BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Tech police are investigating reports of possible gunshots and have locked down a residential hall.
A university spokesman, Mark Owczarski, says two people reported hearing gunfire Thursday afternoon, but it could have been sounds from a nearby construction site. There are no reports of injuries.
Virginia Tech officials are searching every room of Pritchard Hall, a dorm on the Blacksburg campus that is home to 1,000 students. No one is being allowed in or out of the building, but the entire campus has not been locked down.
In 2007, 32 people were killed by a gunman on campus who later killed himself.
The following news release was sent by Virginia Tech at 1:50 p.m. Thursday:
Virginia Tech PD and Blacksburg PD are investigating reported sounds of gunshots in Pritchard Hall. Building is secured. No access in or out.
Police are searching room by room. Two people reported hearing sounds like gunfire at about 1 pm. There has been no confirmation.
Police have walked the halls and report NO residual smell of gunpowder.
This residence hall is directly across the street from a construction site, which could be the source of the sounds. Click here for the Virginia Tech website.
