MLGW cuts power to resident after $7,000 bill (http://www.wmctv.com/global/story.asp?s=8911641)

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Disabled MLGW customer Donna Barker found herself sitting in the dark recently after the utility turned off her power. Now, the two sides are fighting over her $7,000 utility bill.
Baker cried and held her granddaughter tight Wednesday as she contemplated her situation. Formerly a social worker at a local church, emphysema landed her Baker in critical care two years ago at Methodist Central.

"I was sick," she said. "I stayed in the hospital from March of 06 to 2007 in April."

Baker says no one lived in her house during her yearlong hospitalization, and said she is still trying to get back on her feet.
"I'd rather have a job and a payment plan than for somebody to pay my bills," Baker said.
But MLGW cut off her power in May for the hefty bill.
In a statement Wednesday, an MLGW spokesperson said the utility has been helping Baker for three years.

According to utility records, Baker has made just three payments since 2006. And, according to utility policy, Baker doesn't qualify for MLGW's Life Support program because she does not have any life support equipment in her home.

"I don't have any insurance," she said. "You have to have insurance for that."

To make matters worse, recent changes to TennCare eligibility rules caused her to be dropped from the rolls, so she does not meet the criteria to get equipment to breathe.

"We just hold each other's hands and cry. That's all we can do," Baker said.

MLGW says they've offered Baker a payment arrangement, and she still owes the money.

My bill isn't even $300 and they want to cut it off tomorrow. They don't care that my husband just had heart surgery and can't work or that the sister that I am supporting has Lupus and can't work.

Not long ago there was another woman on the news about not being able to pay her bill and they were fixing to disconnect it after non-payment for 6 or 7 months and a bill of a few thousand dollars.

This is total bull hockey. I don't understand how some people are allowed a break and others are told too bad, so sad.

Do you have a HEAP office in your city? If not, find out - though Soc Serv who handles that. Every state has a program, as these are federal funds. They can often cut the check the same day in cases of emergencies.

WRECC up here does not mess around. If your 8 days late they send a letter, 10 days they send a man to shut it off. it does boggle my mind though that somebody can go for sooo long and they not do anything, but everybody else has this little timer on them and they get X days behind and off it goes...

makes me sick. My MIL has bills in the thousands for gas and power yet I was cut off last week for $700 (I didn't know about this bill or how high it was, ex was supposed to pay the electricity). I did get electricity back after a very long day at citizens for citizens though..but I have no idea how some people get away with such a high bill and some get cut off the second they are late (I believe we were 2 months behind)
Thankfully my gas and electricity are now at $0 and I can start fresh..but some people don't have the luxury or the means to go to the town with 2 crying kids who need tv and lights.

My bill is 400.. it goes up every month..3 months ago it was only 179. Nothing has changed. I dont change the thermostat at all.. thats how much the increase is for the fuel adjustmant ( basically what they get charged for that naturral gas.. pass it on to us).

And they cut your stuff off EXACTLY 15 days after the due date..you have to pay full amount. It sucks. You have to have it and I dont see how most people pay it

Yep. And the water department in Russellville has a $500(yes, five HUNDRED dollars) reconnect fee if your water is disconnected for non-payment. Plus our water bills are horrible....mine is almost as much as my electric bill every month...right at $100.... so if you cant pay your $100 and it gets disconnected, they will come out, reconnect it and charge you $500. SO much of it has to be paid before they come back out and so much is added to your bill every month......yeah, I couldnt pay the $100 so adding $50-$75 a month helps me out! And, they have recently changed the way they figure your deposit......they run your credit, which is fine, but those with the worst credit have a $500 deposit. How on EARTH can people pay this? I know when my sister lived here 10 yrs ago, the deposit was $100, which seemed high at the time, but $500 is rediculous!

I am so sorry you have to del with this, I got that a year ago for $47.00, but my friend had a bill at $432.98 and still has and does her power, and I don't see how I got the threatening notice and she doesn't barely pay, and she never pays the agreement and she laughs about it, and then I read the OP and others experinces and feel just disgusted.
WTF?
Fingers crossed for you!

It sure seems that some people just skate through life ignoring the rules and others are held to a different standard. My DH's ex is one that skates and then the stupid companies call and try to make us pay her bills. I hope you get it straightened out and they give you more time.

that's not schit sherlock...

ours was shut off for non-payment of the full amount owing -- we paid them $277...but our full bill was $299.85.

So they shut off the power (gas and electric) for nonpayment of $22.85.

and we have NO back balance of any kind.

Our electric company allows three times a year that you can get a 30 day extention on a bill if you can't pay it on time. If a person is habitually late in paying, they can't qualify. If a person has a good payment record and they are halfway trying to make the payments they work with people.

The water utility division allows a 15 day grace period after the due date. If you can't pay by then, there's a disconnection notice with a 48 hour warning left on the door. Then if you can't pay, they disconnect and the bill has to be paid in full with cash-- and a $30 reconnect fee paid.

The phone company works great with people. As long as you call and make arrangement and pay when you say you will.

I haven't been forced to make arrangements with any of them in a very long time, but it's nice to know that if I had to, I could.

I wish it would be that way everywhere. Unfortunately, it isn't.
