1999 Ford Escort Sport or ZX2?

Just to give you a heads up because I was unaware of it, but, at between 120,000 and 140,000 miles the #4 cylinder comes apart, and blows the engine. We were hoping for an easy fix, no such luck

I had this happen this past week. I had 128,000 on the engine, and it is toast. To replace would cost me $3000. So, I decided I had rather put the money toward a different, newer car. I got a 2004 Sebring fully loaded, including sunroof. It is an awesome car, now i just have to keep my DH out of it.

thats about the time mine fell apart too. everything went wrong with it.. so i too got a different vehicle. but up until that time it never failed to start one time. well cept the time the alternator went out, lmao. it was a 1999 zx2. i loved it until then.

I dont have one, but I have been looking for something small with good gas milage to drive to work....The Escort was on my list. Not anymore, THANKS!

It is a common problem with that engine, Ford knew about it, but never recalled it.

Like Lynn, I never had problems with the car, other than having to put a new starter in it. I had the Sport. That one and the ZX2 have the same motor. The other model, the cheapy one, doesnt have this problem because it has a different engine.

Yup, thats what happened to my 2000 Ford Focus at the same mileage mark!

What engine do you have? What model of escort?

It is the 2.0 that has all the problems. This came in the Sport and the ZX2. The plain Escort is fine as it has a different motor. Like I said, it usually goes between 120,000 and 140,000.
