I was let go from my job almost 8 months ago (was there 19years 10months) and have been on unemployment since then. I look for jobs in the newspaper, internet and job service. Every place that I fill out an application and give them my resume, no one has called. Alot of the places are "NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE" so I really don't want to call and ask if they have look at my application.
My laywer suggested McDonald's and even they are not hiring. I know I'm not the only one and there is alot of us in the same boat. It's just very hard looking after almost 20 years at the same company.
Thanks for letting my whine.

just keep on keep on, hubby was laid off at the begining of the year last year and was put on unemployment also.he put in a million applications, called them to see if they recieved it ie. looking at him. He went through a agency and got a temp job (that never told him it was temp) and now he is without a job again, but he is closser to going active again...it is hard on him because he is a worker, doesn't like to sit on his but...but as I said he is CLOSSER to getting active so we are sitting here impatiently..Good things will come to those who wait... OR to those who keep at it with the applications (one or the other lol) You will find your job.

I would call them anyway. When my husband was trying to get a truck driving job he'd call and they wouldn't even have looked at the job application he filled out till he called. Thats how he finally got a job. I believe some companies take the applications and don't even look at them till you ask them if they did. I really hope you find something I'll pray that you do.

Is retirement at this company at 20 yrs? If so you can sue them for letting you go 2 months before retirement. I guess that is stupid for me to say because I am sure you know that.

Hugs to you, hope you find something soon. A close friend of ours was laid off this past week and his job, I thought, was the most secure out of most of our friends. It seems that even those lucky enough to keep our jobs, are loosing hours anyway. It is a scary time and we all just have to keep praying and staying as optimistic as we can muster. Best of luck to you.

welcome to my world -- no one is hiring ... and don't expect them to start hiring since O took office -- it's just not going to happen.
About all you can really do, is start your own "business" on the sly -- ebay this that and the other ... if you are crafty, make stuff and sell it on etsy.com
you can do like I did, and start making homemade products like lotions, soaps, lip balms, lip glosses, perfumes, etc....
you can also make blankets or do sewing etc.
it's tough out there.
You might want to check into Mystery Shopping (www.trendsource.com is the best one -- paying twice a month regularly) -- I do Kroger mystery shops for them, and schedule between 15 and 25 shops every month ... that pays for my gasoline and groceries for my family (which when you have no income, is better than nothing -- since you know you won't starve).

No I don't think so. There are other people that are still there that are 20 years up to 35 years. They let me go because of I was on workmans comp for about 6 mths and then the occ. health doctor said it wasn't work related. He said it was my thyroid causing my systems and told me to see my doctor. Well my regular doctor ran blood tests and it isn't my thyroid and told me to go back to the occ. health doctor, which then he put me on permanent restrictions. Then my ex-employer came back and said they can not accommodate me with the restrictions that the doctor put me on.:rules It was fine when it was under workers comp.

Sorry to say your world sucks!!! No wonder Noah put pairs in the ark. LOL
No I not that crafty, but I might try. I found a book called "weekend crafter" I will look and see what I can do. I give step by step instructions, shouldn't be to hard.
I will check out www.trendsource.com but since I live in a small town I don't think they have anything in my area, but you never know.
Thanks again for your help!!!

I agree, my world sucks...
on the flip side... NOW you have time to stop and admire God's handiwork -- like flowers in bloom (even if it is the flower shop or Lowe's).... how tall the trees are --- how much wildlife there is and "how they make it in this weather" etc.
You MUST and I repeat MUST find something LITTLE to take pleasure in, to smile for... because in this "world" it is so depressing you are in for a world of hurt if you dont.

It makes me mad how some doctors will say things to help companies out so they don't have to pay workmens comp. The same thing happened to a man where my husband used to work. He had to have back surgery and when he came back to work they wanted him to do things like pick up 100 pounds or more, climb ladders and things he couldn't do. And because he couldn't they let him go. Before the operation they were saying he could have his job back but after they changed their mind and told him to file for disability.

You might want to really check into the L&I in your state. In our state if you are injured on the job and the employer can not accomidate your restrictions, then they have to put you on timeloss which means they have to pay you your regular pay until they can accomidate the restrictions. I work at a Occupational Medicine clinic so we deal with this a lot. We have many patients get mad at us because their work can't accomodate. It's not between the clinic and the patient, it's between L&I and the company to come up with the solution for the care that the DR. gives.

Hope things get better. I would give whoever you applied for a call 1x and say, my name is ___ and I applied on so and so date, I was really intrested in the position and I was wondering if it was still available. Even if they say no phone calls in the ad, a polite inquiry is not inappropriate as long as it is done in a respectful way. On places where you mailed or emailed you resume, follow up with a letter thanking them for considering your resume and reiterate that you are still looking for work and that you are available to start right away should the position become available. I have gotten jobs doing this, even if the ad DID say no phone calls, it shows you are intrested. And how can it hurt? They havent called you back anyways.
I am unemployeed and hurting for $$$ as well, wishing you the best of luck, please keep us updated

Good luck to everyone job hunting. I was laid off in January for the 3rd time from the same company. I thought I had a future there. It's true you will go crazy if you don't find a hobby. I'm on unemployment right now and even that's not much.

