Emily watches the parade just for her[/i]

NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAFB) - A young autistic girl in New Orleans got a special Mardi Gras treat Friday. Her mother said her child was mocked and humiliated by a group of drunk and unruly men at the Muses Parade Thursday night and parade organizers decided to do something special.

In the mother's blog, she says her and her daughter Emily arrived at the parade early, with much excitement and anticipation. Emily, a high functioning autistic child, had been counting down the days to the parade and even had a homemade calendar where she was marking the days.

The blog explains that even though they got their spot on the parade route early, a group of men with to-go cups of booze and cigarettes were cursing and standing in front of her and her daughter. Emily's mom says in her blog that one of them spilled beer on Emily and nearly burned her with a cigarette.

When she asked them to move so Emily could watch the parade, the comments made in ear-shot of Emily were enough to make Emily cry and ask her mother to leave the parade that she had waited months to see. The entire story can be read in the blog. <http://nolafemmes.com/2012/02/23/litupparade/>

The Muses heard of the incident and decided to hold a special event Friday called Emily-Gras, just for Emily.

"It was the most heartbreaking story, and Mardi Gras should be all about kids and good, clean fun, not idiots," said Renee Rich with the Krewe of Muses. "It's everyone's holiday. She should have been able to sit there and enjoy. And, even though this incident happened to her, we just want to try and make it right," said Raymond Oelking with the 610 Stompers.

Emily's mother says the girl was overwhelmed by all the attention.

Krewe of Muses will fete autistic girl jeered by drunken louts on parade routeFriday, February 24, 2012, 9:41 AM By Gordon Russell, The Times-Picayune

A heart-rending yarn posted on the NOLAFemmes blog yesterday has gone viral on social media, and it has inspired the Krewe of Muses to schedule a special event this morning. In short, here's the story: Author A.L. Mueller and her daughter, who is autistic, attended the Muses parade last week. Mueller's daughter had been looking forward to the parade for a month, even designing a calendar countdown.

The Krewe of Muses Friday will fete an autistic girl who was jeered by drunken louts during the krewe's parade last week. Once there, they found themselves next to a group of drunken jerks, including a college-age man who referred loudly to Mueller's daughter as a "retard." Her daughter, crestfallen, asked to leave the parade, and says she "doesn't want to do Mardi Gras. Not ever again."

It's a story worth reading, and many have -- the story already has more than 300 comments, many from other parents of special-needs kids.

Among the readers: members of the Krewe of Muses, who have decided to stage an event this morning in the girl's honor. At 11 this morning, the krewe is opening its den on South Claiborne Avenue at Clio Street, where the girl will be invited to climb into the group's signature shoe float.

She'll remember that for a long time. Good for them.
