SAYREVILLE, N.J. – New Jersey State Police are searching for a 3-month-old after her father told them he threw his daughter off a river bridge.

The search Wednesday is centered on the Garden State Parkway's Driscoll Bridge, which spans the Raritan River between Sayreville and Woodbridge.

Authorities say 21-year-old Shamsiddin Abdur-Raheem ripped daughter Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem from her grandmother in East Orange on Tuesday and fled with the baby. Police found him at a relative's home in Winslow Township.

Winslow police Lt. Michael Hoffman says Abdur-Raheem, of Galloway Township, told authorities he threw his daughter off the bridge into the river.

The child's mother, Venetta Benjamin, had sought a restraining order against the man Tuesday. Her lawyer, Mitchell Liebowitz, says the baby was snatched before the order was served.

I hope he's lying and the baby is somewhere hidden but safe.

If this poor excuse of a human being did this to an innocent baby, I hope they fry his ass.

I hope he's lieing too because that baby didn't stand a chance. She's so little. Maybe they ought to throw his butt off the same bridge. I feel so sorry for the mom and family.

NEWARK, N.J. – A New Jersey man has pleaded not guilty after police say he told them he threw his 3-month-old daughter off a bridge.

Twenty-one-year-old Shamsiddi Abdur-Raheem appeared composed during his video arraignment Thursday in Newark. He is charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, aggravated assault and child endangerment.

The child's mother watched in court but had no visible reaction. Officials say she had sought a restraining order against Abdur-Raheem.

Officials say he snatched Zara Malani-lin Abdur from her grandmother Tuesday and told them he threw the girl off a river bridge.

Search teams have found no sign of the baby. State Police Sgt. Julian Castellanos says the mission is still a rescue attempt even though the odds of a baby surviving this long are slim.

This undated file photo provided by Venetta Benjamin shows her daughter Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem.

SAYREVILLE, N.J. – A body found near a New Jersey river may be that of a 3-month-old girl who police say was thrown off a highway bridge by her father earlier this year.

Sgt. Stephen Jones says clothes and wrappings in which the child were found Saturday are consistent with the descriptions given of 3-month-old Zara Malani-Lin Abdur-Raheem. But he says the baby is considered unidentified until DNA testing or other means can prove her identity.

Police say the baby's father, Shamsid-Din Abdur-Raheem, confessed that he threw the infant off a bridge Feb. 16. They say Abdur-Raheem had snatched the baby from her grandmother's arms several hours earlier while the child's mother was in court getting a restraining order against him.

Abdur-Raheem has pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges.

Aw she was so little and cute. This jerk deserves the death penalty. At least he can't hurt her anymore. I feel so sorry for the mom and the families of the baby. Someone tell me how the father of a baby could throw an innocent baby off a bridge knowing she didn't stand a chance of surviving.
