If you knew someone that lied and claimed someones children on thier taxes just to get EIC and Child Tax Credit, would you turn them in?

IMO that is worse than not reporting some income. You are collecting someone elses hard earned tax dollars. I'd even say stealing it.

On one hand you obviously know the person. Maybe they are even friends of yours. And you don't want to get a friend in trouble.
But on the other hand its wrong to cheat and steal. And you are obligated, even sworn to turn in any fraud you know of. It could mean your job if you didn't.

Noone will ever know you are the one that turned them in. They don't release that info. And you get a reward for turning them in.

What would you do?

I would turn them in. I hate cheaters. I have turned neighbors in for harboring illegals, defrauding welfare, turned my ex in for medicaid fraud. The only person I can see not turning in would be my Mom, thank God she is the one that taught me my moral code.

Probably not regarding taxes. I know alot of people that give their kids to people at tax time because they don't work or have alot of kids.

I would want to turn them in but it would depend on who it is and if they would think I was the one that turned them in and the ramifications of that. So maybe depending on who.

Oh yea, I can't stand people who cheat the system, in fact, they thrive on it ! We ALL pay for that... how could anyone think that it's fair to everyone/anyone else ? That's not a little white lie, that's fraud, a felony.

Only if the kids didnt live with them for at least half of the year.

Kids don't live with them at all. The Mother is on welfare and is already cheating the system. Living in free housing, and yes Daddy lives there too and doesn't work. Collecting benefits and no one knows Daddy is there. Refuses to file for child support, and is popping kids out left and right. She called me asking for my opinion. The person wanting to claim the kids offered her $1,000 to do it. I told her I wouldn't do it! If you get caught your going to be in trouble.

I've been really thinking hard about this. Kinda upsets me that she put me in this spot. She knows I want to work at the IRS. And she knows I could lose my job for knowing and not saying anything.

This was my first poll lol. I'm so glad I did it. Thanks everyone!

LOL! Sounds like my neighbors... Daddy just lays around the house and sucks teh welfare checks and food stamps... perfectly able to work, but, work gets in the way of his social life, and, he couldn't play video games all day. Mommy doesn't work either... but, they did move in two other people to pay the utilities. *gag*

Anyways, as you can see, most here would chose to be honest, upright, and do the right thing. Like I stated before... we all pay for that. Many families make it a career to cheat the system. I'm sure the person claiming the kids is giving Mommy a nice big chunk of the cash.

I say as long as they are not breaking the law, sure. Once I know they are defrauding the govt - basically stealling my money all bets are off.
This is yet another reason why our taxes continue to increase. I would turn in illegals, tax cheats & welfare scammers in a heartbeat!

Don't you have to put SS# down for every member of the household getting social services? I would be afraid that they would cross-check the numbers and get busted for it. Sorry, a $1000 would not be worth it to me.

I'd report her to DSS. I despise people who think they can have a free ride because they exist. You should tell her you'll report her dumba$$ to the IRS. I'm sure there's a vacant cell for her in her state for fraud.

yes i would turn them in-if i knew for a fact that they cheated! if someone told me they cheated-no i wouldnt-i would have to have the proof in front of my face, before i would ever turn someone in.

DH's mom is a total piece of you-know-what. She had her son's (not DH) kids living with her, and since he did not claim taxes, she always claimed the kids. One year, her daughter was pregnant, jobless and broke and she let her claim one of the three.

I did not report her at the time, because I was young and stupid.

What if they are abusing a child?
Sexually molesting someone?

If they are defrauding the government, which is supposed to be by the people for the people, they are in essence defrauding you. No matter how small or large a crime is, it affects everyone. People who pay for things in a store pay more to offset the costs of a thief. People who pay their taxes get ripped off by people who cheat the system.

Cheating is cheating, and while you may not have a legal obligation to report a crime, the moral one is what defines us. I keep hearing over and over when something happens that it is too bad no-one reported something. In order to change things we have to decide to become involved.

People don't want to get involved it takes time and a lil effort on their part.

If they are getting medicaid , wic, foodstamps, etc., in those childrens names, if someone else claims them, they can lose those benefits. I am currently having my last years federal ammended, because my granddaughters other grandparents claimed her. Because she gets wic and state health, there will be investigations on both sides. I did not know they had done it till I mentioned filing ours to the dad. It still pisses me off
