(Dec. 3) -- Hundreds of volunteers braved freezing temperatures today in a final push (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2010/12/last-push-underway-in-search-for-michigan-boys/1) to find three young Michigan boys, but the search for the missing brothers was called off this evening.
"For the most part, we are still trying to cover every square inch," Morenci, Mich., firefighter Bob Mohr told The Detroit News (http://www.detnews.com/article/20101203/METRO/12030413/1361/Volunteers-wrap-up-search-for-missing-Morenci-boys) before the effort was suspended at 5 p.m. "We're still doing roadside searches today, trying to comb the area in case something got thrown out, any clue."

The Skelton brothers -- Tanner, 5, Alexander, 7, and Andrew, 9 -- were last seen on Thanksgiving Day.
An estimated 200 volunteers searched today for 5-year-old Tanner (http://www.aolnews.com/tag/tanner-skelton/), 7-year-old Alexander (http://www.aolnews.com/tag/alexander-skelton/) and 9-year-old Andrew Skelton (http://www.aolnews.com/tag/andrew-skelton/). Searchers have been concentrating their efforts on wooded areas near Morenci, (http://www.aolnews.com/tag/morenci-mich/) 75 miles southwest of Detroit, the newspaper said.
The boy's father, John Skelton, 39, is being held in a Toledo, Ohio, jail on $3 million bond (http://www.aolnews.com/crime/article/missing-boys-father-john-skelton-held-on-3-million-bond/19740806) on three felony counts of parental kidnapping.
Skelton's sons were last seen (http://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/police-search-for-missing-michigan-brothers-andrew-alexander-and-tanner-skelton/19735431) on Thanksgiving Day in Morenci. The next day, Skelton turned up at a hospital after what he said was a failed suicide attempt.
The father said he had turned his sons over to a woman named Joann Taylor (http://www.aolnews.com/tag/joann-taylor/) because he did not want them to see him kill himself. Police said Monday that they had not been able to connect Skelton to anyone named Joann Taylor and they believe this story was a lie (http://www.aolnews.com/nation/article/roxann-skelton-grandma-of-missing-michigan-boys-makes-emotional-tv-plea/19736517).
Skelton had been admitted to a mental health facility in Ohio after his purported suicide attempt. He was arrested there on Wednesday. The unemployed truck driver has indicated that he plans to fight extradition to Michigan. His next court hearing is set for Dec. 14.

John Skelton has been charged with parental kidnapping in his sons' disappearance. He is being held at a jail in Toldeo, Ohio.
The father had been involved in a custody dispute with the boys' mother, Tanya Skelton (http://www.aolnews.com/tag/tanya-skelton/), who filed for divorce in September and was subsequently granted sole custody of the children.
Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks (http://www.aolnews.com/tag/morenci-police-chief-larry-weeks/) has said that although volunteer searches would end this evening, authorities will continue to follow leads in the case. However, Weeks has warned that police do not believe the case will have "a positive outcome."
Tanya Skelton thanked the searchers for all their hard work and support in a statement released (http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/news/family-of-missing-boys-supports-weekend-halt-to-search) Thursday.
"It is unbelievable to us that volunteers have come from states as far away as Texas," the statement read. "We know how hard everyone has been working wanting to bring our precious little boys [home] and we thank you."
The family also said they understand the decision by law enforcement to halt the volunteer searches.
"We support their decision to stop the organized search for the weekend to give volunteers the time to recuperate as well as to spend time with their own families," the statement said. "It will give the police the chance to reflect and refocus and decide what the next steps will be for everyone. We would not want a tragedy because volunteers are too tired."
