Our 12 yr old daughter bent her ankle getting off the school bus Friday afternoon. We took her to the hospital & She broke her ankle in 2 places in the Fibula & tibia. She has a half cast on now. There's a crack going into the growth plate so, she has to go see an orthopedic surgeon on Monday to see if surgery is needed or just a full cast. The Er doctor said he doesn't think surgery is needed but, that the orthopedic Dr would know more.

She cannot put any weight on it at all or else it could mess it up worse than what it is.

The school bus driver lets them off across the road from our road where other kids get off. She doesn't stop where they can get off on the pavement & the kids have to step down on to the shoulder of the road where the dirt/gravel is. I think our daughter stepped down off the bus & kinda slid on the gravel & her ankle bent sideways.

The school will be getting a call to let them know what happened. The bus driver just yelled out the window & asked if she is ok. I told her I don't know & she drove off.:getyou

My poor baby was in so much pain but she is ok now. She has pain meds but hasn't needed any since last night.

She was so brave at the hospital & the nurses & Dr's at the hospital were great.

I hope she doesn't need surgery & just needs a cast. I feel so bad because she will be in a cast through her Birthday & Christmas probably.

The best I think you can hope for is the bus stops some place safer. I broke my foot on a trampoline in highschool. The top half of my foot bent under the bottom half. broke all the metatarsels or whatever. The school nurse did not call my Mom and said I had to return the crutches before I went home. That means I had to hop down the stairs from the 2nd floor and out the building and about 300 feet to the bus. The bus driver stopped in front of my house where I hopped to the stairs and crawled. My older brother ran ahead of me and my Mom met me at the top of the stairs where we went to the ER. I was told not to walk on it but I did. The school sided with the nurse and said I misunderstood about the crutches even though the gym teacher verified it.
Thank goodness you were there. I hope no surgery is needed an that she will be fine.

Poor thing! (Daughter, and Mommy too!) Maybe this can be sort of a mother-daughter bonding period? Hang in there, and keep us posted!

Thank you everyone!

She has a high tolerence for pain-that's what the nurse told her because she wasn't crying by the time she was seen by the nurse & Dr. She moved around pretty well when she had to get the x-rays & catscan. She was very brave & grown up. She's not my baby anymore......:cry But I was so proud of her.

She loves watching TV in the basement & goes down the stairs on her butt while holding her broken ankle up. She's already a pro on the crutches.

take her to another ER right away this is why(ive been through this)
umm not to correct you but the tibia and fibula is in the leg not the ankle I know this because I slipped and fell in the mud in 2003 and broke both of these(they support the ankle though) the tibia is the front bone(shin bone)and the fibula(calf bone) is the bone behind your leg and your knee. I picked up my leg and my foot did a 360 degree turn. I had to get a rod and pins in my leg because it was broken so bad and they never put a cast on me because of the rod and pins they told me a regular cast wouldnt heal it properly. I had an orthopedic surgeon look at it and he did my surgery who told you it was her ankle that was broken? my rod goes from my knee to my ankle and I have 4 or 5 pins in it so most likely she will need surgery I had to basically learn to walk all over again. I had to use a wheelchair for when I went shopping and they gave me a walker to learn how to walk again because crutches they said arent sturdy enough to support your weight.I also had to take calcium pills for ahwile as well as like a bayer aspirin to make sure i didnt get blood clots.if her leg is anything like mine she will need surgery I fell with all my weight on my leg(it ended up bent under me) I heard it snap like a twig. The ER doctor should have sent or had an orthopedic surgeon look at it right away since complications can follow if not treated correctly right away.No Im not a dr but I went through this and remember all that they told me.if she has to have surgery like i did it shouldnt take her long to be able to put weight on it but it will be slow and might take a few months before she is walking again normally if at all. I dont have any kind of limp I just cant run right and I have pains in my leg still to this day. they told me if I were to have put weight on my leg Id have shoved the shin bone right through my leg(it was broke diagonally) so please dont let her put weight on it she shouldnt even be able to move it.(they made sure my whole leg was immobilized before my surgery they wouldnt even let me go to the bathroom normally they made me use a bed pan. hope all goes well but if not you can blame the ER drs for not getting her seen by a specialist right away

Oh your poor daughter. I broke my ankle earlier this year so I can really feel for her. I imagine they took x-rays at the hospital? I know that sometimes surgery is needed and sometimes it isn't. I had to have it. Maybe she'll be okay without it. Hopefully, she heals quickly. Kids usually heal quicker and get around better than adults when they have broken bones.

I am sorry this happened to her. I had a chipped bone in my ankle as a child and to this day it has always given me problems.

I hope you are not blaming the bus. This could have happened anywhere. The drivers are on a schedule. As long as a parent is with the child, I don't see why the driver should not have left. At least they asked if she was ok and did not just drive off. Sometimes a fall like that is difficult to tell how bad it is until you get to a hospital/er and have an x ray.

I think you are correct in letting the school know, but I don't see this as the school or bus' responsibility here. Just because it happens to one person does not mean that the entire system needs to be changed.

