A father went to a gas station in Catonsville preparing to take his wife to the hospital to give birth. It was there a man stabbed him to death in a botched robbery.

Mike Hellgren reports the victim's family is making an emotional plea for justice.

Claudia Sales dealt with bittersweet emotions as she held her newborn son. He was named after the father he'll never meet and the husband she lost to a brazen act of violence.

Carlos Santay-Carillo was pumping gas at Carroll Fuel on Baltimore National Pike, getting ready to take his wife Claudia to Howard County General Hospital to give birth, when a man grabbed him demanding money.

He broke free, but when the man caught him, he stabbed him over and over.

Carlos died at Shock Trauma. His son was born a few hours later.

"She's got a reason to keep on living and fighting knowing that there's this little person who's a part of Carlos," said Bertha Anderson, family spokesperson.

To protect the health of Claudia and the baby, her family waited to tell her she was a widow until after the Mother's Day birth.

"She is in shock. She can't believe it. She says this is not true, this did not happen, and she's crying," said Brenda, Claudia's friend. "She was worried the whole time that he wasn't there. She knew something was going on, but she didn't know what."

Investigators have few leads and say the robber did not take a thing.

"This was during daylight. It's a very brazen crime," said Cpl. Mike Hill with Baltimore County Police. "There's just no regard for human life whatsoever in this incident."

"If the guy's still out there, it could happen to anybody else. So why should we let that happen again, and again and again," said Anderson.

Carlos and Claudia came to Maryland last year from Guatemala. She worked as a housekeeper at the La Quinta Inn in Jessup. He worked at a nearby hotel and was so concerned about his wife, he even did some of her shifts during her pregnancy.

"Carlos was everything for her. Through their life together, they've gone through many ups and downs, but one of the biggest things was then having this baby together. It's their first baby," said Anderson.

Now their American dream of raising their family here together is shattered as this mother searches for justice.
