Ok so I am one of the few people that doesn't still have some version of an ipod. I just don't listed to the radio a lot, won't use it when I am in the house prob. or I would loose my youngest and in the care we have satalite radio and will eventually get the other one hooked up in the house.
That said I am still considering getting one for Christmas. I do like technical gadgets, used to have a palm pilot until my purse was stolen... so give me some ideas or suggestion on some good ones. There are so many different kinds.

I have an MP3 player. They are a lot cheaper.
With an ipod dont you have to but the itune cards to get music/have to pay for the music.
With my MP3 player I download free from Limewire or just put my cd's on the computer then add them to my MP3 player.

No, you don't have to buy them if you don't want to. At least I don't. I use it just like you would a mp3 player. You can transfer any of your mp3 onto it. Whole CD's on to it. Mine is a video ipod and I can transfer my dvd's onto the ipod. They come with a large hard drive in them, and will hold a ton of movie's, tv shows, music video's, audio books, personal photo's, and music.
My son got the one I have in a trade, and I took it over. I just love it. I listen to the audio books when I'm driving. And I watch movies and stuff on it when I'm like in the waiting room at the doctors office. There pretty cool. :)

Yep, I got one for my birthday about two weeks ago and mine also does video (the new video nano) and I don't pay for any music at all. You can download them to your computer from other free peer to peer sites and upload them to your ipod using the itunes software.
I have a few videos on mine that my friend made for me. I'd love to put a dvd or two on mine. I'm still learning though. lol
I love my ipod! I use it all the time around the house while I'm cleaning or just doing things on the computer. I also take it grocery shopping too. ;)

thanks guys. I didn't think about work on my breaks when I am bored. Guess I have some time to research (any suggestion on good places to compare them?) and w/ Christmas coming I am sure there will be some good deals coming out also.

My hubby has an iPod, and a friend showed him how to put his CD collection on it. DH doesn't shop iTunes, but buys a lot of CDs on Amazon. It's amazing how much music those things can hold!
I didn't have an iPod of any kind until I won a Shuffle on one of the instant win games (posted here at BigBig). I'm planning to use my new Shuffle for podcasts and audio books. I like music, but don't plan to wear my itty-bitty Shuffle as an accessory...can't really listen to it at work, won't wear it while driving, so will probably be used on the treadmill or when travelling on a plane. At least, that's the plan for now.

I highly recommend the Nano. I have it and I love it (lots of space for plenty of music, too). If you buy it from Best Buy, get the warranty (although I hear if you get it from Apple, you can exchange it at anytime no cost). The reason is because the chargeable battery wears down easily(less than one year) and it costs almost as much to replace the batter as it does to replace the item itself. So at Apple or with a warranty, you will save yourself a lot of money. That said, I just keep recharging mine on my computer and it works just fine (same one for over 2 years). My husband has a Ipod Shuffle, and we've had to replace it I believe 3 times.

You can (cheaply) get an extension put into your car where you can plug in your ipod.

How do you get audio books on it? I used to get books on CD when we would travel from MO to VA for trips and enjoyed that.

The ones I've put on it so far, I did it through the free itunes program that you download. It pulled them out of my Audible program. :)

Let's assume I get an i-pod video nano, tell me, other than loading stuff I own (like my own cd's which is not a lot) do I have to pay for every thing else? or are there places to do it for free, legally...

Honestly, it doesn't matter what device you use to download songs on. With any type of player, be it a cell phone, ipod, mp3 player, or any other device that holds digital downloads it will cost you money if you want to download them legally.
Their are probably some songs you can download for free legally, but it wouldn't be songs that you know or recognize more than likely it would be songs by artist you never heard of. Also public domain songs are free such as Happy Birthday song. :)
There might be some online clubs that you pay a certain amount and get to download more for you money. I'm not sure though. I'm more into watching movies and listening to books I've bought off of Audible on mine. Maybe some of the others can help you out more with that music stuff than I can. :)

These are a really good deal, I got my DD one a month or so ago. It holds 2 gigs, so you put a lot of music and ebooks on it.

Hey I have one of those creative Zen things. My son got it in the same trade that he got the ipod in. If you are interested in it, I will sell it to you at a fair price. I'm not even sure what size it is or anything. I've not ever messed with it yet. There is no box for it, but the software and such is there. Of course I would want to check it all out and make sure it worked and stuff before hand. But if you interested in it let me know. :)

I have one of them too, but mine doesn't have a screen. It's a gig & was only about 35.00. Mine is tough, I've dropped down the stairs etc, still works great.

Bubbles, my wife got the 80gb video ipod this year. I made her as a reward for all her hard work in college.
It seems like alot of money at first, but once you get one you practically cant live without it.
If you wantto carry mvoies and music and pics or whatever you definitely want to get as much space as you can afford.
My wife and I BOTH have all our favorite stuff on hers and it still has a lot of room!!
One great idea, is to go to the public library!! you can rent ALL kinds of cd's and rip/import them into itunes!!!
You get the music and you can burn a copy and you dont have to buy the CD!!! PLUS if you want a CD that they dont have, at MOST libraries you can put in a request and they will order it and you will be the first person to rent it!!
Plus if you are a sound snob like me!! (I am a musician so sound and tone is VERY important to me)
The newer iPod's are one of only a handfull of players that support lossless audio (you can compress the music file WITHOUT losing any of the original recordings depth and clarity) This is another reason to get a larger HD player. If you want CD quality music it DOES take up more room.
