I sure in the heck the psych didnt use the words mentally retarded because if they did I think as a mom I wouldve blown a nutty. In this day in age there is a better way of saying it like your child has a learning disablity or is mentally handicaped. It wont be bad they have aids for kids and they are in with the rest of the kids I am sure she will be fine.

Yea the term mentally retarded is very outdated. I prefer mentally challenged. Other than someone at the school, has she been evaluated by any other professional? I am only asking because it might be helpful to get a thorough evaluation from a second professional. I am sure once she gets into the swing of things she will enjoy it. When my daughter was evaluated at 18 months of age, they deemed her to have global developmental delays, because she was behind in all areas. I just had to work with more and it helped me to learn patience, repetition helped alot. A little over a year ago,she was diagnosed as being on the low end of the autism spectrum. She will be 11 years old 6 June and she is an awesome kid that loves everything about life.

I agree.... you should get another opinion, and just find the area she needs more work and start the process... You should work with her as much as you can when and if she needs the help... Take it into your own hands...(()) keep us updated:)

There is a different way to say it - but LD is not it, I sub a lot in special ed. and oh shoot I don't even think LD is LD anymore EITHER - ?????
BD (behavior disorder) just changed as well & now is called ED. (emotionally disturbed)
I remember EMH is also OUT - that term is not to be used either.

Cognitively impaired is the term used in the textbooks from the course entitled "Teaching the Exceptional and Gifted Child" that I had in college a few years ago. It essentially is the updated term for mental retardation that is used in the educational field now.

"Cognitively impaired" is what they use at my DD's school now.

When I was in middle school they had one class that was for the kids that they referred to as being mentally retarded. These kids had down syndrome and some were referred to as mongoloids. I'm glad they don't use those words anymore to describe them but if it's referred to as a learning disability how do you differentiate between those that have something such as down syndrome and those that might just be a bit behind. I hope this is making sense.

They used 'mentally retarded' with my autistic nephew.. My sister freaked out but the doc kept that in the diagnosis file

'mentally retarded' is an accurate statement, although it isn't used much any longer.

I was just wondering how they classified it if they are going to put everyone in the same category. I can understand not wanting to use the term mentally retarded but the ones that are have more than just a learning disabilty. When I think of someone having a learning disability I think of someone who has ADD or dyslexia.

I guess they are all "Cognitively impaired" but the reasons for it are different...Down's Syndrome, ADHD etc.

That would make sense. Someone had posted and said that they refer to being mentally retarded as a learning disability so that's why I had all the questions. LOL

I didnt think that they shouldve said her DD was MR I think that is horrible to say to a parent thats like if your child is deformed telling the parent they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. I was just saying I think they shouldve said it a little more tactfully such as learning disablity ect. I know there is many differences but to say a child is mentally retarded in this day in age is wrong.
