My hubby found out online yesterday that Target has stopped supporting Planned Parenthood by giving them money so we can shop there again. I guess boycotts do work, YEA.

Planned Parenthood at a Glance

Who We Are

Planned Parenthood is the nation's leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate. Planned Parenthood also works with partner organizations worldwide to improve the sexual health and well-being of individuals and families everywhere.

Planned Parenthood has 88 independent local affiliates that operate more than 840 health centers throughout the United States, providing high-quality services to women, men, and teens.

Planned Parenthood often is the only source of family planning for a large proportion of the women we serve.

Our Clients

Planned Parenthood affiliates provide sexual and reproductive health care, education, and information to five million women, men, and adolescents worldwide each year.

More than three million women and men in the United States annually visit Planned Parenthood affiliate health centers for trusted health care services and information.

Seventy-seven percent of Planned Parenthood health care clients in the U.S. are age 20 and older.

One in four women in the U.S. has visited a Planned Parenthood health center at least once in her life.

Our Work

Planned Parenthood health centers focus on prevention: 82 percent of our clients receive services to prevent unintended pregnancy.

Planned Parenthood services help prevent more than 621,000 unintended pregnancies each year.

Planned Parenthood provides nearly one million Pap tests and more than 850,000 breast exams each year, critical services in detecting cancer.

Planned Parenthood provides more than 3.3 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Three percent of all Planned Parenthood health services are abortion services.

Planned Parenthood affiliates provide educational programs to more than 1.2 million young people and adults each year.

Planned Parenthood has more than four million activists, supporters, and donors working for women's health and safety and our fundamental reproductive rights.

Join us in the fight for commonsense policies that foster the sexual and reproductive health and rights of individuals, families, and communities.

There will always be a reason for some to boycott one store or another, here is another of Target's contributions that have others upset:

If you are not for abortion, or the morning after pill, then you don't support it.

At my local health department (planned parent hood), they do not perform abortions, they can though refer you to who does if you want this kind of service. They also give morning after pills free to girls starting out at 12 years old, without parental permission.

Planned Parenthood is rooted in the courage and tenacity of American women and men willing to fight for women's health, rights, and equality. Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, is one of the movement's great heroes. Sanger's early efforts remain the hallmark of Planned Parenthood's mission:

The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
In 1966, Planned Parenthood Federation of America inaugurated the PPFA Margaret Sanger Award to honor the woman who founded America's family planning movement. In its first year, the award was bestowed upon four men, including the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.
providing contraception and other health services to women and men
funding research on birth control and educating specialists and the public about the results
advancing access to family planning in the United States and around the world
Women's progress in recent decades — in education, in the workplace, in political and economic power — can be directly linked to Sanger's crusade and women's ability to control their own fertility.

I'm not supporting them... they gave a significant amount of money to someone running for office who is anti-gay, lesbian, transgender, etc. but will not or have not as of yet given ANY money to anyone running for office who is pro-homosexuality.

Yes, this article... thanks Parrots. ;) http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20011983-503544.html

Planned Parenthood was there for me when I couldn't afford regular gyn visits. Not everyone has insurance and can afford a regular doctor. Bless 'em.

There will always be someone or some group who is always boycotting something. I shop at Target because I like the store. It is always clean & I love to aisle end cap shop. I drive 30 miles to get to this store.
I have a Wal-Mart store 5 minutes away but I avoid that store at all costs. It is always dirty and nasty.

So .... some are boycotting Target because they banned SA collections, Boy Scouts AND Girl Scouts booth sales; some because they support PP, some becasue they support certain political candidates .... it is a wonder they can keep the doors open.

Target is such a community minded organization -- they contribute to so many causes not supporting them because you don't like 1 of them is kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I'm a Target shopper. Target supports Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that send packages to deployed soldiers. My husband has received one package from them already this deployment. They've also donated money to the lower income schools in my city.

If you're gonna boycott a big box retailer, go after Wal Mart before anybody else. They're the worst corporate citizens. No one cares how much their individually perceived savings has really cost America.

And that's just barely the beginning of their shortcomings.

I know everyone has the right and reason they want to boycott whatever or whomever they want. But if you thought about (and researched it) there is probably a reason to boycottt EVERY store in existance. IMO
I Agree with iluvs with the bell ringers being a being turned off at target (them not allowing) because that is ONE charity that STAYS local here and helps alot of families.
But i'm sure if I researched it I would be appalled or dismayed by every store I shop at, at something they don't allow or whatever.