Hope she feels better soon.

This is what the Er dr told us & what it says on her discharge papers that it is those bones. He showed us on the xray & you could she the bones where they broke/fractured. This is a very good hospital & the orthopedic surgeon was not available until tomorrow. My daughter has been off her feet all weekend sitting on the couch or in bed with her ankle elevated with ice on it 3 times a day.

She hasn't put any weight on it at all & has a half cast on it right now.

I hope they don't have to re break the bones.

That's what happen with my son. They only put it in a cast at the E.R. then I had to take him to the bone doctor a week later. They had to re break his hand. They didn't even put him under to do it either. I felt so sorry for him.

Wishing your daughter a speedy recovery.

well I hope those drs know what they are doing i just know what happened with my leg I broke both those bones(in the shin area) and it broke diagonally right in half and it broke the other bone. the paramedics Immobilized my leg in a splint, bandage and an air splint. they had to transport me to another hospital after taking me to my local one because they dont have ortho. surgeons in my area. the hospital they transported me to would not even let me hop on one leg to the bathroom they told me I couldnt move my leg at all.which in the splint it wouldnt move anyway but they told me if not fixed within 24 hrs infection could set in. did she break it or fracture it? if she fractured it then that is a big difference mine was a clear break so thats why they had to put a rod and pins in my leg and I had to go to my ortho. surgeon every week or two for like 4-6 months for xrays and stuff to see how it was healing. It took me months before I could put my foot flat on the ground and put all my weight on it. Im glad I had a good surgeon because you wouldnt even know I broke those two bones I have no limp or anything. but being her ankle I dont know how they will do with that.whos property did she fall on?I just hope she gets it fixed soon and doesnt have to have surgery because that really sucks. but good luck and I hope she doesnt have any problems with it or anything

She fell on the side of road while getting off the school bus. The discharge papers says a break/fracture.

SS about your DD and BTW the area she is in has some of the best ortho Docs around. I know when my D broke her wrist they wanted to wait anyway over the weekend because they like to wait for some of the swelling to go down. They might have to put pins in it good luck on Monday. With winter coming it is going to suck.

Thank you! Yes they didn't want to do a full cast until the swelling goes down otherwise the swelling would go down & the cast would be too big.

The school bus driver lets them off across the road from our road where other kids get off. Let's use some common sense and move to where it is safe and level. The driver could move the stop across the street. I think asking the school and bus company to do this may prevent it from happening again.

When I broke my foot in school the driver let me off at my house, which is a corner house. 1 block east of the regular stop. (1 block equals 2 houses). On the north corner instead of the south. No one complained. I could not have possibly hopped home as I was exhausted from hopping from the school to the bus.

I am not saying the driver is at fault but this could have been prevented.

If the bus driver just pulled up another foot the kids can get off in the driveway of the house across from our road instead of the side of the road.

We don't have a problem with them getting off across the street because we are always there to get them. We just think it's dangerous to let them off on the shoulder where it dips down & has little pebbles & dirt where kids can slip.

We went to the orthopedic surgeon today & she doesn't need surgery & will be in a cast for 4-6 weeks. After the first 2 weeks she will be able to have a walking cast.

Glad to hear she doesn't need surgery. And by the way a fracture is a break - it would be either a union or non-union - non-union is the type where it is broken in 2 or more pieces (more pieces is aka compound fracture) - union means it is still "attached". I got a lesson in Ortho after a car accident and I thought a fracture was just a crack not a break.

Glad to see she doesn't need surgery...would be more pain for her, and itching inside the cast from the healing process of the incision. On a lighter note...I bet she was excited to pick her cast color....lol. My daughter has broken bones a couple of times and loved having a colorful cast on...lol.

We didn't report her but went into the office on Tuesday when DD went back to school & they asked what happened. We said she fell getting off the school bus. They asked who she had for a bus driver & we only know that she has long blond hair & told them that. But some people at the school had already heard about it so the news is getting around.

I just don't know what to do about the situation.

That was just jacked up laziness on her part

The bus driver did what she was suppose to do. Pepsi was there so it wasn't like she was just leaving her dd there to suffer. had Pepsi not been there, I'm sure the driver would have called the bus barn and then they would have contacted Pepsi. That driver has a schedule to follow and she cannot just wait around to find out if her dd is all right when her mother was there. I'm sure there were lots of other parents waiting for their children. Had the driver known that Pepsi's dd had broken a bone she also would have done an accident report, but since she didn't know, it's kind of hard for her to fill out.

the bus driver also cannot just change the route on her own free will, it needs to go through the bus barn and be approved. If it gets back to them that the driver is not stopping at the right stops she can get in big trouble and possibly lose her job. Pepsi, since you talked to them, I'm sure you stated your concerns and they can go out to that stop and make the call to move it up a foot or so. I honestly don't see the harm in them just moving the stop up a foot. (honestly, I'm shocked they would have her stop in an unsafe spot...) GL to you on that.

Glad your dd does not need surgery. Hope she heals soon. :hug
