the star-studded audience that chowed down on the three large pies — plus $400 out of her own pocket. Edgar Martirosyan made history on Sunday as the first pizza delivery man to make it to the Oscar stage — on the clock, at least — and he had no idea he was about to do it, either. "They told me I'm gonna just deliver for writers. And then when I was there, they just told me, 'Wait here.' And then you came out," Martirosyan told Ellen DeGeneres on her daytime talk show (above) on Monday. "You said, 'Just follow me.' And we're going, and I'm on a stage. I was just shocked."

That's right. Martirosyan, who co-owns the Big Mama's and Papa's pizza joint with his brother, was just a pawn in DeGeneres' joke that ran throughout the show. After announcing to the star-studded audience that she would be ordering pizza for everyone, DeGeneres followed through on her promise and escorted Martirosyan through the Dolby Theatre auditorium, where he was able to serve the woman of his dreams, Julia Roberts. "She was, like, my woman in dreams," Martirosyan said of the Oscar nominee. "I was always watching her movies back in Moscow, so it was something crazy to me."

Another crazy thing happened just moments later when DeGeneres ended her interview with Martirosyan by handing over the $600 in tips she collected from Hollywood's A-listers with Pharrell Williams' big, brown hat. Oh yeah, and she chipped in an extra $400 herself.

All in all, it seems like Martirosyan had a better night than some of the nominees. Especially Leonardo DiCaprio.

Fellow actor Guy Wilson praised McConaughey for being “fearless.”
It is a sad testament that freely expressing one’s faith is now an act of bravery, isn’t it?

Resurrecting Matthew McConaughey
— From RomCom Cornball To Oscar Winning Powerhouse
Posted by Harry Morall on 03/18/2014 at 10:30 AM News

Once dubbed ‘The McConaissance’ by entertainment pundits desperate for something to toss into their pop culture headlines – Matthew McConaughey’s ascension from requisite romantic comedy cornball to certified acting force reached its apex with his Best Actor Oscar win for Dallas Buyers Club, proves that it is indeed possible to recover from years of cinematic douchebaggery.

Mac has strung together many lauded performances of late, from bespectacled district attorney Danny Buck Davidson in the Linklater-directed – and criminally ignored—Bernie, to the tortured misanthrope Rust Cohle in HBO’s True Detective, that is certain to earn him Emmy nods.

Not since Robert Downey Jr. relinquished his role as resident Hollywood Scumbag and focused on films as opposed to fixes have we seen such a swift and drastic career turnaround, proving that past work is not necessarily indicative of future performance.

Even if time is a flat circle….

McConaughey’s spectacular career resurgence is an encouraging sign for the television and film industry as a whole, as it substantiates that players traditionally regarded as talent-deficient pretty-boys can turn-in top-flight performances when provided with the right material.

Actors can be afforded a mulligan or two for poor script-choice in light of massive paydays (I’m looking at you, Aaron Paul—I don’t care how many hours I spent watching Breaking Bad, I refuse to see Need for Speed), but when an occasion becomes a routine, it can potentially tarnish a serviceable actor’s reputation as a whole.

Somewhere between How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, McConaughey must have had some sort of revelation and thought to himself, “Alright, alright, alright, man – enough is enough.”

He shed nearly 50 pounds and was on the verge of losing his eyesight for his portrayal of Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club—a performance that served as a veritable warning-shot toward the movie-going public—that the man from Texas was serious about his craft, and would no longer languish in the roles of shirtless, southern-drawled bonehead.

There will always be a place for romantic comedies in the filmmaking lexicon– but I’m willing to wager that if you privately polled actors in the movie business, the majority of them would rather not be a part of it.

McConaughey has demonstrated dedication and integrity in the face of a pigeonholed career; where he could have just as easily collected his checks and gone about his business—and television and film enthusiasts are the beneficiaries of it.

He’s elevated his abilities, and shown what remarkable changes can be achieved if we simply “Just keep livin’.”
