A Longview woman who has allegedly been giving her baby beer slugged a police sergeant when officers tried to take the infant from her arms Monday afternoon, police said.
Officers said Jennifer Lee Hedgecock was intoxicated at the time.
Police were on scene to assist with evacuation while Longview firefighters were putting out an apartment fire in the 1200 block of 11th Avenue. They told Hedgecock they wanted the baby girl taken to St. John Medical Center to be examined for smoke inhalation.
Hedgecock objected by screaming profanities and slugging Sgt. Robert Huhta twice near his left eye, the report said.
Witnesses told police that Hedgecock, 39, has been consistently drunk since moving in about two months ago. They said they have seen Hedgecock giving her 6-month-old daughter beer in her bottle or straight from the can. When the baby is asleep, Hedgecock often leaves her unattended, they said.
Fire officials said the smoky blaze, which was quickly extinguished, started in Hedgecock’s apartment. The cause could not be determined but there is no evidence it was intentional, the report said.
Witnesses said Hedgecock left her room 30 minutes before the fire and during the evacuation was found in another apartment, drunk and unable to comprehend the building was on fire. She told police her daughter was in the hallway outside her apartment. Police did not see any kind of crib or bassinet in her apartment.
Hedgecock was booked in lieu of $25,000 on suspicion of third-degree assault and obstructing an officer.
A Child Protective Services worker responded to St. John to take charge of the baby.
