RUBIDOUX, Calif. -- A Rubidoux man was attacked and killed Friday by his family's two pit bulls, a sheriff's sergeant said.

The attack was reported at 12:10 p.m., according to sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez.

"It appears at this time it is a very tragic accident," Gutierrez said. "Of course this family is very distraught, right before the holidays."

About noon, the grandfather of the house, located at 5787 Kenwood Place, stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. The animals attacked the man unprovoked.

One relative was home at the time of the attack and was unable to stop the dogs. The man died inside the home before paramedics could render any aid.

The dogs were captured and will be euthanized, Gutierrez said.

These stories seem to happen more and more.Anytime I see a loose dog(We do have leash laws)it makes me so mad because I am always petrified that we are going to get attacked.

The neighbors at our new house to be has a boxer and a pit that run loose. They do not have a fenced in yard, nor are the dogs tied up. We are having a stockade fence put up before we even move in. I will see those dogs in my yard ONE time and I will be calling the dog catcher...PERIOD! I am not against pitbulls but I think they deserve responsible owners and obviously these people aren't. We not only have 3 dogs but we also have a small child. Scares me to pieces.
My heart breaks for this family. So tragic.

My SS and his wife have a pit bull and they had a baby in July. They say the dog is great with the baby but it scares me. Can't do anything though, it's their decision.

I would never take a chance of having a dog like that around my baby. Those dogs could be fine for years and years and then just turn on someone for no reason. Someone will come along and say that it's not only the pit bulls but other dogs as well but it's a much higher rate when it comes to pit bulls. How many people have been killed by a poodle attacking them?
