A major earthquake has struck near the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-7.6 quake was epicentered near the western Costa Rica town of Hojancha, about 87 miles west of the capital, San Jose.
The quake occurred at 8:42 a.m. Central Standard Time (local time in Costa Rica), or 10:42 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast from Mexico to Peru, and a tsunami watch for Chile.
