Texas prom queen arrested for allegedly faking cancer, raising $17,000
By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow – 5 hrs ago

Angie Gomez has been accused of faking cancer (Image credit: El Paso Times)A Texas prom queen whose fellow students donated more than $17,000 to her charity has been arrested and accused of faking cancer.

ABC affiliate KVIA reports that 19-year-old Angie Gomez faces a felony charge and is being held on a $50,000 bond after being arrested on Friday. She is charged with starting a fake charity after falsely claiming to be suffering from leukemia.

Her fellow students donated to the "Achieve the Dream Foundation," which Gomez set up. She was also treated to her own prom by Da Vinci High School after missing the school's prom due to her alleged illness. That same month, police received an allegation that Gomez did not actually appear to be ill.

A subsequent investigation found that Gomez had never been a patient at the hospitals where she claimed to have been receiving treatment.

Her attorney Sheldon Myers says Gomez had "good intentions" for the money and did, in fact, suffer from health problems as a child.

In January 2011, Gomez told her classmates that she had six months to live after being diagnosed with leukemia. The El Paso Times reported that the $17,000 in donations included checks, gift cards and in-kind donations. "She has a real soft spot for people that suffer from those types of diseases, and that's why she was trying to get money for them," Myers said. He added that the $50,000 bond means that Gomez isn't likely to be released from jail. "She's not really happy, jail is not a pleasant place especially for a young lady like her who has never been in a place like that," Myers said.

"She's not really happy, jail is not a pleasant place"...really..?..do the crime..do the time..

...

She should have to volunteer at a cancer charity so that she will know the meaning of true charity and true suffering, although I'd hate to inflict her on cancer patients. They'd peobably band together and beat her...

..

She raised $17,000, the bond is $50,000, she can put up 10% which is $5,000. Where is the money she raised Attorney Myers? How is she paying your bill?

..

I'd bet the other students made her prom queen out of sympathy.

..

It's one of the reason people are reluctant to give money.

..

She could share a cell with the lady who faked cancer to get her dream wedding!

..

For her to fake having cancer is horrible. What a horrible little brat. And I seriously doubt she was raising that money to give to people with real cancer!! Dont make her out to be a saint, she is a liar and a thief. This story makes me sick, especially since I have had several friends and family members who have battled cancer, a few of them didn't make it. Keep her in jail for awhile, she is sick!!

..

IF she wanted to kids to have that money so bad she could have partnered up with a LEGITIMATE charity and worked with them, or volunteered for them. Not start up a fake charity and steal your classmates money and have them throw you your own prom because you were too busy to make the real one. What are kids thinking?! And WHERE WERE HER PARENTS for all of this? And WHY arent they in trouble ALSO!

..

I don't know if anyone notified this person but it IS possible to raise money for an illness without actually having the illness yourself...the ONLY reason you would need to lie about having the illness is so you can use the money for yourself. Plain and simple.
This attorney should be ashamed of himself to even TRY to defend this crap!!!!!

..

As a cancer patient I am willing to donate some real cancer cells so she can see how it is......She should be bullwhipped!!!!

New York bride accused of faking cancer to fund wedding
Reuters – Tue, Apr 10, 2012

(Reuters) - A New York bride accused of faking terminal cancer so she could raise money from sympathetic well wishers to pay for a dream wedding has been arrested and charged with fraud, authorities said on Tuesday.

Jessica Vega, 25, faces six felony charges. She claimed to have only a few months to live and wanted to fulfill a wish to experience a dream wedding.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, in a statement, said the woman had raised thousands of dollars with her cancer story, paying for a May 2010 wedding and a honeymoon to Aruba. After news of her plight spread, businesses such as a bridal dress shop and a restaurant donated to her cause.

It was later revealed that Vega, formerly of Montgomery, New York, had lied about her health. A local newspaper, the Times Herald-Record, reported that Vega's husband had called it four months after the wedding to accuse her of faking the illness.

The couple divorced over the incident, her former husband, Michael O'Connell, told the Orange County, New York, paper. O'Connell has not been charged in the matter.

But in a curious twist, the newspaper added that the couple had recently reunited.

"By pretending to have a terminal illness, Vega inexcusably took advantage of the community's hearts and minds, and profited off of their generosity," Schneiderman said.

Vega was arraigned on Friday and pleaded not guilty. The felony charges carry a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

'Cancer Bride' Says She Didn't Act Alone
By Alice Gomstyn | ABC News – 10 hrs ago.

The New York woman who faked a cancer diagnosis and scored thousands of dollars in wedding donations now says she didn't act alone. In her first broadcast interview, Jessica Vega told "20/20? co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas that a friend forged letters from doctors about her supposed cancer treatments and that Vega signed them.

Vega would not reveal the friend's identity, but said that person was no longer in her social circle. "I'm not a snitch," she said, but later added, "I don't need that person in my life anymore. "

Vega, 25, was living in Montgomery, N.Y. when she told her then-boyfriend, Michael O'Connell, that she was battling a rare form of leukemia and had six months to live. Word spread and soon Vega's story was featured in a local newspaper. Friends and those sympathetic to Vega's story came forward with donations of more than $13,000 to pay for the couple's wedding and honeymoon.

After the truth came to light, Vega was arrested, apologized and, last April, pled guilty to charges of scheming to defraud and possession of a forged instrument. She was sentenced to time served - fewer than two months - and released from prison last month. With the help her father, Vega has repaid her wedding donors.

