View Full Version : I was offered a job today

And I am totally up in the air about what to do.
As most of you know, I absolutely HATE my job. The company policies are pretty much overboard, and they have even instituted a new rule about eating at your desk. And since they truly distrust the employees they are going to install cameras to ensure we aren't eating at our desks. Now, we have phone jobs, so not allowing us to eat at our desks is not a bad thing, no one wants to listen to someone chomp on food while they are talking (I'm sure some do that and that's why the rule was instated), but they refuse to give any one a raise because they can't afford it, which, incidentally, would keep those employees happy. Yet they can afford thousands of dollars for a security monitoring system, which will just make the employees more unhappy.
And I'm sure you're thinking that by the sounds of the place I should pack my bags and hit the road. Yet I hesitate...
The job I was offered does pay more, not much, but it is more. But it sounds like the most boring ass job I have ever heard of. My sole responsibility would be to call businesses and set appointments for the sales team to come out and discuss the companies products with them. I know I would find the job absolutely boring, but I also think that its very belittling to my job skills.
I want away from the company I currently work for badly, but I am afraid that I'll be leaving a job I hate for a job I'll hate equally. At least the job I have is a challenge to me mentally, and when we're busy the last thing I am is bored.
My hubby is trying to be supportive, but I think he wants me to take it because he knows how much I hate the place I work. He thinks that once they see me at work they'll be excited and move me to a more fitting position. I don't think they have a more fitting position available. He encouraged me to accept the job, but he said he is looking at it from the standpoint that its an "out" from where I am now. I just don't want to go there and find out I hate it as much as I think I will and then be stuck trying to find a new job all over again.

Im so sorry you have to face this. It is a case of the devil you know vs the devil you dont know and which do you want to deal with? I know I cant stand tedium and I would put up with alot as long as I didnt have to be bored.
Hope you make the decision that is right for you!
Forgot to add....I know how you feel about the cameras. My boss whines about money...no money, cant afford this, losing his shirt that....yadda yadda yadda....gonna put in cameras to deter shoplifters...Yeah, he put them in alright. In the back where WE ARE so he can sit in his office and check the monitor to make sure we are working. Then says the reason we cant have a raise is because I am not doing my job.....

I personally don't care about the cameras, to me its more of their bullying to try and threaten us into behaving so we don't lose our jobs. That is my biggest issue with the place is that they are constantly badgering and threatening in an implying manner that we won't have a job and this is the best gig in town so we'd better step up.
Good way to phrase it, the devil I know vs. the devil I don't. That is exactly how I feel. I do know one thing for sure. When my current job description was given to me I didn't hesitate, I know I would be busy and not hate the job itself. I don't feel that way about the job that was offered me.

I would go with your gut instinct about this "new" job. Sounds to me like you are going to be cold calling to places that don't necessarily want or need the products this company is offering...and you know how rude people can be, I wouldnt want that stress. I for one would probably stay with what I have until some thing I know for sure is better comes along, but that's just me.

No job is perfect and you need to decide for you which job is best for you right now.

I made sales calls from my home awhile back when I was preg.with my DS. I was paid under the table, I thought this will be great. I absolutly HATED it. Call after call to try to set up appt. for a financial advisor. I hated when I got a job done and then he'd call again with another page of phone calls.
Think twice if you really think you won't like it.

If you feel so strongly that you will hate the new job then I would hang on to your current job for awhile. Try, some how in down time, to look for something else. It's hard on your resume to be a "job hopper" and you don't want to leave a job you hate to another job you hate just for a little more money.
It's ultimatly your decision of course so go w/ your gut on your feelings.

I personally have never had a decent job that I like. Anytime I get an opportunity to make more money (The best job I ever had was $10 no benefits I absolutley hated it) I figure I might as well since I hated the job I had even if I hated the new one I would take it just to make a few bucks more. Plus every place I have ever worked is out of business now and when I knew they were starting to slow down I started looking. If I am going to be miserable I may as well get as much as I can. Maybe someday I can buy something that is actually new and not second hand then.

That is the absolute truth. Trust me I am one of those people you would call and I can cuss someone out and hang up on them so fast they don't know what hit them. Wait for something that is better. It might be a long wait but at least you won't have to listen to people cussing you out on a hourly basis. As for the cameras we have them in our office - I work for an electrician and his BIL is a partner with him in another business & we got the equipment for free. We always tell my boss that he wanted the cameras on so that he could see our cards when we all play hearts against each other on our server. Yeah we do goof off some but we do get our work done and I don't think they have been on in a long time - we do have some that are in the parking lot and our warehouse areas but the office one's have been off for a while. Just remember to smile & wave at the cameras every so often - makes them wonder what you are really up to.

Well, I called this morning and declined the job. While I hate my job, at least the customers are calling me, and its all small businesses. I cannot call people (or businesses). And while I'd be making more an hour wage wise, even after they are @$$holes and take half my commission I'll being home an extra $500+ this month on the commission I have left, which brings me to almost $2 more an hour than I was offered at this new place. And honestly, I don't care for the work, but its the company I have issues with, more than the work itself.
Not to mention.. if I quit where I am, even with a notice, it'll be 6 months before I can be re-hired. And I am 100% certain it would take me about 15 minutes to decide I hate the job so much I'd start looking for a new job. And it sure looks a lot better to have a job for a longer length of time and look for a new job than to have a job for no time at all and be looking.

You did the right thing, it is so hard to leave something that is familliar to you.
Jobs are hard to come by right now, you may as well hang on to one you don't like as long as you have some sequrity there.

well, there is no security where I am. But despite how much I hate it I can tolerate it. And I know that eventually a better job will come along.

I can't leave a job no matter how bad I hate it, I like stability.
