Joe? Where did you go? Posted: Thursday, October 30, 2008 12:08 PM by Mark Murray

DEFIANCE, Ohio -- "Where is Joe? Is Joe here with us today?"

That's the question John McCain asked roughly 6,000 people at Defiance Junior High School here this morning, But the correct answer was no -- Joe the Plumber was nowhere to be found.

There are conflicting reports about where or when or if Joe will appear with McCain at some point during his two-day bus tour of Ohio, but the candidate clearly thought that he was meeting him here in Defiance, the first stop on the tour.

While riffing on a common line from his stump speech about Obama's desire to "spread the wealth," McCain confidently proclaimed, "Joe's with us today. Joe where are ya? Where is Joe? Is Joe here with us today? Joe, I thought you were here today."

Then the senator covered up for Joe's absence by saying, "All right, well you're all Joe the Plumber. So all of ya stand up ,and say I thank you." McCain went on to say that he had seen Joe on TV this morning, and he asked the crowd to "give him a round of applause for what he's done for America.

McCain also hit Obama on some comments he made to ABC's Charlie Gibson last night when asked if he had thought about what he would do after November 4th if he lost. "Last night, Sen. Obama said that if he lost he would return to the Senate and try again in four years with a second act. That sounds like a great idea to me. Let's help him make it happen."

But Obama didn't tell Gibson that he'd make another White House run; he said he looked forward returning to the Senate and working with the next president and Congress.

"Look," Obama said, "when I started this campaign we were the longest of long shots, and Michelle and I were extraordinarily happy before I started running. And I'm a relatively young man. Ya know, they say there are no second acts in politics, but I think there are enough exceptions out there, that I could envision returning to the Senate and just doing some terrific work with the next President and next Congress."

A local school district official confirmed after the event that of the 6,000 people estimated by the fire marshal to be in attendance this morning, more than 4,000 were bused in from schools in the area. The entire 2,500-student Defiance School District was in attendance, the official said, in addition to at least three other schools from neighboring districts, one of which sent 14 buses

He's probably tired of all the flack he's got from asking Obama a simple question. I know I would be. He's been a lot nicer than I would have been if I had been in that situation.

He should have said something like "Well, Joe being "Joe the Plumber" is probably off to work right now".
It would have made more sense than "you all are Joe the Plumber". Actually, I'd be willing to bet that more than the majority of them have to hire "Joe the Plumber" to fix the problems.

McCain recovered nicely, I saw & liked the speech but then again. McCain isn't trying to spread my wealth to others who I shouldn't have to support.

I agree. That's insulting to me because unlike Joe, I pay my taxes.

WHO?

The point she was making is that "Joe" owes. She wasn't talking about ACORN.

Oh good God people. I watched the speech, McCain was told that Joe would be A the rally,he called out for Joe but was later told that Joe was to be at a later rally in the day, not the morning one.

This crap is important why? I don't get why this little petty stuff is what is in the news. Big whooping deal.

And, how would ANY of you feel about your entire life being dug up because you decided to ask a simple question and it landed in the news? Who of you have perfect credit? Who of you have made mistakes in your past or fallen on hard times? I just don't get why this poor average Joe is getting all of this undeserved negative attention.

****** As you can see Samuel " Joe the Plunber" isn't complaning *****

AP Entertainment Writer John Gerome, Ap Entertainment Writer – 1 hr 47 mins ago AP – Samuel 'Joe The Plumber' Wurzelbacher speaks at a rally for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John … NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Like all good celebrities, Joe the Plumber has hired a publicity team.

The Press Office in Nashville, where clients include rockers Grand Funk Railroad and Eddie Money, will help him handle the flood of interview and appearance requests that have poured in since he was mentioned during a presidential debate and quickly became a household name.

"It's like any other celebrity who is in the public eye," said Jim Della Croce, who owns the agency. "There needs to be someone acting as a clearinghouse and interpreting the opportunities and coordinating the media requests, and he truly is being inundated."

Joe the Plumber, whose real name is Samuel J. "Joe" Wurzelbacher, 34, of Ohio, gained national attention when Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama told him during a campaign stop that he wanted to "spread the wealth around."

Their exchange about Obama's tax plan aired countless times on cable news programs. Republican nominee John McCain repeatedly cited Joe the Plumber in a debate.

Wurzelbacher campaigned for the Republican ticket on his own bus tour around Ohio this week and appeared with Sarah Palin on Wednesday. His name comes up at just about every GOP rally.

But with the election next week, what's next?

A lot of things are too premature to talk about, Della Croce said, but a book is already planned.

So many, apparently, that he needs three managers at The Press Office, among them country singer Aaron Tippin. Wurzelbacher met Tippin, also a McCain supporter, when they appeared on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's Fox News talk show.

The media scrutiny hasn't always been kind to Wurzelbacher, who turned out to be an unlicensed plumber with unpaid back taxes.

At first, Wurzelbacher insisted he wanted no part of the spotlight and predicted he'd be a small footnote in the campaign.

Well, the McCain/Palin campaign camp wanted more from him by putting him in the spotlight, and as you can see he's enjoying the spotlight.
