I have two teeth that had root canals and temporary fillings in March. These root canals ate up all my insurance til Feb. So, I've put off gettin the crowns, as it would cost me 1500 out of my pocket. One of the teeth started getting a little sore, so I finished up some antibiotic I had at home, then it felt ok for a bit. Next thing I know, it's tender again so I get some antibiotic from my MD and finish it out and the tooth felt ok for about a week. Welp, I decide I've got to get these teeth done, so I call the dentist and cant get in until 1/3 for the crowns, but he did see me yesterday and did an xray and sure enough...big abscess under the tooth. I started back on more antibiotics yesteray and BAM! These teeth hurt like a MOFO! I'm taking some Vicodens he gave me too, but if I take a whole one, I'm so dizzy and loopy I can't do anything. If I take a half, it's not enough to kill the pain. They give me a headache and a tummyache (even with food). So, I've got a headache, tummyache and a toothache all at once.
Dh's family is coming here today for Christmas dinner and I feel like crap! whaahh!!!
Luckily, we switched dental insurace last month, so my new insurance starts 1/1! Still gonna cost me several hundred, but better than a couple thousand. DAMN teeth! I really wish I had just gotten them all out and got dentures. I've got so much $$ in my mouth and my teeth and partial still are lousy!
sorry....done now........

Thanks guys. I slept off and on all nite....about every 1/2 hour I was . I keep taking 1/2 pill at a time. Finally slept about 2 hours when baby woke up. I know this sounds gross, but after laying down, I have the "metal" taste in my mouth. I think maybe the abscess is draining? BARF! Better out than in I suppose. I think that's why I feel nauseated too. But I can't chew to put anything in my tummy. Pudding and soggy Fruity Pebbles is what I've been living on. lol!

I FEEL FOR YA as well! I am constantely paranoid that I'll lose my teeth. I also cannot take Vicodin, I get sicker than a dog when I take them even with food. I cannot understand why most dentists prefer to prescribe Vicodin when 90% of the people who take it have to eat before they can take it & if your teeth hurt, how the hells are you supposed to eat? ITS FOOLISH :)

Don't put it off, those things can get really nasty. I had a root canel on a back upper tooth years ago. I got an infection there this fall and tried to ignore it, then got antibiotics from my doctor. It cleared up some but came back. I got two more drugs from my dentist, one for the tooth and one to protect my heart from the infection. Now it's still not gone and has settled into my jawbone. Luckily there's not too much pain but I'm facing appointments in another state with specialists, probably surgery on my upper jaw and who knows what else. I'll NEVER ignore anything tooth related again.

Sorry you're in so much pain. The dentist said I needed root canals but my insurance doesn't cover them and I can't afford to pay for it myself so he said the only other option is to pull them and get a partial. I was supposed to start getting the bad ones pulled in November but I'm waiting until after the holidays. I hope you're feeling better.

I maxed out on my dental benefits this year too due to crown, root canal, extactions adn lots of fillings. I still needed work done, so I applied for CAreCredit at carecredit.com, ny dentist takes it and it has saved me from a lot of pain and infections using it I still have to pay full price, but only a little at a time and I got a special no interest for so many months and it truly has helped my budget a lot !
I do hope you start feeling better, try a hot pack on your jaw it works better at drawing out the infection than ice does.

