I am self employed and I do have a contract with a large company but I only work when they have work for me....so far I have only worked 2 wks for them this yr. They say its pretty bleak for now and dont expect to have stuff for me any time soon. So I got a part time job working at a local grocery store-doing whatever they needed. It was great because it was only a few blocks away and they were all so nice and flexible. Its a "Mom and Pop" grocery store-not a chain. Well today they called everyone in....they are closing the store at the end of the month!!!!!! I wont be able to collect unemployment or get severance etc. I am totally freaking out! The worst part is that the store is CLOSING! Its been a neighborhood institiution for decades!

My gosh, it is really getting scary with all the good folks losing their jobs and so many places closing. How sad. I sure hope that you can find something else quickly.

Thanks everyone. Another thing that is really sad about them closing is that a lot of the seniors in the area could walk there or call in their order and they would delivery their groceries to them! This place is such a neighborhood icon and the same family has owned it for over 50 yrs. But they just couldnt compete anymore. There were and still are a lot of tears.
As for me...my boyfriend has been totally amazing. His uncle has offered me a job answering phones and doing some paperwork jobs at their shop. This will be a last resort as I have never done anything like that before AND working with Joe might not be such a good thing! LOL Plus their shop is about 45 mins away. But at least I have something if I cant find anything else.

Im sorry to hear about your job loss and the store closing. Im sure it is going to hit the seniors hard too that you were talking about.
I wonder if it could be an opportunity for you to maybe start a delivery service from the bigger grocery stores for those seniors and charge a small amount?

That is a really cool Idea. I would loved to do something like that but I wouldn't know how it would work around my area. Also you could take some of the women to hair appoinments or to doctors appoinments too. It would make your insurance go up but it would help them and you.
whatever

Hey thats a good idea! My Mom does this for her neighbors and they pay her gas money (she just does it to keep herself busy). She also takes people to appointments too.

If the store hasnt closed yet, maybe the owner would let you make up some flyers to put in everyones grocery bag as they leave that explains the store is closing but you will be offering a delivery service from other stores. I hope it can work out for you.
