LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A 2-year-old boy is dead after being hit in the chest with a baseball bat.
Authorities confirmed the incident happened Tuesday night at a Springdale Community Church sporting event in Eastern Jefferson County.
Reports indicate the 2-year-old ran up on a sibling who was swinging a bat when he was struck.
Investigators aren't releasing any details on what led to the child's death or if any charges will be filed.
Preliminary reports indicate that the injury caused a heart arhythmia in the child. Onlookers attempted to perform CPR on the boy. An Harrods Creek EMS crew responded and took the boy to Kosair Children's Hospital, where he died.
"The child was inadvertently hit in the chest with a bat," said YMCA official Steve Tarver. "And that produced an interruption of the heart function."
A man who identified himself as a friend of the family called the WLKY newsroom and said donations can be made at any PNC bank to the Henry Berlin Memorial Fund.
He said the family doesn't want to speak to the media.
He would not answer any questions about the incident, only describing it as "an unbelievable accident."
