My grandson asked me to help him spell the words for his Christmas list. He only had 2 things on it. He told me he was asking Santa for the things he wanted that mama doesn't have the dollars for. I don't remember ever having the intelligence to think of that, but I bet many children do.
He's 5.

Children are smarter than we give them credit for.

You didn't state how old he is, but I assume early elementary, as he was asking for spelling help.
I think that in these economic times, kids are more aware of mom and dad not having as much because they hear so much about it. Even if it is a snip on the news about the hard times, or the adults in their lives talking about it.

I know I did.
I think people forget how bad things were economically in the late 70s early 80s., I remember being poor. One year, I had to have been about 8, helping my dad paint repo houses on the weekend for us to have money for Christmas.

My grandmother had to tell her kids when they were young that they had to be careful what to ask Santa for because come January he sent her a bill for the stuff and she had to pay it back.
It was a good way of getting across the not asking for too much while still keeping the Santa thing alive.
Funnily enough, sitting here trying to remember, I dont even remember coming up with lists. I guess I just knew better then to ask for anything that costs money.

I remember when my oldest daughter moved out of the house, my son was 6 or 7, about a year after she moved out (age 7 or 8 ), my son and I were talking and I asked him how he felt about her moving out.... he got really deep on me, he was SO articulate and in touch with what he was feeling... FREAKED ME OUT!! I didnt realize that he could articulate how he felt that well.. I told him to write his sister a letter telling her exactly how he felt about her moving out..and to put everything in the letter that he had told me... he sent the letter, but she never answered... I guess she felt really guilty about how she made her brother feel...
