Example of DTV Converter Box Coupon

With the transition to Digital Television just over a year away, the government is now offering vouchers to help those who need DTV converter boxes.

Each household can request up to two of these $40 coupons. The coupons cannot be combined to purchase a single converter box. Households can request coupons while funding remains available through March 31st, 2009.

Download the DTV Coupon Application

There are several different ways you can request coupons:

Apply online at www.dtv2009.gov
Call the 24-hour hotline 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009), TTY 1-877-530-2634
Mail a coupon application to: PO BOX 2000, Portland, OR 97208-2000
Fax a coupon application to 1-877-DTV-4ME2 (1-877-388-4632)
Only people who receive their broadcasts over the air with an antenna on non-digital TVs need to get converter boxes. A converter box will be needed for each non-digital TV that does not have cable or satellite service.

The converter boxes were expected to cost between $50 and $70. So far, EchoStar is the only company to announce a converter box at less than the coupon price (EchoStar Model TR-40). Their box will be available for $39.99. EchoStar says their boxes will be available in limited quantities in March of this year with greater quantities available in June.

Coupons expire 90 days after they are mailed, and only one coupon can be used to purchase each coupon-eligible converter box.

The coupons can only be used on authorized converter boxes purchased from an authorized retailer. As of now, there are around two dozen models available with more being tested.
