Both my DH and myself are self employed. I have a contract with a company for work that goes for an entire yr. My DH however, works day to day. He didnt have any work lined up for the next few weeks and we were kind of freaking out. Last night he got a call from someone for work but they were not sure of the exact dates. About an hour later someone else calls him for work and they have exact dates they need him. He tells them that he has been asked to work at place #1 but because place #2 had exact dates, he talked to place #1 who told him that they would find someone else because they still didnt have firm dates to give him. DH calls back place #2 and its all set. They were supposed to call him today to give him specifics on the job but no call. So DH calls...only to find out that they decided that they were going to go with the first person they called who hadnt called them back at the time. They KNEW DH had to turn down work to go there. So now DH doesnt have any work again because place #1 had to call someone else in. I would tell DH never to accept work from #2 ever again but they pay the most. GRRRRRR
BTW-in his field thats the norm, well except for the screwing you over part. Usually places call to "reserve" you or "book" you. If you get a firm booking (solid dates), you go with it and the person who didnt have firm dates has to find someone else. And whomever accepts the booking first is supposed to get the job. #2 isnt playing by the rules.

yikes that sucks! With the economy the way it is, I don't think I could take a job where I didn't know where work was coming from... or really any time no matter what the economy was like. I just wouldn't feel comfortable wondering where the money was going to come from, I hope he's able to find something soon... I'd be freaking out as well. GL

Jeez that really does suck. And you yourself cant set up two places as a "just in case" because you'd be bailing out on one of them and wouldnt get called again!
Hope it all works out for you guys!

Oh wow, I am sorry that has happened!
I am curious what type of work do you and your hubby do? I would have send you a PM, but it seems to be disabled on your profile...

With the economy being as bad as it is I would be sending hubby down to McDonalds and Walmart and Burger King, nobody stays for free even if it isnt hubbys fault that they did him like that

She said they both work at home, are both self-employed which means that this happens sometimes. She's just venting about it.

I'm self employed too, but I do a different type of work. I have 1 steady client who I have a contract for weekly work, other work just comes in as my clients have it to send out.
DH does videography & gets a contract with firm 'pay by' dates. Is it possible for your DH to get something from them in writing the next time. Maybe draft a quick letter, fax it to them to sign & have them fax a copy back to him? This would at least make them think twice about trying to pull the job out from under him a second time.
Could he contact job #1 & let them know that he was able to open up a few days to do work for them?
I hope things work out.

Thanks everyone. My DH works very hard and gets paid very well. I am not upset that he is not working because right now is typically a slow time in his business. We are not hurting financially right now either.
mosdata1-Thanks for the advice about getting something in writting. Thats a great idea!!!!
It DID all work out. Last night he got a call from another place wanting to book him....starting TODAY and going thru the end of September! Some of it is out of state but thats okay. He will come back on weekends. :)

That's great news! I love the flexibility of being able to work from home, I'm sure you both do too.
