Well, they say things happen for a reason. I am trying to go with that.
Wed I found out for positive that I do have osteoporosis. I felt I did as I have had several spontaneous bone breaks but I still hated hearing it for positive. Thursday I found out that I am going to have to have a needle biopsy or a surgical biopsy of my breast. I am on steroids for my Crohns so it has to be delayed until I am off of them. 3 months. So I have 3 months to dread and worry about that. To top it off, my pain pills that I take one of each morning have turned up missing. So I am having to do without. I feel like crap so I must be addicted and this is what it feels like to go off of it.
Getting old is not bad, it is the health problems that are. I have had them since I was a kid. I am trying to keep it in mind that things happen for a reason but I don't always understand what it is.

I hope you get to feeling better soon.Do you know who took your meds? Thats not good if you have been taking them everyday you will have withdrawls. You should call your DR and see if they can call more in for you.

it seems with medical issues when it rains it pours. my mom has polycystic kidney disease, then found out she had skin cancer(got that taken care of TG!) now she has diabeties, high blood pressure, and now osteoporosis . it really sucks when things go wrong, but she's gotten through it, and i'm sure you will too. i'm not going to lie it took a toll on her, she became depressed and ultimately needed to be put on anti-depression medication but i still have my mom and im thankful for that!
Best of luck to you, you'll be in my thoughts!
Edited to add: my step father was on pain killers for about a year for a back injury. he was totally addicted to the point he was buying them off the street! He ultimately went to his drs and told them about it, they put him on some patch that had pain meds in it and he was able to get out of the withdrawl stage and finally off the pain meds. hth.

You know coming off the steroids is going to make you feel like crap right? You will find that all the years you were taking them it was helping or masking problems you never relized you had. I took 60 mg a day for over a year. I am rather shocked your doctor never did a bone scan earlier while being on them. I am a 35 y\o f and my doc requested that I have a bone scan to see what kind of damage had been done from taking the steroids. I know you have to take them for the Chrons but I wish you the best of luck coming off from steroids was hell. My hair thinned while I was on them I threw up and I was weened off them slow

You can develop tolerance and will go through withdrawls with any long term medication if it's stopped abruptly. It doesn't mean you're addicted if you're using it properly and for what it's intended for. It means your body has built up a tolerence and that's why you feel so nasty. As an RN you should know that it's dangerous to abruptly stop any narcotic or any medication that's been taken long term, especially if you're unhealthy already. You might want to tell your doctor that your pills have turned up missing and get something to do a gradual taper. Do you have any clue to where they could be?
Check with your doc on having to wait 3 months. I needed to have a procedure done a few months back and he let me taper my does down then have it done. After about a week I restarted when the chance of post op infection was pretty much gone.
Good luck and I hope you feel better.

Thanks everyone. I go to the dr Tuesday. I will have to go 2 weeks more without the pain pills. Yes I think I know who took them. I am taking a large cortisone dose but I plan to get off it more quickly than 3 more months. If I have to go back on I will. Yes my dr has wanted the bone scan for osteoporosis but I weigh 300 lbs but the girl who did the heel test at the health fair found a machine that will take up to 350. Also the biopsy will have to be done the old fashion way because I weigh 309 and the machine for the needle biopsy only holds 300. I told her I would lose 9 lbs but the dr said with me on steroids she didnt think I could. I can sure try. Although the needle biopsy sounds worse than the surg but the surg means no swimming for 6 weeks.

OH NOOO at least it wasn't for me. Imagine having your breast compressed in a mammogram machine & then having a thin needle threaded through. The core biopsy is even worse. With the surgical boipsy I was alseep & the doctor too the entire lump & surrounding tissue & a few lymph nodes.

This detox hasn't been bad. I had read how horrible it was going to be.
Now I don't know whether to lose this 9 lbs or try to gain some more. LOL Everyone I've ever spoken to said the needle biopsy was horrible. She said with the surgery I would have to have a wire inserted in my breast and then go to surgery, that is how she will know where to cut so maybe now it is just as bad. Anybody else have the wire thing before surgery? Sounds inhumane.

My lump was able to be felt with fingertips. I had mine surgically removed. All I remember was my anestilogist sing "The Way You Look Tonight" & waking up in recovery. The only needle I remember is the IV so I don't think I had a needle inserted.
For the needle biopsy, first you are given an injection of Lidocaine. they you are put into a mammogram machine only your breast is held there longer. Once the mass is located, a thin needle is inserted into the breast & a small portion is removed. This may be done several times.
A core biopsy, again you are numbed but think about how a pen can click, well every click is a needle going into your breast & taking a larger sample. Trust me, both hurt. I was just fortunate (ok breast cancer is not fortunate) but I did not have to have the needle inserted again before surgery.
If you have any other questions, PM me, been there & going there again.
