A friend sent this to me. I don't know if he wrote this or just sent it to me but it's worth while reading.
Read this slowly. Let it sink in. Quietly we go. Sheep to slaughter.
Absolutely The Funniest Joke Ever !
. . . ON US
Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY during the Carter Administration? Anybody? Anything? No?
Didn't think so.
Bottom line . . we've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember.
Ready? It was very simple, and at the time everybody thought it very appropriate.
The Department of Energy was instituted 8-04-1977 TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL. HEY, PRETTY EFFICIENT, HUH?
AND NOW IT'S 2008, 31 YEARS LATER, AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS NECESSARY DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR, THEY HAVE 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES, AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES AND LOOK AT THE JOB THEY HAVE DONE! THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY 'WHAT WAS I THINKING?'
Ah yes, good ole beauocracy. And now we are going to turn the Banking system over to them? God Help us.
Why do people want more government?

Does anyone remember why it was so important at the time? Because there was rationing of gas. 2 gallons was all you could get.
The middle east was ticked at Mr. Peacemaker, so they cut off the supply.

Government programs breeds more government programs. Ya would have thought the solution would have been found by now but then what would all the government workers do without a job they just eliminated?
The free market does not get bogged down like that. Preform or close up. Your customers will go elsewhere.

Why do people want more government?Hmmmmm let me see...interesting...I was one when this department was created.....so I don't know what they were thinking. Hmmmmm. It looks they do a little more than you describe...
The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department of the United States government responsible for energy policy and nuclear safety. Its responsibilities include the nation's nuclear weapons program, nuclear reactor production for the United States Navy, energy conservation, energy-related research, radioactive waste disposal, and domestic energy production. DOE also sponsors more basic and applied scientific research than any other US federal agency; most of this is funded through its system of United States Department of Energy National Laboratories.

Government loves to tax us to death and then spend more than they should, I guess it might keep a lot of politicians relatives in jobs.

Have they lessen our dependence one iota?
That is why they were created in the first place but they didn't or they won't do what they were suppose to do in the first place. Why? Don't you want to know the answer to that? I sure do.
We are now FORCED into paying $24.2 BILLION A YEAR for their budget.
When did they institute this part of their responsibilities?

You call 'lessening our dependence on foreign oil' an easy task? If it's so easy to fix, why haven't they done it yet?
I should look up to see how many billions & billions we have sent them to fix this easy task since their beginning but it would be useless to try to get a few of you to comprehend the message of wasteful spending on our part of being taxpayers.
I see you were only a one year old baby when this agency was brought in. I wasn't sure when they stopped teaching kids how to not only read but understand what they read but I can see where it was as little as 32 years ago. Now don't go taking that personally as you are going to see the failings of the school systems as you age too & you will start wondering when things have gotten worse too.

You know if our men & women were hired by a private firm they would be making a whole lot more money then they are with them working for the guberment. They should be making the big money & having the great perks, retirement plans & healthcare. Not these idiots who decides what they should be used for.

I never said it was an easy task.
I said "No government agency has ONE simple task..they usually encompasses others too."
I was using a generality. I said government agency..not DOE specifically.
And you don't seem to be able to (in all your wisdom) look up what these government agencies actually do. You'd rather just take an email and post it not realizing that some one would actually check up on it for accuracy.

yes.. they were given authority over the Nuclear industry because it was a way to achieve what was given as their PRIMARY purpose which was to reduce our dependancy on foreign oil. Research into alternative energy sources ... wind, solar, geothermic, hydrogen, ect ect ect .... Seems that they have a huge buget and not much in the way of results. :hmmmm2:

Yeah and those pesky military guys too.
PESKY military guys? Without a strong military we are the worlds b**ch!
Military is not only essential it is also constitutionally provisioned. We shouldn't be upset about spending money on defense.
To the other, YNKY, you seem to be missing the main point the OP was making.
I don't think ANYONE really thinks any govt agency has only ONE responsibility.
Obama says that we will be for all intents and purposes "energy independent within 10 years"!!!!
WTF? How??? We don't have any magic pixy dust! We have spent 31 years putting money into a government entity that was supposed to be working on this already!!!