That is what I told my hubby but he still goes by the pro-life list of businesses. BUT we will probably still go to Walmart since it is the closest store to us and they have the lowest prices. I am happy though since if we are out we can shop at Target if we are running late and it is convenient. I have shopped there when hubby is not with me. I agree with all stores do something that we don't like.

captorquewrench

The whole point is...we should all be savvy consumers. Price is important, but it isn't all there is. Research stores you patronize; make your dollars spent count for something more! I cannot patronize stores that I think and know in my heart treat employees badly, practice predatory pricing and how that hurts local economies, has closed down american factories, provide inferior goods, have dirty stores, are huge EPA violators, and use profits to contribute to causes with which I disagree. This takes a LOT of work. Sometimes you have to choose between the lesser of the evils.

But...time and time again...I find that Wal Mart is the worst offender on this laundry list. And if you shop carefully and wisely exercising principles of good stewardship... you can save a lot of time and money by NOT shopping there. I know I have. Plus I feel a lot better about where I've spent my money. To me, that's worth a lot more than saving three cents here and there.

Wish you could convince my hubby. If it was up to me I would only shop Dillons/Kroger. That is the closest store to us. My hubby got some fruit that rotted fast and milk that soured fast there so he won't shop at Dillons. My sister said the same thing about her Walmart though. He says Walmart has the lowest prices and the best products he has bought. By the way we don't buy much meat there, we buy that at Dillons and only that.

Walmart can't make anyone work for them. It's still a free country. If people quit in droves maybe Walmart would change their treatment. I guess most of their employees like it or can put up with the working conditions. Walmart is the largest retailer in the world.

captorquewrench
08-19-2010, 09:33 PM
They can't quit in droves. Wal Mart has created a working poor class and keeps them where they want them.

As far as quality...those name brands wal Mart carries are actually manufactured to a lesser quality exclusively for wal mart. Especially the electronics.

Morning after pills to a 12 year old, I am quite sure you don't know the whole story on that one!
Our county eliminated the local Health Department and planned parenthood has been a blessing to alot of teens and women here. They do a tremendous amount of good in this community!

yes, my, and many others, health departments offer the morning after pill to girls as young as 12 years old, without the parents consent.
I called my health department and asked them myself. Call yours and ask about the age.

Planned parenthood has been a tremendous help to me also.

If a 12 year old needs a morning after pill then they need to find out who is having sex with her and have him arrested if he is older than 21. Planned Parenthood will not ask and also they tell the girl to keep it quiet. I wouldn't call that helping. That is exploiting the child.

jasmine
08-29-2010, 07:21 AM
The age on consent is 16 in oklahoma, meaning, no matter how old you are, you can have sex with a 16yr. old and older.
I have checked into this. And I don't know how everyone elses health department works in the world, as I'm just from a smaller community/town. I talked with the nurse that works up at the health department, since I am the parent of 2 girls, and I asked what all went on up their.

They offer it to 12 and older, including birth control etc.. paps
They counsel with the girl, tell them they can offer counseling if the child would like. I really don't know if they tell them to keep quiet or not, as they offer help if they need it.
Talks to them about the pill, what all it entails, and what side affects etc....
There are still alot of parents out there who do not communicate with there kids very well at all, and alot of girls can't go to there mom's or dads etc... to talk to them, or get help and stuff, they would get the **** beat out of them. That is why they can go to the planned parent hood to get on birth control without the parents consent, or the morning after pill.... alot of them can't go to there parents, and alot of them know that they need birth control, because they are having sex.

Planned parenthood offers so much more than abortions, or the morning after pill, my health department does not perform them, they refer you out somewhere else to do it/for help.

Paps, birth control, childrens immunizations, womens health problems, I know one time I had a UTI and didn't have insurance, I didn't know they helped in that area also, I got some meds for it.
WIC, speech therapy for children, counseling, and more.

anyway, target...

also, I come from a small town walmart, and the people here seem to like it really well working there.
Everyone knows everyone...... and no one gets treated like crap here, so what's the big deal on walmart treating there employees bad? Or is that in just certain areas?

Jasmine, I think it really depends on the store manager as to how the employees get treated. My cousin works for Walmart and when her husband was dying of brain cancer, she was treated really well by management at her store. They scheduled her just enough to where she could keep her insurance going and even let a close friend of her's off when my cousin needed her to be with her.

Now I have heard complaints about the way they treat their employees, I have a co worker that used to work for them and they treated him horribly. They lost a very good worker in him because of the way they treated him so they lost in the end.

it's an anomaly for a wal mart to treat their employees well. some individual stores are responding to the pressure and poor track record of wal mart in general.

I believe Target compensated "the bell ringers" for the amount they would have otherwise collected. I may be in the minority here but the "bell ringers' annoy me. I donate to the charities I choose.
