Man pleads guilty in Family Research Council shooting
By Crimesider @crimesider

Floyd Lee Corkins, 28, pleaded guilty to wounding a security guard at the Washington headquarters of a conservative Christian lobbying group

CBS News @CBSNews

Floyd Corkins today pleaded guilty to charges of interstate transportation of a firearm, assault with intent to kill and committing an act of terrorism in connection with the shooting at the Family Research Council headquarters in Washington, D.C., last August. That shooting injured Leo Johnson, who wrestled Corkins to the ground, preventing what could have been a massacre. http://twitchy.com/2012/08/15/shooting-at-family-research-council/

CBS News reports that Corkins told FBI agents he wanted to “kill as many as possible” to “make a statement against the people who work in that building … and with their stance against gay rights and Chick-fil-A.” As Twitchy reported, Corkins was carrying 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in a bag when he was subdued; at a hearing he admitted he intended to smear the sandwiches in the faces of his victims. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57567996-504083/floyd-lee-corkins-pleads-guilty-in-family-research-council-shooting/

Lachlan Markay @lachlan

Whoa. The FRC shooter picked his target directly from a @SPLcenter "hate map." http://bit.ly/YDZfdZ via @robertbluey

7:42 PM - 06 Feb 13

John Sexton @verumserum

According to the Post, Corkins had addresses of "four socially conservative organizations" on him at time of shooting.

10:04 PM - 06 Feb 13

In a statement following the shooting, Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins alleged that the Southern Poverty Law Center had given Corkins a license to shoot by listing the FRC as a hate group on its website. The SPLC at the time called the claim “outrageous,” but Corkins acknowledged in a hearing that he had indeed visited the SPLC’s website, which identified the FRC to him as “an anti-gay organization.”

Derek Hunter @derekahunter

Congratulations to @splcenter, in their "fight against hate" they inspired a terrorist and got a guy shot. #HateGroup

Remember when domestic terrorism was Sarah Palin's fault for having a map? http://bit.ly/YDZfdZ

Erick Erickson ✔ @EWErickson

Sarah Palin's map did not inspire Jared Lochner, but Southern Poverty Law Center's map did inspire Floyd Corkins

Dana Loesch ✔ @DLoesch

Should we classify SPLC as a hate group now? http://pulse.me/s/ierSw

9:48 PM - 06 Feb 13

RB @RBPundit

No evidence of any conservative "extremism" causing a mass shooting, but there is the FRC shooting inspired by Left wing websites. #tcot

DepressiveBlogger69 @AceofSpadesHQ

Palin is responsible for Loughner, just because. But the SPLC is NOT responsible for the FRC shooter, just because.

SFK @stephenkruiser

I assume that the hard-hitting @MSNBC outrage journalists will be all over this FRC shooter/SPLC connection. Also, #unicornfarts.

Maybe it’s Time to Call The Southern Poverty Law Center a Hate Group
February, 6, 2013 — nicedeb

Because according to reports, it was the uncivil discourse found on its website that incited Floyd Lee Corkins to attempt a mass shooting at the Family Research Council, last August. http://www.breitbart.com/InstaBlog/2013/02/06/SPLC-Website-Provided-Shooter-with-His-Targets

He told the FBI that he wanted to kill anti-gay targets and went to the law center’s website for ideas. At a court hearing where his comments to the FBI were revealed, he said that he intended to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims’ faces, and kill the guard.”

In August 2012, Corkins targeted the Family Research Council offices in Washington DC. He shot the group’s security guard in the arm before the guard managed to disarm him. At the time, Corkins had the names and addresses of “four socially conservative organizations” on him.

As you remember, this is almost the same thing the left accused Sarah Palin of doing in January, 2011 because she posted a congressional district map with crosshairs on her Facebook page – supposedly giving mass shooter, Jared Loughner ideas.

But whereas any fool could see that hers was strictly a map showing districts she wanted Republicans to win – the SPLC has viciously defamed Christian groups for supporting biblical teaching in regards to homosexuality.

Via KeyWiki, in November of 2010, SPLC added several mainstream evangelical organizations to their list of “hate” groups.

From Citizenlink: http://www.citizenlink.com/2010/12/pro-family-groups-respond-to-liberal-groups-hate-list/

[QUOTE]Just before Thanksgiving, the leftist Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) came out with a report labeling the Family Research Council (FRC), the American Family Association and other family advocates as “hate” groups because of their stand for marriage.

“This is a deliberately timed smear campaign by the SPLC. The Left is losing the debate over ideas and the direction of public policy, so all that is left for them is character assassination. It’s a sad day in America when we cannot, with integrity, have a legitimate discussion over policy issues that are being considered by Congress, legislatures and the courts without resorting to juvenile tactics of name calling.”