I had a question for ya...you didnt actually feel the tooth hurting right? It was just where the infection was in your gum I hope...I had a root canal done on a tooth a few years ago, and the dentist said it didnt need a crown...the tooth started to hurt, and eventually got so frail it broke part of it off...I went to a new dentist, and he said the previous dentist did not remove all of the root, and should have done a crown on it...so now...I have a little bit of tooth that he has managed to save, and a rod in my bone to hold my temp crown on until I can get my permanent one put in, I have 1 more root canal to do, 3 crowns 1 to be put in, 1 to be fitted for, and the other I am waiting to do a root canal on so I can get the crown...not to mention I still have to have 2 back teeth removed still...I just went to the dentist Thursday and had to have 2 back teeth filled with the silver filling at the gumline...In the last year...I have had 1 root canal, 3 teeth cut out (1 wisdom), and 8 teeth filled one way or another...I am almost free of all the dental work...but I have to say...My mouth feels so much better...I have no more pain in my teeth...Thank god! My dentist is AWSOME...I used to hate to go to the dentist, but he is one of few that actually cares about your health, and I never feel any pain when he is working...only sometimes afterwords!
Anyways...I hope that you get your tooth fixed soon...I know your pain, before all of this work I had done...I couldnt hardly eat my teeth hurt so bad...esp when I was preg. and I could only take tylenol! Just hang in there...and I think the best pain reliever for teeth is ALEVE! Try it, you might get rid of at least some of the pain, and rinse your mouth out with peroxide and water, or salt and water...it helps too!
Hope you feel beter!

I have care credit too, just about pd off the 650 I owed from the 2 root canals. My insurance only pays 1/2 of root canals/crowns, etc and I had to pay for 650 worth of it. joy.

I hear you on the tooth issues!! Oh , and I would rather give Birth twice in one day than deal with the debilitating pain of an abcessed tooth!!! OWWWW!!
I cannot Even Believe how bad that hurts !! I was in hysterical tears calling my dentist late at night in agony!
I however think Vicodan is a wonder drug!!:D I looooove that stuff - I was taking 2 every 4 hours.
I had lots of energy and No pain! If only I could've gotten more than the two week prescription;) lol
Anyway - We don't have dental insurance insurance at all - so between the 6 of us we shell out about 3,000 a yr. in dental health -
I have to have a Crown put in in 1/08 too.
That's going to cost 1200.00
Ridiculous...

I'm taking the vicoden 5/500 every 2 hours instead of every 6, like the bottle says. Taking an extra antibiotic a day and eating Motrin too. Hot compresses and salt water rinses. I do this and get about an hour of relief. If my top and bottom jaw clink together just barely, the pain is OMG! My dentist is out til the first of the year, so I may see if someone else will yank this sucker out tomorrow. I feel some swelling between my cheek and gum, so I'm hoping the abcess will come to a head and burst (NASTY I KNOW!) but the relief will be a God send!
Hugs to you all for your well wishes. I tell you, I've had more pain from my teeth then anything! And I"ve had 2 csections! No labor/contractions, but 2 csections!

I'd keep rinsing with warm salty water. It helps to take the soreness out. I hope it feels better soon. Be careful with it. my sister had an abcess it started dripping this really bitter tasting stuff from it. She kept getting up all through the night and spitting it out and rinsing her mouth because it tasted so bad. She went to the dentist the next day and he told her that it was a serious infection and that if she had swallowed it she would have got really sick.

Yep it is nasty stuff! ick! If it does not come out, it can get into your blood and cause septis or go to other major organs. It can be life threatening.
It 'ruptured' again. No pain, just when my upper teeth hit my lowers, that hurts like heck!

update:
I got some sleep! The only pain I have is if I bite down or "clack" down my upper teeth onto my lowers. Then a jolt of pain shoots through my head.
SO, I get up, abscess pops again and I try to find a dentist open to look at it.....nada! none! My MIL calls a dentist who goes to our church and tells him how it is swollen and hard (my cheek) and she tells him it is red. He hears that and wants me to go to the hospital to be admitted for iv antibiotics! He calls me and I tell him it is very dry skin that has been irratated yesterday from holding hot packs to my cheek all day. He said ok, no hospital for now, but to never ever put heat to it. It draws the infection into the cheek and an abscess will form on the face! He said he's seen folks with disfiguring scars as big as a fifty cent piece from doing this. He says COLD to the outside of the face, warm/hot liquids INSIDE the mouth (via liquids/teas/soups,etc) to draw the infection to the gum...not the cheek! YIKES! So, I'm praying I don't have a flippin face abscess next! ugh! He calls me in an additional antibiotic (Keflex, as I'm allergic to penecillin) to take w/ the one I'm already on and more Vicoden and RX Motrin. I have to admit I do feel 1000 xs better, except for biting or chewing...so it's soups and milkshakes for me!
And Callsheb just sent me a box of homemade fudges, chocolate covered cherries, pretzels and peanut clusters. And homemade PB cups and no bake cookies! WAHAHAHAH!!! I mushed up a piece of the chocolate and pb fudge without chewing it. YUM!
Thanks for the prayers and replies everyone! This board is the best!

