This is not a movie for your kids.

I had never read the book.. knew nothing about the movie other than the cool previews they showed on tv. I like those kinds of movies.. so we all went last night.

First off.. before anyone decides they can't resist the chance to flame me... yes.... I knew it was rated R... BUT.. normally these types of movies are R because of the shooting...and or violence... and in certain movies I do allow my almost 9 yr old to watch some.... I monitor all of her movies... so that really isn't an issue...

BUT.. what the previews do not tell you... and what the rated R does not tell you... is that this movie should have been NC17.. it was practically soft porn.

There is a guy who is naked most of the time... and yes.. you see ALL of him..often.
You also see a lot of boobs

There are 2 characters who have sex.. and it is all shown... I mean other than porn up close shots it is all shown....

There is an almost rape scene..

There is a ton of cussing... F this.. F that... GD this.. GD that..

and of course the violence that I expected.

I spent a good deal of the movie cover my dd's eyes..lol

I understand that it was my responsability to screen this movie first... it was a spur of the moment decision to go.. since we were up at the mall anyway... but I really do wish they would have rated this movie more appropriately.

sorry you had a shock experience with the movie. I go online and check out the movie and see why it is rated R before I go.

THANK YOU.

my hubby wanted me to go with the kids. we always check rating on fandango.com before looking up showtimes. So I probably would of declined going with him and the kids

it is good to hear from someone who saw the movie. ty

we normally do too.. but this was a spur of the moment thing... we were up in Va (50 min from us.. but the closest real mall..lol) and hubby says lets see a movie... and we looked at what was playing... lol... between the sign at the theater and the previews.. it looked like the best one..... oh were we wrong..lol

and I am honestly confused as to how with that much nudity it didn't get a nc17 rating...

but.. without kids.. it was a good movie.. just not what I expected

I'm glad you posted this. We too monitor McKenzie's movies and usually take her to the super hero movies because like you said they usually get their rating from violence which isn't an issue with her. We'll be sure to steer clear of this one with her though.

Okay...I just had to say this....(cause it bugs me)....It's rated 'R'.

So there really shouldn't be a warning for parents.

Just like most comic action movies are PG-13....so kids shouldn't be watching them. We have ratings for a reason.

You want to take your kids (general 'you' not directed at OP) to see severed arms, people on fire, exploding bloody people, knives to the neck, nucler explosions, and rape...then go ahead.

Be a good parent and think.

I had much rather my DD see a naked blue man than so much violence, but that's just me. She won't be watching it right now either way tho.

Not sure if it varies by state but rated R =nc17.No children under 17 allowed without a parent because it is inappropriate.

Too bad they didn't make it so that more people (kids - by 'kids' I mean teens, not little kids) could see it. I personally don't care for all the F'ing, and DG'ing etc... they could do it without all that, and still do it well, if they had the intelligence. It doesn't take much imagination to write "F this" and "F that".

Isn't it from a comic book ?? Anyone know ?? Was that language in the comic book ?

I did see Gran Torino... it was awesome, but, had a lot of filthy mouth in it too... well, lol, racism too, and hate. But I guess you had to understand what the people were about to appreciate the movie... which was great !

I didn't grow up in a home where the F word was used... especially by women... Mom always told us that people didn't respect women that talked that way... and, we owned businesses, and I never did hear people talk like that.

My Dad, brother, and all my uncles were service men, they say that's all ya hear in the military............. they just didn't talk like that around us females of the family, out of respect I guess.

The movie was based on a graphic novel.

Yes the violence and language are used in it. Actually I was surprised because I didn't make the mental realization on just how violent it was until I saw the movie. Otherwise the everything is the same. It's based off an adult comic for adults...why dumb it down for kids who weren't alive in the 80's to appreciate the satire?