From The National Prayer Network: http://www.truthtellers.org/alerts/splcattacks18christiangroups.htm

SPLC’s 10-page attack was distributed to 55,000 police officers in America. Called 18 Anti-Gay Groups and Their Propaganda, it encourages police to especially watch the hateful, violence-inciting propaganda from Christian/conservative “watchdog” organizations. These include the American Family Association, Concerned Women for America, Family Research Council, Coral Ridge Ministries, Liberty Council, and Traditional Values Coalition.

According to Dr. Gary Cass, who is affiliated with the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission, “To say that anybody who has a principled objection to homosexuality [and warns of] the impact that that sinful lifestyle has on individuals and on society is somehow morally equivalent to overt racism and violence is absolutely defamatory.” [4]

It’s not only defamatory, but as we now know, it incites violence.

FRC Shooter Pleads Guilty, Admits He Was Inspired by Left-wing Website;
WashPost Ignores That Critical Detail
By Ken Shepherd | February 06, 2013

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/ken-shepherd/2013/02/06/frc-shooter-pleads-guilty-admits-he-was-inspired-left-wing-website-was

A detail sure to re-ignite the culture wars that erupted around the shooting is the fact that Corkins told FBI agents that he identified the Family Research Council as anti-gay on the website of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The day after the shooting, the president of the Family Research Council, Tony Perkins, suggested that the law center’s labeling of the organization as a hate group had given Corkins a “license to perpetrate this act of violence.” On Wednesday, Perkins said the revelation had validated his earlier comments.

At the time of the shooting, conservative commentators had also accused media outlets of giving the shooting less coverage than other gun crimes because the perpetrator was a liberal. Those accusations resurfaced Wednesday.

Shooter chose conservative group to target from list of “hate groups” posted on SPLC website

I have little to add to what you’ve read from Ace, John Sexton, R.S. McCain, Erick Erickson and others. We’re all thinking the same thing — see Twitchy for proof — and we’re all correct: Why yes, this is eerily similar to the left claiming after Gabby Giffords was shot that Palin’s “crosshairs” election map inspired Jared Loughner.

With two differences.

First, Loughner was not, in fact, inspired by Palin whereas this guy, per his own plea bargain, did consult the SPLC website in choosing people to kill.

Second, you’ll see zero coverage of this inconvenient entry in the canon of political hate in wider media because it can’t be used as a blunt object with which to bludgeon the right.

Sometimes facts that undermine the Greater Good need to be politely omitted. That’s what responsible journalism is all about. http://hotair.com/archives/2013/01/15/good-news-from-jay-carney-egypts-jew-hating-president-is-committed-to-peace/

Prosecutors say Corkins, who had been volunteering at a center for gay, lesbian and transgender people, was carrying ammunition and Chick-fil-A sandwiches in his bag. Chick-fil-A was making headlines at the time because of its president’s stated opposition to gay marriage.

Corkins intended to smear the sandwiches in the faces of his victims to make a statement about gay rights opponents, he acknowledged during a hearing Wednesday…

In his plea agreement, Corkins acknowledged he identified the [Family Research] Council as “an anti-gay organization” by visiting Southern Poverty’s website. The head of the Council, Tony Perkins, called on the group to stop labeling his organization and others hate groups because of their stance on gay issues. A spokeswoman for the Alabama-based Law Center did not immediately return a telephone message…

“He targeted us because we had been labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which we think is very reckless,” [FRC employee Leo Johnson] says.

Absent a clear exhortation to violence, I don’t blame demagogues for what the most violent lunatics among their following derive from their demagoguery. That slope’s too slippery. The point here isn’t that the SPLC is to blame for what Corkins did, the point is that hysteria about incitement runs only one way in major media, with virtually no coherent explanation apart from raw partisan advantage. To believe (erroneously) that Palin’s map inspired Loughner but that the SPLC’s “hate map” didn’t inspire Corkins, you have to presume to read two incomprehensibly scrambled minds and conclude that the use of a symbol in a metaphorical context, rather than a blacklist devoted to shaming evil groups, is the tipping point for violent action. Why anyone would presume that, I don’t know; if we’re searching for catalysts to a rampage in a disturbed mind, there’s no obvious reason why demonizing someone by adding them to a “hate” list wouldn’t work just as well as, or better than, an electoral map that uses gun symbolism vis-a-vis defeating incumbents at the polls. Funny thing, though: The SPLC itself was verrrrry quick to try to tie Jared Loughner to the “far right”, and kept at it long enough that they were posting speculative pieces about “political rhetoric” and its role in the Tucson shooting as late as 13 days after it occurred. Not only are they comfortable with a free-speech slippery slope when it’s right-wingers who are at risk, they’re willing and eager to add some grease. They richly deserve the bad PR they’re getting today, even if they’re blameless in the shooting. If you doubt that, visit Reason’s extensive archive on SPLC nonsense.
