View Full Version : The other ball has dropped...dot and mass

As many of you may know my dot Tiffany has been cancer free from Leukemia for over 5 years now.

Last Saturday, March 1st we had to have an MRI done for part of her regular check ups and to map out her Neurofibromatosis.

Today the Oncologist called and said that Tiffany has a grape sized mass in her brain...in particular in the ventricle near the middle and to the back of the brain.

A neurologist/neurosurgeon is being consulted.

It is believed the mass may have been there for up to 5-6 years and we are just now finding out about this since her last MRI was done in 2002.

We return in 3 months to see if the mass is growing...if it isn't we continue to monitor every 6 months. If it does grow Tiffany will need surgery to remove the mass.

Currently the MRI is being evaluated to see exactly where it is and the oncologist believes it is in a "good" spot for removal. The Neurologist will know more.

IF the mass is of more concern we will see the neurologist rather sooner than later. Otherwise we currently wait.

Keep her in your prayers...

TIA

Sorry you have to go through this. She will be in my thoughts.I think I would prefer to see the neurologist sooner rather than later either way, just to hear their expert opinion. It is so horrible that kids have to go through things like this.

The last MRI from 2002 was clear.

However, the mass could have started anytime afterward to now.

I hope it turns out that they can go in & get it & she will be fine.

Believe me this is what we are praying for...

The hope from the Oncologist is that this mass is from the Neurofibromatosis that has nodules or small areas of perhaps 1-2mm growths on nerve endings that generally don't cause problems. It is the grape sized mass that concerns everyone.

If Tiffany had not had the history of Leukemia likely this MRI would never have been done unless problems occurred. The Oncologist hopes we found this early. If this mass ever grows and is removed the mass is likely benign...and has a good prognosis.

We told Tiffany, as the Oncologist wants her to track any headaches, or have teachers, school staff inform us if she ever has a fainting spell, seizure or any unusual behavior that is unexplained between now and the end of school in June. If this occurs it is an indicator of growth and cause of problems...She will be seen sooner.

I know some think that they should just do surgery and remove the mass...but because of the prior history she has and the known characteristics of Neurofibromatosis it may be better to wait.

The Neurologist should decide fully by the next few days.

Tiffany has also decided to have a few close friends come to the house on Wednesday of this week to have me tell them what is going on. That, at this time, not to worry but to try and help curb rumors, teasing and such that will likely occur once the news becomes common knowledge at school. Tiffany needs the support of friends too. Remember in High School anything different, odd or strange spreads like wildfire.

My thoughts and prayers are with your daughter. My daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer when she was 12. She had two surgeries to remove the tumor and is now 25 and doing great. She has even been off of her seizure meds for 2 years now so POSITIVE thoughts heading your way!

I understand the stress of waiting and watching. We have done that for 13 yrs and it doesn't get any easier. Her cancer was a slow growing one and they said it was better to wait and see than the risk that it would run by trying to remove everything.

In my prayers also. When my son was three he had a cyst near his brain. It was behind his ear, on that bone and it had ate through some of it. On the other side is the brain. So I can kinda relate. They removed it and he was fine but I was so scared.

I truly hope all goes well with the further testing and everything is explained away as something else. Having had a child with Cancer, I've been through several scares like this myself and know all too well the stress and anxiety that come along with it. We're going through something similar right now and I honestly feel as though I'm going to snap at any given moment. I will keep your precious daughter in my prayers, as well as you and your family. Please post some news as soon as you know more. Stay strong!

TY for your prayers.

I repped everyone I could...:)

We are just taking this one day at a time for now...

And pray that "god's will be done" no matter the outcome.

I'll keep you updated...but don't expect any real 'revelations' until June.