I bought the 1st one in the series in 1986 because my son asked for it, one of his older friends had it. I wasn't sure I wanted him to read it because he was only 6-7 at the time, so I read it 1st to see how violent it was and was hooked! I had all 12 of them. At some point I bought one with all 12 together and ended up selling it on Ebay. I have the ebooks now.

I was afraid they would do the movie for younger kids, just to get more audience and am so glad they didn't do that.

ok R RATED for a reason yes.
but some R RATED for Restricted. Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian.
An R-rated motion picture, in the view of the Rating Board, contains some adult material. An R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously

I have seen R RATED movies and have been able to fast forward during a section or two.

I personally didn't know this was rated when we thought about going

if you have any questions to why a movie is rated R, you can usually just ask the person who is working there why it is rate R, I've done this in my hometown before.

Well, I didn't know any of that... but, I have since talked to the DH about it, and, he explained the whole thing to me... I knew he had read the comic books of the Watchmen, but, I didn't know the story. So, I didn't know there was anything to 'dumb down'. Being an "R" rated movie, I would not take kids to it anyway... at least not until I saw it first.

He said they were adult comic books, and, they were really violent...

We're going to see the movie... he explained to me the whole deal with the Watchmen, and humans and stuff. It'll all make more sense once I've seen it.

Oh... Hippie said it was a novel... so, I assume it was both ?? A comic book series, and a novel ?

Its a Graphic Novel. Picture an ADULT really long comic.

MOVIE-WISE..... Alan Moore also wrote From Hell, Constantine, The Legue of Extraordinary Gentleman & V for Vendetta., All Graphic Novels, but if you've seen any of those movies, you'll realize those are not just "comics".

Ok...lol, I guess one mans 'graphic novel' is another mans 'comic book'... maybe a 'glorified comic book'... as in it was a continuing story.

LOL, it so really doesn't matter to me, I personally prefer non-fiction, but, I'm still gonna see it with the DH, it should be pretty good.

I understand your frustration and disappointment and do know that money doesn't grow on trees and you (like most of us) had probably invested a lot of money in your movie excursion. That said, why did you not just leave? No offense intended.

They usually refer to a very long story or a series as a graphic novel because the story arc is much longer (like a novel) than a regular comic book. Watchmen was originally a 12 book series and then later was bound together & published as a single book.

I am sure that i might get flamed for this, but be it as it may. I really do not see what the big deal is, boys have penis' and girls have vagina's to quote the movie "Kindergarten Cop". A friend of mine took his 6 and 8 yr boys to see it, they (the boys) did not even notice the sexual things, there where no snickers, nothing. They just really enjoyed it because of the cool "special effects". Our children today are so exposed to things, that i think that they would become numb to something like that in a movie these days. Personally I would much rather take my 10 year old to see that myself, so that if he does have any questions, we can discuss them. I dont hide sex from my son, i explain it too him, so that he will not be one of those kids that feels like its an aweful shameful thing and will hide things from me. He will probably end up seeing it at a friends house or something when it comes out on DVD anyways. I understand wanting to protect your children, but they can either see those things with you, or without you. I would rather it be with me..

Honestly, the sex parts of the movie weren't a big deal to me, I didn't think they were very graphic. If that's all that was in the movie I would let my DD watch it. (with me) I won't let her see it because of the violence.

well I guess everyone is different... I prefer my 8 yr old not watch sex scenes.. period.. and since I monitor where she goes.. and what she see's... thats how it will remain for a while... does that mean she doesn't know some facts of life? No, it means I prefer for her to talk with me about things.. and not watch strangers in a movie have sex.. that is my personal views.. and with these views.. I posted a warning for other parents that feel the same way.

If you don't feel the same way.. feel free to dismiss this thread.. and take your kids... your choice.. I just felt that if there were parent who were unaware of the content.. as I was.. they may want to know.

First of all you can't fastforward a movie in a theatre. Next you really should look into movies on Yahoo movies before you think about seeing them.

Rated R for strong graphic violence, sexuality, nudity and language.
