How much fun can one person have and still be able to stand!! About two weeks ago, sweetie went to the doc (and we'll use that term VERY loosely) because he has abscessed teeth (he wouldn't give him antibiotics for), his vision was going rapidly ('doc' says it was because it's summer time and he's drinking a lot more than usual...ummm huh?), I was concerned sweetie was diabetic so I sent him a list of things I wanted him tested for. Doc took exception to that and since I'm not a doctor myself (I just play one on tv hehe), then I didn't know know what I was talking about. He then (doc) stated that when sweetie had his hernia surgery in Feb. they did a fasting blood sugar then and it was normal. So therefore, he was not diabetic. He did NO test whatsoever.

Fast forward about a week. Vision is getting worse, he's drinking gallons of water and peeing all the night long. Very lethargic, not feeling good, staying in bed all day. This is not the man I met three years ago! So I told him to go to ER. He went....they did a CT scan thinking he possibly had a tumor in his brain. Thankfully, everything was fine there. He was released with a script for penicillin for the teeth and told to follow up with primary in a few days. They still didn't do a blood test or anything. I got him home about 1 am and decided I was going to check his blood sugar. And guess what I found. His reading was 556! I thought...ok, this is wrong...so I did it again. It was 540. I told him he needed to go back to ER. He fought me on it so i told him I'd look after in during the night and he was going in the morning no matter what. Got up in the am, took his sugar again, it was 386. Oh yeah, he also hasn't had hardly anything to eat in about a week and a half. No reason for it to be elevated.

The hospital admitted him and kept him over night. I have him home now, and he's feeling better, the readings are still high and they have him on oral meds now but he has an appt. for monday with a new doctor (my doctor actually) and will probably be put on insulin at that time. The reason he's not on it now is because the doctor wanted him to stay tonight and he wouldn't, so there was no way to monitor him.

In the meantime, now we both have a do a lifestyle change. And the kids are going to be checked as well. Kind of ticks me off that the older kids didn't take this too seriously!

Thats serious. I hope this doctor checks him out better than the other one did. I hope he gets the medicine he needs and can get his levels regulated.

Sorry that he has to go through all this. I'd run away fast from that doc and get him a new one. That's crazy! Just because his glucose was normal in February doesn't mean chit in July.

You'll be happy to know we're reporting the first 'doc' and taking it as far as we can. This man could have killed him! The new doctor is seeing him on Monday. He is also my doctor. And an endocrinologist, and also very well versed in diabetes management.

Awesome! you should not have to have a doc that is so careless with a human life that was obviously in need of a proper dx..

I'm glad to hear that he's going to actually see a decent doctor about it. How scary...no you may not be a doctor, but you still know when something isn't right.

There is a girl who's like another daughter to me and she had been not feeling well for awhile but her parents aren't very concerned with the well-being of their kids so they ignored it. She called her mom to come pick her up at school cuz she wasn't feeling well, mom smelled sweet breath, so called to schedule an appointment. They got her in later that day but by the time she got to the doctor and seen by him, she was slipping into a diabetic coma (they didn't know she was diabetic). She was transferred to a bigger hospital and was in the CCU for awhile and then finally got to come home. First thing her parents did was complain about how much money the medicines were costing them and how they didn't have the money to by the right kind of food, so I went out and bought a bunch...she is like my daughter...she lived with us for about a year. PIssed me off cuz her family ate the food that I bought for her (sorry but she needed it more than they did) and they don't do anything to make her keep it in check. I see her all the time and she's got a 20 ounce mountain dew in her hands, drinking it. I lecture her all the time, tell her how much she's loved and that she needs to keep on top of the diabetes...but her parents won't help with buying her the right kind of food. I just don't understand how some people can be so blase about it.

I hope they get your husband's sugar levels under control and the adjustment isn't too difficult for everyone.

Glad that you were persistent with your DH. There are a lot of Dr's that just don't want to do a blood test for Diabetes. Heck get a accu-chek it takes 5 seconds. You will have to make some changes but look at it this way - you will be living healthier and living longer because of those changes.

At 500+ he was in danger of going into a coma, if it ever gets that high again, get him into the Dr. If the Dr isnt open, take him to the ER, your talking life or death. Just being he is a diabetic does not mean insulin, diet might help and exercise to

Thank God you were able to check his sugar yourself.
You saved his life.

Weeee! He doesn't have to take insulin....at least at this point. Doctor put him on metformin and he's going back to see him in two week. His A1C was 13 which is darn high. He also went to see the optometrist to make sure there was no permanent damage---which there wasn't.

And he told the new doctor about this resident---doctor says, good thing she was around (meaning me hehe) and the resident needs much more training as he doesn't get it!

Sweetie is taking it easy this weekend, and yes, I think it's going to be an adjustment, espicially for him. I've made the decision that even though my diabetes is under control, that I am going to do the same things he is doing (which I should have done all along *blush*). This is not going to be pleasant I think.

Good for you! Some doctors don't deserve to be called a doctor. Glad you are getting things under control. I don't take any crap from any doctors anymore. I tell them I'm 54 years old and know my body better then anyone. My old doctor was all to happy to just give you drugs and not look for a cause. I really like my new doctor. He listens to me and asks what I think and best of all he lives right across the street from me! He and his family rent a large home. I never go over and bother him if I have a problem I make an appointment and go to his office.
