I had lost my job in January, and received unemployment until June. At that time the unemployment ended, and Mr. Bushs emergency extension still isnt in effect yet for Kansas unemployment (at least not me yet). Anyway, 2 weeks ago, I finally found a job, and started working. The job is 11 pm to 7:30 am, about 20 miles away from my home at The Plaza in Kansas City.

Long story short, because of the 6 weeks from the end of my unemployment till I started working at Datacore, I am incredibly short on any money. Well, it still takes some money to go the roundtrip 40 miles per day to and from work. Today was a very desperate day. I am still 10 days from payday, and had enough gas to get to work and home on fumes. Nothing else. No food---but I solved that problem by going to a local food pantry. However, I called Social Services and explained the situation and asked if there were any programs in the area to help with a gas voucher to drive to and from work. She gave me a couple numbers--Salvation Army, which no one ever answered and United Services....which some dumb chick answered, I explained the situation, and before I barely finished she says---we dont help with gas or fuel till wintertime. Call back then!!!!!!!!!!! :getyou I had to explain AGAIN was that all I wanted was a way to get to work, not a way to heat my house!!!!!!!!! for her to tell me, oh no, theres no body that will help you with dat! Anyway, it got solved my best friend who is strapped to the gills himself putting gas in my car for the next week. I feel horrible letting him do it, knowing how much he sacrificed because of idiots who cant even seem to listen and direct you where to go or tell you what to do.

They're like that here,too.
The place I work for does a fund raiser for them once year. They want us to have $ taken out of out paychecks regularly for them. They always have somebody come and give a talk about how much they've done for them. It's always a real tear jerker. Well, the one time I called they gave me erroneous information and weren't too happy to help. So they get no sympathy from me. I know I look bad at work for not donating to them but tough.
Glad you found somebody to help.

Phew, at least gas isn't as expensive as it was earlier this summer and you found someone who would help you out.

Hi Belle,
My son also works on the plaza. He goes to school at UMKC and works as a waiter at night and on weekends. There have been many times when he walked to work because of low fuel funds. It's quite a walk in the winter time. But he needed the money for ramen noodles. lol. He's all maxed out with college loans, so he needs the job to have any money for food and necesseties. He's a good kid and we're very proud of him. We moved to the lake several years ago. I do miss the plaza at Christmas time though. It's so beautiful.

Wow.. so sorry. Its tough. My mom is almost blind and has to work 4 jobs and is still broke. She cant get disability or SSI until she is completely blind.. so she still drives, which is dangerous since she has severe night blindness. her cornea is shrinking and she needs a transplant.. but no insurance. go figure.
