Obama: America "One of the Largest Muslim Countries in the World"

As we noted earlier, and as ABC now confirms http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/06/abc-news-jake-tapper-and-sunlen-miller-report-the-other-day-we-heard-a-comment-from-a-white-house-aide-that-neverwould-have.html Obama's speech in Cairo will focus on his Muslim roots http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2009/06/the_settlements_distraction.asp and the unique perspective it provides him.

Obama also teased the contents of the speech in an interview with a French television station: http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Transcript-of-the-Interview-of-the-President-by-Laura-Haim-Canal-Plus-6-1-09/

"What I want to do is to create a better dialogue so that the Muslim world understands more effectively how the United States but also how the West thinks about many of these difficult issues like terrorism, like democracy, to discuss the framework for what's happened in Iraq and Afghanistan and our outreach to Iran, and also how we view the prospects for peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

Now, the flip side is I think that the United States and the West generally, we have to educate ourselves more effectively on Islam. And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslims Americans, we'd be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. And so there's got to be a better dialogue and a better understanding between the two peoples.

Surely President Obama is smarter and more worldly than the last White House occupant, but there are not 57 states in the Union -- and if there were, the United States would still not be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. Eight million Muslims seems to be at the high end of estimates of America's Muslim community. That number barely puts the United States in the top 40. There are more Muslims in tiny Jordan than there are in the United States, and twice as many in Syria.

Obama is undertaking a very significant reorientation of American foreign policy, and one hopes that he isn't doing so on the very mistaken belief that the United States is one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. Actually, if you look at the number of Jewish Americans, we'd be the largest Jewish country in the world after Israel. And America is the largest Christian country in the world. This context might be useful to the president as he tries to help the Muslim world better understand the United States.

Obama lied about his family's faith during his campaign.

From Obama's Fight the Smears website: http://fightthesmears.com/articles/3/baracksfaith

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_L6pDyjqqsvY/SiXmGgl3OvI/AAAAAAAAb3g/JKGeU0Lpdb0/s1600-h/obama+muslim.JPG

When people fabricate stories about someone’s faith to denigrate them politically, that’s an attack on people of all faiths.

During the 2008 Campaign Barack Obama's website claimed that Obama's father was an agnostic or atheist:

“Barack” is the candidate’s Kenyan father’s name; Obama’s middle name, “Hussein,” is his grandfather’s name. Obama has described his father as atheist or agnostic.

Today we find out his father Barack Obama Senior was indeed a Muslim.
Jake Tapper reported: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/06/abc-news-jake-tapper-and-sunlen-miller-report-the-other-day-we-heard-a-comment-from-a-white-house-aide-that-neverwould-have.html

During a conference call in preparation for President Obama's trip to Cairo, Egypt, where he will address the Muslim world, deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications Denis McDonough said "the President himself experienced Islam on three continents before he was able to -- or before he's been able to visit, really, the heart of the Islamic world -- you know, growing up in Indonesia, having a Muslim father -- obviously Muslim Americans (are) a key part of Illinois and Chicago."

But, the media did not just cover for Obama and his father.

The media also insisted his Kenyan grandmother was a Christian. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1982271/posts

USA Today had a story about Barack Obama’s grandmother in Kenya, in which she slams the Clinton campaign for circulating photos of Obama in Muslim garb—and then states that she is a Christian: Obama’s grandma slams ‘untruths’. http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-03-05-obama-kin_N.htm

Obama’s grandfather had converted to Islam from Roman Catholicism and taken the name Hussein, Sarah Obama said, but his children had inherited only the name, not the religion. Each person should be able to choose how they worshipped, she said. “In the world of today, children have different religions from their parents,” she said. She, too, is a Christian.

However : In April of last year, Sarah Hussein Obama told the New York Times she is a devout Muslim. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/30/us/politics/30obama.html?ex=1335585600&en=f901477fd875c685&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&pagewanted=all

Sarah Hussein Obama, who is his stepgrandmother but whom Mr. Obama calls his grandmother, still rises at 5 a.m. to pray before tending to her crops and the three orphans she has taken in. “I am a strong believer of the Islamic faith,” Ms. Obama, 85, said in a recent interview in Kenya.

But, this past month we learned that this "Christian" grandmother is going to attend The Hajj. http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2009%5C05%5C03%5Cstory_3-5-2009_pg7_14

She just might be the first Christian to attend the Hajj in years.

It's more of that change we've been looking for.

Very sad.....

So you are saying that Obama didn't state that the U.S. is one of the largest muslim counries?

Do you think that is accurate? or is that just O's wishful thinking?

the quote came from here.... http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_...l-Plus-6-1-09/

Hardly propoganda......

A blogger's opinion, yeah possibly....but this came from his mouth from a 'white house' site.

And agreed, I think this whole thing is very sad.....only on a different level.

:hmmmm: Ever think that some of 'daily crap' has some validity?

Exactly it's an opine with an opine commentary.. and full of gloom and doom bs.. Don't you people have anything better to do than find news stories dogging our country? I mean really.. There IS other stuff going on in this country other than recirculating the same BS over and over ad nauseum..

Sad....

And that's my opinion and I said what I wanted to say and I'm done:)

Well, you do have an opinion and it's "you don't give a shiz".....possibly others do.

I don't slam you and shout BS, etc. over topics that you do give a 'shiz' about and discuss.....

And I find it very disturbing that some can't look past the 'opinions' and see the grains of truth in some of the things that are posted, or they just ignore it. Do you realize that your (our) President just 'declared' to the world that our country is "One of the Largest Muslim Countries"? That's no one's opinions, that's fact.

If you really don't want to know, skip over it.....:shrug

When only Jolie and I have posted and you make a comment such as that, how does one not take that 'personally'?

As for my comment about 'skipping it'....you said the 'doom and gloom' posts are disturbing to you.....I meant, 'skip' the thread....I do it all the time to topics that I don't want to get involved in or care not to read. But, you did enter the discussion of the topic and I responded. And yeah, there are some postings/posters that I unsually skip for different reasons too....

Yeah, he did say it.....Jolie posted the interview of his words, not a blog or opinion.....

from your link....

He sought to downplay the expectations of the speech, but he said he hoped the address would raise awareness about Muslims.

So in their opinion, he said it but didn't mean it?

Yup, he did say it.....:agree

Hard-core rhetoricians will note that Obama was employing an obscure tense known as the “conditional,” and an arcane rhetorical device known as a “hypothetical.” He said that if you were to take the number of Muslims in America, then one could see America as ranking up there with other Muslim countries — in numerical, hypothetical terms.

And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslims Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.

Nowhere do I see him say America is a Moslem country. I guess it all depends on one's reading comprehension skills.