The funny thing is I asked the nurse if she knows and thing about a case management nurse. She told me to ask the doctor and that was the same day he misdiagnosed me and refered me to my doctor. I was told by several people that doctors don't like case management nurse's. I don't know b/c I didn't have to deal with one.

We just ran an ad at the resort I work at. The 'No phone calls please' only means that you have to come in to apply so they can take a look at you. It really doesn't mean that you can't call in to follow up. I promise!

My thoughts go out to you and hope and pray that something breaks soon!
My hubby was laid off after "31" years on the 28th of Feb. He is now 53 with no education - what can you do but keep plugging away - it's scarey!!! Sure hope this economy picks up soon - can't imagine how much lower it can go - don't want to! We are a single income family and I haven't worked in over 20 years, don't drive, live in a rural community and am not in great physical health - I have been trying to find something 'legit' to do online but haven't found anything that doesn't cost money to try, we can't afford to gamble on a maybe. Anyone know of anything???

I don't know where you work but your job should be accommodating you because you are on restrictions. At least that is how it works at my place of employment. If you can't work at your present position they are supposed to find you something suitable at the company that you can do. If they can't, you should be on workmen's compensation until you are able to fully function. I don't understand why your lawyer isn't helping you more with this. If you can't return to work you should be looking into long term disability with your job. Is your present lawyer a workmen's comp lawyer?

Once it was determined that it was not a Workman's Comp. medical problem the employer has no obligation to keep you employed. They can let you go while you are still on workman's comp if they are laying off people. We had to do this with one of our former employees and it is legal. Now with that being said those laws do vary state to state so she really needs to get a lawyer that knows workman's comp for that state. Either way I hope that your Dr. finds what the problem is and hopefully you will get well.

If you're worried about bothering the places with phone calls, you could drop them a short note in the mail. I read in the paper that a note is a good way to go. And then a thank you after an interview. It sets you apart from the rest. Just a quick simple note, stating when you sent in the application, your name and phone number, and how you hope to hear from them soon.
Good luck, and keep your chin up. And go buy stamps before the dang PO raises the prices, AGAIN. grrr

Who can say any job is secure anymore? I just dont get it all these companies making cutbacks, employees getting less pay but still have a job, business closing so all those people are out of jobs or companies taking away pensions/retirements because they go bankrupt or whatever. So all these hard working people all these years have to try and find ways to make ends meet. Investments have gone down the tubes so what are they going to do. The people that (some people I better make that clear) keep having babies that cant support them but they get more assistance--groceries,rent,medical etc where are their cutbacks! Example people like Octa mom.

I was told by several people that doctors don't like case management nurse's. I don't know b/c I didn't have to deal with one. When Sweetie hurt his back on the job, ( a few years ago), there was a nurse that went to every doctors appointment with us. She went in the room with us and get a copy of the medical report, from the doctor right then and there. She was the one that told his job that he was a diabetic. She told the job the he could not go to work and go to PT too. Sweetie was out of work for almost a year. Some companies don't like to use care management nurses, cause they they have to pay them, and they tell the companies what is needed for the employee to continue working there. they are nice to have cause they really help the employee. GOOD lUCK, to all seeking employment!!!!!

I am really sorry this has happened to you.
You know I say to my DH all the time, how are people suppose to live now a days?? Everyone is loosing jobs, cant pay their mortgage/rent, cant buy groceries, and I am sure everyone stress level is sky high because no one even has the money to do anything at all fun related.
Hun, may a suggest baby sitting? I know it might be hard but where I live its a small, small town and I could not find a job ANYHERE even McDoalds, so I put a babysitting sign up at my local grocery store and gas station and now I baby sit 3 kids 50 hours a week.
I really wish you luck. PM me if you need help with anything.
Hugs.
Also: for those needing online jobs, WAH jobs, check out ChaCha.com and go to the hiring section. You make your own hours, work when you want. I have been a ChaCha guide for about 8 months now. I make around 100$ a week, some make up to 250$ a week.
Any questions, let me know :)

well i can definitely feel for you, however my problem is just the opposite. I'm working for 5 different places, just that none of them pay enough to be able to make it without the other one. I work full time for EMS.. part time for dispatch, part time for emergency management, and as needed for a 2nd EMS service and a temp agency working as a factory nurse. Its been so bad lately that i'm working all the time... I had to turn down a day at the factory just to be able to spend time with my son. I just wish one or 2 paid enough that I could afford to quit the others.
Please know that you and your family are in my prayers.

I was under the impression that the no calls means that you need to go to the business to get an application, you cant call and talk to them about it filling out application. But you can call and ask if they have had a chance to look over your application. I have heard that many companies don't even look at an application until someone calls and asks if it has been reviewed.
I was also going to suggest babysitting. Many people can't afford a daycare center so maybe offer to babysit less then daycare centers around your area, call them and ask their prices.
Good luck
