IN the past few weeks here in central Iowa there have been ALOT of house fires. And a few deadly ones. So it got me to thinking what would I go for if I only have a few seconds/minutes to do so. I think first off my pets. Then my purse and pictures depending on where the fire is. Then I would try to get to our lockboxes (even tho. they are supposed to be fireproof) because they contain all our important documents.
What would you go for?

My cats first, no ifs ands or buts. I can replace my license and my other important papers are in a fire-proof box.

First off, no question would be the people in the house, my son and SO, then would be my cat and dog. Anything else I can replace.

My kids and DH. If I passed my purse on the way out I'd grab it.
There was a house fire here last weekend. The mom died. One of the boys was sent to a burn center, but later died. Two children and the dad survived. The neighbors heard the mom screaming. She had gotten in the bathtub to try to survive. Where was dad? Outside with a garden hose trying to put out the fire. I am sorry. But to me, saving ;your family is more important than trying to put out the fire.

Beside people, I would grab my purse and my PC tower. My important papers are in a locked box, worked really well, when our house burned in '83. But my tower has my life in it, all my pix have been scanned, my sons school awards and school work from 20+ years ago etc etc.

From my file cabinet I would grab my wills, etc. I would also grab my files from the kitchen, checkbook and purse. Let's put it this way; I HOPE that I would have the wherewithal to grab those things!

Definitely my kids, not really sure what else - as long as my kids are safe, that's all that would matter.
We've had a house fire, and the first thing I did was yell fire (the kids were sleeping and I had just gotten out of the shower when I noticed the smoke coming from the kitchen) which my kids woke right up to and we booked it out of the house. I grabbed my purse which was on the stand next to the front door and the cell phone to call 911. Thankfully the damage was contained to mainly the kitchen and one of the upstairs bedrooms.

My family first of course. I have a folder of important papers in the front of my file cabinet and I'm with Hippie on the computer tower, EVERYTHING is on it.

For those that condemn what 1 person would do over another. NEVER say what you would or wouldn't do - until you are in their shoes

In Nov, the other side of our duplex caught fire. Of course humans and pets. I thought about grabbing my computer (and should have, it was fried) but only grabbed my purse and a scrap book that was an easy grab.

first family and pets...
secondly: all 3 picture frames -- 1913 maternal grandparents wedding day, 1850 picture of my paternal grandpa as a baby with his siblings and his parents, 1950 wedding picture of my parents.
already have our important papers in a safety deposit box at the credit union.
IF I had time, I would also grab my Mom's two jewelry boxes.

Once I got the kids and husband (with a pet each)......
I would like to think I would grab our college degrees and our son's diploma....
But in honesty: if i had my children, husband and pets: no regrets at all!

my pets, I have pictures on a external hard drive, so that, I am trying to scan all my pictures and put them on some dvds to leave at family houses. I keep dreaming on my house burning, I hope not. I don't even have a purse. I keep my license in the car hiden.

well as ya'll all know, speaking from experience here, MY KIDS... what you can grab depends on where the fire starts and how much smoke is in the house.. so my bag i carry to work that had my wallet and such in it that always sits by the front door, and a suitcase that had some of my son's clothes from when he went to branson with my mom... that was all i manged to get out besides outselves before the fire/heat/smoke got to be too much

Everything can be replaced but DH and I and the dogs. Just about every pic I have my mom or sister has too. So I could always get copies. We have stickers on the doors just in case were not home and theres a fire. PLEASE SAVE OUR 3 DOGS!! If its night-time I better grab some clothes lol.
It would be hard but we could start over as long as we have each other.

I pray to God I never have to make the choices of what to take, but I would get my family and any other persons, then if I could my purse and my photo box, but I have all the memories in my mind and some stored online so I would not worry to much about anything other than the lives.

If I am fortunate enough, my kids, my dh, and pets. I would love to be able to grab pics, papers etc, but would be so upset, that all I could think about would be the kids and pets. I know there is NOTHING in my house that is worth getting. If it isn't an air breathing thing, it stays.
As for the man that tried to put his fire out with a water hose. I am sure he was doing it to try to put the fire out so his family could get out. I can' imagine him trying to put it out to keep it from getting damaged. I really feel for him. I just hope people learned never ever get in a bathtub full of water. It WILL boil you to death. It seems like a good idea but it really isn't.
