MTV's "Jersey Shore" gains protesters, loses ads

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – The ruckus over MTV's "Jersey Shore" is getting as intense as the hot-headed dramatics on the show.

The controversial new reality series chronicling a spirited group of self-described "guidos" living in a New Jersey beach house has drawn protests of increasing volume. Now it appears that calls for a boycott are having an impact.

The Italian-American group UNICO (which also protested HBO's "The Sopranos") has asked members to complain to MTV's advertisers. In the past couple of days, two advertisers on the show -- Domino's Pizza and American Family Insurance -- have pulled out of the series.

In addition, one major media outlet reported that MTV New York offices were receiving death threats because of the show. The network has denied the report.

"('Jersey Shore' furthers) the popular TV notion that Italian-Americans are gel-haired, thuggish ignoramuses with fake tans, no manners, no diction, no taste, no education, no sexual discretion, no hairdressers (for sure), no real knowledge of Italian culture and no ambition beyond expanding steroid- and silicone-enhanced bodies," blasted New York Post critic Linda Stasi on Monday. "Would that programing ever have been allowed if the group were African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics, Jewish people?"

MTV president of programing Tony DiSanto, an Italian-American, has remained largely mum on the subject, though he told one group, "The cast takes pride in their ethnicity. In fact, it is a key driver of how they bond with each other and self-identify. They refer to themselves as 'guidos' in a positive manner."

Former "Hills" cast member Spencer Pratt defended the network on Twitter: "Linda Stasi you should change your name to Linda Boring if you can't be entertained by young Italian-Americans enjoying youth and partying!"

The initial round of criticism didn't seem to help "Jersey Shore," which debuted Thursday to a relatively modest 1.4 million viewers.

Adding to the drama is a clip from an MTV teaser for an upcoming episode of the show that's making the rounds online. It shows a man punching out one of the female housemates. But it's unclear if any of the conflict -- onscreen or off -- will improve the show's ratings.

I saw the opener, being a Jersey Girl I was curious. People like that do exist here in Jersey, but they aren't the norm, just a very small percentage. They're in Seaside or what I fondly call Sleazeside which is a party town at night. Been there, done that but luckily it wasn't like that 2 million years ago when I was young, I grew up when Bruce ruled the Shore.

I have to say I'm pretty embarrassed by this show and RHONJ (which I watch of course), although I adore The Sopranos ... go figure.

They also don't show enough of the beautiful beaches we have, Jersey really is a pretty place.

I watched it and I love the hot mess that Jersey Shore is. I'm half Italian and don't find it offensive at all. Most people with a brain know that the Guido culture isn't typical of all Italians.
On RHONJ, I watch that snarkfest as well. lol.

We watch it. For the same reason we watch Real World, the challenges and bad girls club (all made by the same ppl). The Drama!!! I love it and I will continue to watch it as long as they show it. Actually, if they pulled it I'd be pretty darn upset... I watched the previews for the season and it looks damn good... so I wanna see it until the end. I'd be bummed if they didn't make another season but i'd be PISSED OFF if they didn't atleast finish this one.

Read on MTV last night that they are wanting to remove the scene where snooki gets punched next week.

Someone posted the scene over on TWOP and Snooki got hit hard. The guy tried to steal her drink and she yelled at him then he punched her. Thank goodness he was arrested.

Here's the video from the Huffington Post. It's awful.

Yeah... one article says they removed it cause it's been taken out of context... well now I think it needs to be shown even more... so that it can be put in context AND to show the consequences of this guys actions. Furthermore, I fail to see why it is causing so much controversy. I know it's a guy hitting a girl... but it's reality and it does happen and they don't take other fight scenes out of any other show... and the reality of what happens when a guy hits a woman NEEDS to be shown as well!

NJ judge won't block 'Jersey Shore' DVD release
Mon Feb 22, 8:55 pm ET

TOMS RIVER, N.J. – A New Jersey man who says he was beaten during an episode of MTV's reality show "Jersey Shore" has lost his bid to stop the release of a video depicting it.

Stephen Izzo Jr. says a show cast member punched him outside a Seaside Heights nightclub.

Superior Court Judge Joseph L. Foster ruled Monday that Izzo "failed to demonstrate any financial or irreparable harm" he'd suffer from the distribution of a DVD box set of the first season of the show, which focuses on the escapades of eight 20-something Italian-Americans thrown together at a shore house last summer. The judge says producers obscured the Bayville resident's face.

MTV says the show will be back for another season despite complaints by Italian-American groups that it promotes ethnic stereotypes and is "wildly offensive."

'Jersey Shore' canceled
By Dave Nemetz | Yahoo! TV – 3 hours ago

The party's over for the "Jersey Shore" crew: MTV has announced it's ending the fist-pumping reality hit after next season.

http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/iCsw2M0t_A2S1Yx.UwysRg--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMwMA--/http://media.zenfs.com/en_us/News/TVGuideOMG/120803jersey-shore-cast2_300x206.jpg

Debuting in 2009 (it feels like much longer ago, doesn't it?), "Shore" became a genuine cultural phenomenon with its portrait of eight young guidos and guidettes drinking and fighting their way through a summer on the Jersey shore. Cast members like Snooki and The Situation became household names, catchphrases were repeated ad nauseum ("Cabs are here!"), and MTV enjoyed the biggest ratings in network history.

But as the seasons wore on, the charm of the "Shore" crew wore off. Sudden fame and huge salary demands have transformed the cast from likable newcomers to bored millionaires. (They're scheduled to pull in as much as $150,000 per episode next season.) Ratings have dipped accordingly -- last season's premiere pulled in a million fewer viewers than the previous year -- and inevitable life changes like Snooki's surprise pregnancy and engagement led many to wonder if the gang could keep up their hard-partying ways much longer. (Turns out they couldn't.)

MTV doesn't have much of a Plan B, either: "Shore" spinoffs "The Pauly D Project" and "Snooki & JWoww" have underwhelmed so far (although "Snooki" has been renewed for Season 2), so it looks like this gravy train will be coming to a full stop pretty quickly. Unless... "Jersey Shore: The Next Generation," anyone?
