Police early this morning caught an alleged burglar hiding behind a door the Tobacco Hut at 5714 Hickman Road.
Nicholas Scott Smith, 19, of Des Moines was charged with third-degree burglary and taken to Polk County Jail.
Police were called to the store by a commercial alarm around 1:39 a.m. Officers found the front door locked, but with broken glass lying around it. A back door was unlocked, but something behind it prevented an officer from opening it.
On a second attempt to enter the back, the door opened, and an officer spotted the elbow of the suspect through the crack of the door.
Police say Smith was taken into custody without incident and that he admitted to trying to break out the front window.