not sure, he's out all this week....as most dentists are. I'm tryin to get into one, as I'm having sharp pains and shooting pains on that side of my head, from the swollen gland to the top of my scalp. My scalp feels like pins and needles, very sensitive. Soreness is back in the tooth (not nearly as bad) and gums are swelling now, on the outside (Side against me cheek...problem the other day was on the tongue side of my tooth). Going to call right now to seee if the dentist who had me on the 'cancellation" list had any.
grrrrr! I'm taking 4 Keflex and 3 Clindymiacin a day, 800 Motrin 3x a day and Vicoden 5/500 every 4 PRN. (don't need those anymore...yet) Still have slight swelling and hardness on the cheek (think it is getting better actually)

How long has the tooth been like this. If you let it go for long time (like months) then you're going to start having bone loss around the tooth. If you can get in for an emergancy visit they could do an I&D until you decide what to do and what can be done. Keep us posted.

latest update...
Got into a dentist yesterday. He says the abscess is there still, just not filling up any longer. He says the infection is a resistant bacteria and is still present. The tooth has to come out...no saving it now. I had an appt on 1/3 to crown this tooth and the one behind it, which he thinks can still be saved. So, tooth 18 has to come out, 19 might be savable. He says I can keep my Jan 3 appt (so I can do oral sedation) and have it extracted then and also impressions for the other tooth's crown. I got a new antibiotic, Flagyl and d/c'ed the Clindamyacin (thank goodness, felt like battery acid in my stomach!). Salt water (hot) rinses *(barf!)* and cold compresses to the cheek for swelling. 15 mins on...30 off....repeat.
Now I am getting a cold sore or fever blister from the constant opening of my mouth....right on the corner! ouch! The tooth is still tender and sensitive to chew on. But I have no back teeth on the bottom on the other side (same type of situation a few yrs ago), so chewing is a problem all over for me! Why the heck aren't I skinny then??????

Sounds like my amount of dental problems. I'm also missing some back teeth, although I had implants on one side. I also can't take penicillin and have to take Clindamycin and that other stuff. So I can sympathize. Hopefully it'll be taken care of next week.

I'd imagine....they usually are, or at least charge me for surgical rather than the easier ones. My new insurance has a 3000 limit vs 1200 I had up til now, so that will be helpful.
I'm trying to do the warm saltwater gargle/swishes....but dang, that is sooooo nasty! ralph! I need to brush that tooth but when I try to, even extra soft, it feels like I'm using sandpaper on it.
It is hard getting 8 antibiotics down a day! Esp. since I try to have something in my tummy when I take them.
A ??......Is there a gland on the underside of your chin, right in the center? Tip your head up and about 2 inches down from the chin bone, there feels like a swollen knot that is tender. Feels like a swollen gland.

Well there is a sublingaul salvitory gland that runs about where you describe. Usually the swelling can be seen underneither the tongue. Calcium deposits form and make stones that need to be removed. I've done three cases before pretty delicate work to remove the stones but still fun.

get thee some acidophilus to replenish the good bacteria while you are on the antibiotic. Get a good one, like 10 billion active cells and take it an hour or so after you take the antibiotic. It will help prevent yeast infections, diarrhea and all sorts of miserable side effects caused by antibiotics. Do not buy it at the grocery store unless your store carries renew life, and make sure its refrigerated if its not made by renew life, room temp kills the active bacteria.
