Hello my son has this math paper and here is the question During the 5th grade camping trip nine students can sleep in each cabin. All boys and girls must sleep in each cabin. If there are 70 boys and 76 girls in the 5th grade how many cabins will they need to house all the students? I am thinking we need to divide each but not sure

IthinkNOT!

They will need 8 cabins for the boys and 9 cabins for the girls, for a total of 17 cabins.

doesn't it give examples in the book to show your son how to figure out his math problem? Any math course I've ever taken their were examples in the beginning of the chapter that will show him how IthinkNOT got to that answer, as just giving him the answer doesn't let him know how to figure it out and he'll need to know that for the test.

I agree, if you do his homework for him he really isn't going to learn anything. Helping him to figure out the problems and teaching him how to get the answers, and letting him do the work is what you should be doing.

Actually the lady's husband had been helping her child do their homework, she was only trying to verify they had the right answer. The reason you feel like crap is because you know that your not really helping your son by just giving him the answers.

To figure out the answer your son needs to divide the number of students (boys (70) & girls(76) by 9 (the number of students allowed in each cabin) then add the two numbers.

If there are 70 boys and 76 girls in the 5th grade how many cabins will they need to house all the students? I am thinking we need to divide each but not sure

IF I am reading it correctly:

9 kids to a cabin.....all boys and all girls(groups B and G)

70 boys(Group B)

76 girls(Group G)

To put 9 kids per cabin...you need to find out how many cabins you will need per group.

Group B has 70 kids....To find out how many cabins you need, divide 70(total boys) by 9(kids per cabin)

70 / 9 = 7.77777XXX which translates into 8 cabins for Group B

Group G has 76 kids....To find out how many cabins you need, divide 76(total girls) by 9(kids per cabin)

76 / 9 = 8.444444...... which translates into 9 cabins for the girls.

Group B needs 8 cabins
Group G needs 9 cabins

Total needed--->17 cabins

You can also lump the 70 and 76 together, divide by 9 and get 16.22222 which HAS to round up to 17 cabins, since nobody can sleep outside, BUT there will be other problems that wont work this way. If you dont follow the steps correctly, you will get the wrong answer part of the time, depending on the problem and ALL of the time if the teacher checks the work.

8 for boys but one will not be full and 9 for girls one will not be full for a total of 17

Please don't feel bad about asking a question.I have asked an algebra question before(not on this site).I had quite a few nice people that explained how to go about getting the answer.I never gave my son the answer though.Just tried to help him understand the steps he had to take to get the answer.
And yes,he was given examples by the teacher, but sometimes there's one they just need help on.I also didn't see where you were just going to give him the answer either. For all i know you were going to do the same i did.So again, please don't feel bad.:)

It's just that I worry if her son is learning anything, as much as she comes here to get you guys to answer the questions for him. I don't understand why they aren't showing/explaining the method to him at school, whether he has a book or not. If he (and you) and having that much trouble doing his homework, maybe you should contact the school about some tutoring or something.

As for the math..dude I have NO idea. I dread helping my kids with their schoolwork because I have zero brains when it comes to math. I can read the dictionary in one sitting, but give me a few algebra questions and BOOM instand migraine.

Good luck, I hope you can get some answers. Maybe you can go online to like www.funbrain.com with him to help with his math. My 5 year old is on there all the time doing the math arcade.

I wasn't trying to be rude, I was just saying that if you're asking for answers how will he learn. If he does not have a math book I bet they get worksheets, if they don't have worksheets then I'm pretty sure the teacher writes out examples on the board and provides step by steps instructions on how to figure it out, if they're doing this, your child should be copying it. If the teacher is not doing this, you need to contact the school. Also if math is a problem for your son or you'd like some help, maybe you can contact the teacher and ask about a workbook you can purchase for him that will help walk him through what they are teaching that gives examples so if he isn't sure and you're not sure, you'll both be able to refer to that. I also agree w/ Hippie, getting a tutor could be a great idea as well. I use to tutor and found that when the kids had someone willing to work them through the problems (not give them answers) they caught on quickly :)

Why oh why oh why doesnt she use the links I gave her over and over and over again and it shows how to do the problem outright step by step grrrrrrrr

Don't worry about what people say... once you determine the correct answer... dissect it and see how they came to the correct answer, kinda like reverse osmosis...lol

I can't believe someone is correcting your english on here ! I am a spelling and word buff, Scrabble tournament player (in REAL life, not online), english freak etc... I could correct the spelling and english of half the people here, but, I CHOOSE NOT TO. In fact, people have been warned in the past for doing so, told that it was rude... pointing out someone's intelligence, or lack thereof.

Some people's learning/reading comprehension skills are very poor. Some can't learn via reading at all.

You may have been playing around with her, but I doubt it was too funny to her.

I'm not jumping you... just making a point. That's why I didn't use your name when I wrote this. I corrected someone's spelling on here once, and I got 'jumped' for pages and pages. I had to remind myself that how someone spells (or isn't able to...lol), was really not my problem. In fact, I have a much harder time with people who don't pronunciate correctly. It just kills me !! I read things exactly as they are written, and without correct pronunciation, it's can actually 'hurt' to read it. It's a curse, trust me.

You know me of all people get frustrated when my DD brings home her homework and I sit here going umm I think I need to go back to school to learn how they are teaching you how do to this. She doesnt understand it I have gone to the school she is getting extra help in school and she will stay after for the help she needs.

Dont count on a board to help you kids with homework. it is great you are trying to help but there is a pattern here and it is only going to get worse. Get them the extra help they need. It doesnt make you a failure as a parent just makes you human.

Thanks to those of you that were helpful. But as I have said before I will not be joining in on conversations on here ever again. I put the math sites in my favorites.

A lot of times my child would bring home a sheet without the book. Sometimes I would need refreshing and the book would have helped. Something to look for on the sheets (that were on my child's anyway) was a page number in the lower left hand corner of the sheet that corresponded to the same lesson in the math book. I had them bring the book home every time after that just in case there were examples we may need.

If there is no book, then you need to google the key idea for many math sites to help you with it. You really need to familarize yourself with these sites as algebra comes all too soon and you (you in general) may need a refresher course as I did in some areas of it.

I didn't read all the responses, so if I repeated someone I apologize.
