Man flees accident, leaves injured nephew behind

The Arizona Republic
A Chandler man crashed into a concrete wall on the Santan Freeway frontage road early Sunday morning, then left his 14-year-old nephew unconscious, seriously injured and bleeding in the back seat.

According to Chandler police, James Wesley Allen, 21, hit the concrete wall along the east side of Chandler Village Drive at 5:20 a.m. Both Allen and a cousin sitting in the front seat had been drinking. Allen's 14-year-old nephew was sleeping in the back seat. None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts, police said.

Allen fled the scene after the crash. His cousin had facial lacerations and a broken nose but was not hospitalized, police said. The 14-year old boy was not so lucky.

Without attempting to call for help, Allen left the accident scene and his unconscious nephew with a spinal fracture, skull fracture, brain bleeding, facial fractures and a scalp contusion, police said.

Police said Allen flagged down a female driver (WTF is wrong with a female driver picking up this guy all bloodied???? Is she nuts??? - there is a pic at the site) and asked to be driven to 56th Street and Chandler Boulevard, but did not tell her about the accident. When she dropped him off, the woman and employees of a nearby Bashas' warehouse called 911.

The 14-year-old was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn and listed in critical condition. According to police, it is unclear if the boy will survive his injuries. Allen was transported to the same hospital, treated for lacerations to his head and then arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident with an injury.
