Ok, yesterday, my daughter found a little min pini looking dog in our fenced in backyard. Apparently it came in under a little hole by the fence.
I knew it didn't belong to the people that lives beside us, so I thought maybe it belonged to the person behind us.. Well after taking a second to look at him, he has a BROKEN LEG! Very skinny too.... but I still went over last night to talk to the lady behind us. She tells me they have seen it the last few days wandering, with the broken leg.... she thinks someone dumped it... I can't believe someone would do that... I called the vets around here and everyone wants to be friggen paid up front to examine and fix him! ALSO. even though I found the dog, the shelters here still make you put it on the waiting list and I just can't take him to a place that would kill it....
I have no idea what to do besides put up signs in the subdivision and an add on Craigs list..
I would keep it (he is a beautiful little dog) but I know he has to get it fixed...
any advice?!

Maybe you could call the national organization of the humane society and ask if a vet or hospital in your area would treat the dog for free. I really don't know. I feel compassion that one of God's beautiful animals would be hurt and then dumped. ( I really hope that is not the way it happened) And God bless you for caring.

Geez, this is a long shot but is there a mini pin rescue somewhere near you?

Poor dog.

It is literally breaking my heart, my sister just told me to call the Austin college and see if they have a vet program and the class profess might fix it for demonstration with the class

Too bad your so far away, I'd have to come pick him up. I really couldn't afford to pay up front either. Maybe he adopted you, we had a cat that did that. Hope someone has an idea for you and he gets fixed up and gets a great home soon! If your like me, you'll get attached and have no choice but to keep him!

I really do want to keep him, I just want his leg to be looked at, you can tell the poor thing is broken and I can't stand these vets that go into the business to "help animals" when really it is to help their bank accounts:getyou
Just called UT and they don't have a vet center there:(

If you can't get any vet to do it pro bono, and maybe you could get a vet to help and let you pay it off little by little.

I was literally on the phone most of the morning begging.... I can always wait until hubby gets paid, I just don't want him to suffer... I would never ask them to do it for free, I don't mind paying, just have to little by little if it is a whole lot....

Oh thats terrible! I hope the rescue organization can help the little pup! If not, maybe the Humane Society. I just think it is awful there isnt one vet where you live that will go ahead and treat him and work something out with you. They know that a broken bone can cause deadly infections!

OMG, I did NOT know that..... I am waiting for the people from the rescue site to return my call.... the hotline makes you leave a message.... I am so worried.... He's so sweeeeet, he is curled in my lap right now..

It is because of the limited blood flow to the bone, try to keep him as still as possible, like on your lap or in a crate. Im thinking of you and the little pup hoping he gets treatment.

I have no idea how long the poor thing has been broken....
Is there any signs to look for?
right now you can tell it is not straight and where I think it broke at, it is swollen in a big knot

Is there anyway to contact the ASPCA? Report him as an abuse case let them know that you want to keep him, and see what they can offer I know they have vets working for them, atleast their site shows one that works with abuse cases. I'm not sure if that would help or not.

awww......poor baby. you are such a sweet heart for trying to help him. i am the same way. we almost got killed yesterday trying to get this dog out of the road.......took it to the home it belonged to and the owner acted as if we were bugging her......didn't say thanks....and just threw the little dog back into the unfenced yard. *****.

Vets do not go into the business to help animals any more than doctors going into the biz to help people. It's a business, after all. Having said that, there are some who will do the work on a sliding scale, but I'm not familiar w/ the vets in Austin.

A & M does vet work, but they are too far away. One of my co-workers took her beagle there for back surgery.

Do you have a call in program on the radio in your local area those people are usually very helpful.

Can you call vets in other towns beside the one you live in, sometime vets in smaller towns are more helpful.

Good luck to you and the pup and praying for both of you. Also bless you for trying to help the poor pup.

I'm heartbroken, he is gone now....
I called animal control to see if they knew anything I could do, she then tells me that in 3 days, I am the owner of the dog, and if I can't get it medical care, I could get in trouble for animal cruelty..WTF!
She left here a few minutes ago, he was trying (even with the broken leg) to climb the little cage to get to me... I told her that next friday I could take him to get everything fixed, but no vet would give me until then.
She said I could call the shelter and see if they would tell me how things are and "if" he would be adoptable, maybe I could be put for first..
I am seriously crying... How did I become so attatched in 1 day?

sunie
04-24-2008, 11:58 AM
(((lild))) It's easy to become attached even after one day. Unless there is something seriously wrong with him or has really bad attitude problems he'll be adoptable.

Do you know if your humane society lets people put holds on animals? The second he comes up for adoption, if they do, go down and put a hold on him.

something similar happened near my town and the story got to the newspaper and they did a big article on it and lots of people donated money to help
the girl who took the puppy with the medical bills.. is there a newspaper near you who might pick this up as a human interest story?

I know vets have to charge because it's where their income comes from but if I was one I could not turn away a sick or hurt animal because someone couldn't afford to pay. I hope you find a solution.

I did call, right after the lady left with him, and left my name and # on the recording.. she checked here to see if he had a chip, he didn't, but I am sure you have to wait like 30 days or something to make sure no one claims him.... the lady said there might be a claus or something to prevent me from adopting him... I am so upset with the way people are....... I am seriously heartbroken

Lild
04-24-2008, 12:42 PM
I got great news, just talked to the shelter he is at, and they said if no one claims him within 3 days, I CAN GET HIM... they will fully fix him, shots, leg, and neuter him, and chip him and I pay 85$ to adopt in our name...btw he is a Chihuahua

I hope all goes well for your new dog and his new family. Thank you for taking the time and energy to do what you have done. He is very smart to have found the one home in the neighborhood who would appreciate him and love him and to have let himself into his own new backyard! I say call him Einstein. A. Einstein.

could it be possible that it was someones dog and it either broke it's leg somehow, or some one did it for him and they put it into your yard not wanting the expense of having it taken care of? I was thinking of that today, and it wouldn't really suprise me with how people are now a days. I hope you get him, be sure to let us know.

I'm so glad your helping out this little guy. We have a dog which is identical to yours and she's is the cutest dog ever. They love to snuggle under blankets and be cuddled. I think he's a Chihuahua and minipin mix, just like ours.

Update-
He went up for adoption at 2:11 yesterday... I won't be able to pay the 85$ adoption fee until Friday, soooooo, If he is still there (and I am praying everyday) I will fill out the paperwork then...after that it will be a few days and he will come back here...
I am soooo excited but nervous at the same time. My kids keep asking when he will come back (they think he is at the Doctor, b/c they are just too young to really understand).
They aren't fixing his leg though, the vet there said it was an old break and he would need to see a specialist to get pins, she tried to assure me he wasn't in pain...he won't ever be able to jump on top of beds, etc like normal dogs, but I am fine with having to take care of him.
I am going to continue to call everyday, but this time it will be to see if anyone has tried to adopt him...
thanks for all the help, advice, and kind words:)

Yeah, waiting is horrible...

Honestly I can't imagine someone seeing that dog in the yard and not helping.. he is so sweet and cute... I just hope hope no one else adopts him. I never really thought much about cruelty to animanls, but after having him, my heart breaks thinking about how people can do something like that... I know it's jumping to conclusions thinking someone abused him, but I just don't know what else could have happend to him....
