You Can Now Donate Your Wedding Gifts to the Obama Campaign

Political fundraisers are no strangers to online campaigns, but here’s a twist: The Obama campaign has launched an Event Registry, urging supporters to ask their friends and family to make a donation rather than send gifts to the happy couple, grad or anyone honored at a gift-worthy event.

“Instead of another gift card you’ll forget to use, ask your friends and family for something that will go a little further: a donation to Obama for America,” the Obama 2012 registry page reads.

You can create your own registry page by submitting your name, ZIP code, email address and a password. At that point, you may log in to your page with your Facebook credentials or email address. Add details about the event and a photo. The page may be shared on Facebook, Twitter or selected contacts.

Asking guests to contribute to an organization that’s near and dear to the honoree is an established practice. While few would quibble with a request to donate to cancer research instead of a traditional gift, making a contribution to a political campaign could rub some guests the wrong way. According to Emily Post online, “In the end, the choice of gift is always up to the giver.”
