Anyone have any experience with this? My Mom has it and she is to the stage now where there are days that she cant even get out of bed. About 2 -3 days a week she can get out of bed and walk with a walker. She has taken so many different kinds of medicine for the pain and nothing seems to be helping. I am trying my best to be strong and help as much as I can. She just turned 80 about a week ago. I know there is no magic cure for it, but if anyone knows any tips that may help her in any way I would so appreciate it. I am so stressed out and just cant think straight.

littlered1, I have osteoperosis, I am 43. My doctor told me to take 400 to 600 mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours for pain and I take calcium 1200 mg plus 1000 IU vitamin D3 once a day. It does take time for it to work. Check with her doctor before trying it. Good luck....

Check your local senior center or even YMCA and see if they have tia chi (spelled wrong) it is an exercise program that is designed to help with movement. My Mom's Dr. suggested she join the local class when she retired since she was having problems walking. It seems to help a lot. As for taking Calcium supplements - drink milk it is better for you and is absorbed better than any supplement - according to my Orthopedist he said the biggest thing those supplements do is reduce the amount of money in your pocket. If you don't like regular milk try Almond or Soy.

Or.. if she's lactose intolerant but loves milk... they now make lactose free! It's more expensive but man it is so nice to be able to drink milk again!

Thanks you guys! She is doing a calcium and pain relief nasel spray. It doesn't seem to be helping at all for the pain and is extremely expensive too. She also takes vicodin for the pain, sometimes her doctor gives her valium too. That seems like it helps the most maybe just to relax her so she can breath through the pain for a minute. She does use ibuprofen for pain most days. As for calcium and milk, she drinks milk.
I gave her a bunch of protien shakes and ensure drinks today, because I know she isnt eating right. Today wasn't too bad of a day for her, it was the first time I have seen her walk without her walker in about 3 months... so that was an amazing gift!
She has had 9 kids so we know what caused it and how to prevent it (now) but it just is so painful for her. We know women that have it and nobody hurts like she does, It just seems like something isn't quite right.

My Kitty Pa..... Do you have osteoperosis or osteopenia? Which is just the precurser or begining stages of osteoperosis. I have osteopenia, they gave me boniva for it. I am almost 46. Also, how many kids do you have? Thanks... and good luck!!

I have osteoporosis and my doc said it doesn't hurt unless there is a fracture. I guess your mother must have osteoarthritis.

I take a med for it---the generic Fosamax once a week. I also take calcium and vit. D. I should be more vigilant or I will get the arthritis like your mother. I hope she can find more relief for the pain. Did you do any research online?

It is osteoperosis, her spine is basically just collapsing. I have done a ton of research about it. Just seems like she should have some stronger medicine or something. She found out she had it about a year ago and since then she has developed the characteristic "dowagers hump". Part of her spine will collapse and it will hurt like hell for about 6-8 weeks and then the doctor said it will "fuse" and the pain will go away until it comes back in another spot. Which only takes about a week for that to happen.
