A Goodyear police officer and K9 were shot in the West Valley on Monday afternoon by an armed robbery suspect.
Police officials say the officer was shot twice in the chest and thigh, and is expected to survive.
The officer was wearing a vest that likely saved his life, Goodyear Police Spokesperson John Rowan said.
The officer was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix and is in stable condition.
The police K9 was also shot, but is expected to be OK.
Police said the situation began when an armed man stole a tip jar from the car wash.
The man fled into a neighborhood near Interstate 10 and Dysart.
Police set up a perimeter and traced the suspect to a shed.
Rowan says as the officer approached the shed, the suspect began shooting, striking the officer.
Other officers returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene.
