DETROIT -- On Thursday, a medical examiner will perform an autopsy on a Farwell Middle School student who collapsed and died while sitting in class.
Detroit Public Schools spokesman Steve Wasko said the 13-year-old student fell out of his chair in class at about 9 a.m. on Wednesday. A school nurse attempted CPR on the boy, but he remained unresponsive.
O'Shea Martin was transported to Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 10:20 a.m.
Medical officials said Martin had a seizure in the classroom, but he did not have any prior medical conditions.
Martin's classmates were devastated by the news of his death and were talking about it online.
One person posted a comment saying, "Lord why you have to take my little bro away from me?"
One teenage girl told Local 4 she knows Martin's mom must be hurting badly and she is too.
"He was a nice boy and didn't disrespect females. I am going to miss him dearly," she said.
Grief counselors will be at the school this week to work with the students. School officials will continue to work with the family and medical officials to find out why the boy died.