O'Connell, who fathered two children with Vega, said he had no idea of her scheme and only grew suspicious after they married. The couple divorced months after the wedding but have since reconciled. While headline after headline has accused Vega of faking her illness to afford her "dream wedding," Vega said she concocted the story in a desperate attempt to save her relationship with O'Connell. She said that before she told him of her "cancer," O'Connell had moved out. At that point, the couple had one child together. "I felt like if I didn't have some way to get his attention, momentarily, that's it, I'm going to be a single mom," she told "20/20."

The couple moved back in together and made plans to marry. Day after day, Vega said she couldn't bring herself to come clean. "I could've woken up any day and told Michael the truth, but I was a coward," she said.

Though she served time in prison and paid back her donors, Vega knows that will never be enough to gain forgiveness from those she's wronged. "I'm well aware that there's no way that I'm ever going to be able to make it up to people, at the end of the day," she said. "All I can offer is my humble apologies."

"All I can offer is my humble apologies."

and appearently ... excuses ...

..

Oh, THANK GOODNESS this woman is "not a snitch". THAT would make her a terrible person.... It's good to see she is clearly of woman of only the highest moral character. Sheesh.

..

Ppl like her make me sick! My mom died of esophageal cancer @ the age of 44 any1 that could be that low isn't worth breathing oxygen. Very poor excuse of a human being.

..

timed served for a major felony how nice... for her

..

ROFL, "i'm not a snitch", no just a money grubbing con artist thief.

..

Many people say "I'm not a snitch". As if that were a good thing, a badge of honor. "I didn't tell on so and so, I didn't tell the Man". In reality it's just the oposit. Doing more harm than good. It condones the death of the drug user while elavating the sc-mbag Dealer, it lets the murderer run free while the victim is forgotten. Everyone who beleives snitching is bad, deserves what's coming to them.

Woman Sues 13-Year-Old Boy After Being Hit With a Baseball
By Jennifer Abbey | Good Morning America – Fri, Jun 22, 2012

A 45-year-old woman is suing a 13-year-old boy in New Jersey because she believes he intentionally threw a baseball at her face, the Asbury Park Press reported. Two years ago, Matthew Migliaccio was helping the pitcher of his Little League team in Manchester, N.J., for which he was a catcher, with his bullpen session. When he overthrew the ball, Matthew hit Elizabeth Lloyd in the face, causing multiple fractures.

Lloyd, who was at the game to watch her son, is now seeking $500,000 in damages for permanent injury she has suffered, according to the Asbury Park Press. She believes the teen intentionally hit her.

A court date has not been set yet.

"He throws his best fastball over the bullpen into the picnic area, striking my client in the face," Riaz A. Mian, Lloyd's attorney, told the Asbury Park Press. "Life is now different for my client."

Matthew, a Yankees fan, insisted it was not intentional. "I ran over to see if she was all right," Matthew told the Asbury Park Press. "She said she was OK. I was just on with warming the pitcher up, and I was not horsing around."

Anthony Pagano, the Migliaccio family's attorney, said the lawsuit is frivolous. "The litigation itself is disgusting," Pagano said. "Because a kid was throwing a baseball in a bullpen session, he is forced to retain counsel."

Bob Migliaccio, Matthew's father, said Matthew, who plays on three different teams, is obsessed with baseball. "Baseball is his thing," Migliaccio told the Asbury Park Press. "He is always out there playing, he loves it. I don't want that to change because of this."

Wow...she must have been so concerned with her "terrible" injury that it took two years to bring a lawsuit! Nice try, lady. Go back to buying lottery tickets.

..

When ever you attend a ballgame, you have to be watching at all times. You never know when there would be a bad throw, and foul tip. And with youngs boys or girls where their throws aren't always on target. Even the pros aren't always on target.

...

She also needs to sue: the pitcher for not catching the overthrown ball, the fencebuilder for not building it high enough, the park designer for putting a picnic area in such proximity to a bullpen, the baseball manufacturer for making it too hard, aaaand what else? What did I forget; OH, and Abner Doubleday's estate, just for good measure.

...

You forgot the coach, for not telling his kid not to hit that particular woman.

..

Is it too late to hit her with the bat?

...

Gee, at the ballparks here in California we even put signs out saying that if you park on the street near the field and your car gets hit it's your own fault. I think the same should be said about being around the field. Accidents happen. A half a million dollars, I'm thinking Elisabeth took a good one to the face, and it injured her brain, odd though that it doesn't state that she was pouring blood when she initally told the poor child she was fine.

...

There needs to be more consequences for frivilous lawsuits. It is about TIME we make people that file these idiotic lawsuits to buck up $$$ if they lose. They pay for everything, plus the pain and suffereing of the other family. Bet that would stop this crap asap..

...

This boy should be in the major leagues. To intentionally throw a ball from the bullpen, over the bullpen fence and into the picnic area, is a good throw at 13 years. But, to be able to also hit the lady in the face with the intentional throw of the fastball, that is better than a lot of pro pitchers. Better the lady and her blood sucking lawyer let it go as an accident, that happens many times, on the ball field.

...

Maybe he should be pitching for the MN Twins!!

..

listen to the quote of the attorney"save his best throw, just to hit the woman", this happened two years ago. bottom feeder attorney........
