ROMULUS, Mich. -- A 13-year-old Romulus boy was flown to the Ann Arbor Medical Center after he was burned Friday afternoon while lighting leaves on fire.
The Romulus fire chief said the boy was pouring gasoline on leaves that were in a 55-gallon drum that was converted into a grill in his back yard when the gas vapors ignited and the fire erupted.
The Romulus chief said the boy was conscious when they arrived, but he had third-degree burns to 50 percent of his body, mainly his neck and chest.
Witnesses said the boy's father was with him while he was burning the leaves.
"He (the victim's father) pulled it up by the side of the house, and I guess the kid was going to pour more gas on it to burn more leaves. He lit it and it exploded on his face and got it on his face, chest, hands and back of his head," said witness Nick Diovardi. "His father got burned on his hand."
Leaf burning is illegal in the city of Romulus.
Neighbors said they heard a loud explosion, which sounded like a bomb.
"It sounded like all the windows came out of my truck," said neighbor Tom Redman.
Redman said when he came out his home he saw the boy severely burned.
They reported on the news last night that the FATHER was the one pouring the gasoline onto the grill, and when the vapors exploded it threw the boy against the side of the garage!
WTF was that Father thinking??? Oh wait, neither one of them had much of brain to start with.
