Discarded phones help troops communicate
Cell Phones for Soldiers, a not-for-profit program that turns donated cell phones into prepaid calling cards.
The Cell Phones for Soldiers program was started by two teenage siblings in Massachusetts. The cell phones are sent to ReCellular, a company that buys and recycles the old cell phones.
Each phone brings in enough to buy a calling card worth an hour of phone time for soldiers overseas, according to the program's Web site, www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com.
Cell phones can be in any condition. If they can't be refurbished, they'll be disposed of safely according to Environmental Protection Agency regulations.
According to the program Web site company-owned AT&T Wireless stores and Liberty Tax Service, 224 S. Larkin Ave. in Joliet, also collect cell phones for the program.
